Where's the Fantasy Gone?

It seems as of late that Heroes has become such a cold, clinical game. Everything seems to have been worked out to an exact formula and I find it sad that the heroes are not even referred to by name. They're either MAIN or SCOUT as far as players are concerned. People seem not too focused on the idea of grand conquest and players are in a rush to get it 'over and done with' . You know, what draws me to this game is the fantasy, and the strategy and if this game was called Astronauts of Sabers and Rockets, I wouldn't play it...

Edit: revived!@

What else do you expect from a game that has no meaning besides beating your enemies into a bleeding pulp?

See what I mean?

You just summed it all up! What else do I expect from a game that has no meaning?! Damn if it were just as simple as beating the other player into a pulp, I'd play Streetfighter. It amazes me that you can't see any further depth in the game. As a matter of fact, it's rather sad.

i agree. you got two choices: take it easy or havoc. In the first choice you can build and grow until you are, well lets just say huge. And now thats a sight (1000 azure dragons, 10000 skeleton warriors etc.Plus the fact that you know you can take out anyone, but you dont want to) itself. Or you can b´play it, as shae trelle said, like streetfighter. Woosh wham bam look at my 500 wolfriders woosh wham bam two weeks bang bang enemy destroyed.

Too True Shae

I'd like to see more creativity using the other end game options in maps like transport artie, capture town, defeat hero etc.
I'm sure people might not like them at first but it could catch on. If some good mapmaking skills and innovative ideas were used in their creation these types of maps could be a nice change.

Well of course if you add tournaments and online gaming people are going to play a bit more agressive and play to win.I think the game only stays fun if u know the people u are playing against and with, if u dont everyone will be more likely to try and attack fast and make sure that they dont lose.

Thats why i dont play it on the net it does not seem to be the right game for this attitude.

I dunno... I'm more of the "take it easy" type of player... I like developing and exploring, and I prefer the XL maps to the small maps for this purpose.  I, too, think that a lot of the fantasy and storytelling has disappeared in a lot of the maps that I have played, both online and single player.  The question is, though, what can be done to bring the fantasy back to the game.  Is it wholly the mapmaker's job to bring it, or do the players have a hand in bringing the fantasy into the game?

I once played a map which had been developed by a player over an 18 month period, an XL masterpiece which quite honestly blew me away. It was modelled on the Middle Earth scape and was done with such incredible precision that the map had become an epic in itself. It was so awesome and so intensely detailed that it was rather overwhelming and my 'freedom of choice' felt rather limited. I knew that I was looking at a map which was on the opposite end of a typical 'kill the enemy' kind of thing that I commonly find in TOH. I also knew that there was a middle ground somewhere, a place where map-makers could FULLY utilise every feature of the map editor to create a map that not only had a description, but had some sort of story behind it. Events could be placed upon maps to give reason to certain things, simple events that would give the map a much better feel of coherency. How much of a story do you find in Hourglass? I bet you read it in three lines or less...

Indeed, where has the fantasy gone... i don't think that it was felt ever since the tournaments have taken hold of this game. It is all a matter of point conquest, of rank achievement and if possible a medal here or there. This has ceased to be a fantasy TBS, and has turned into a simple TBS. Hopefully Heroes 4 will try to revive the spirit of the game.

I played that one its great! But theres plenty of just as good if not better maps out there. For multiplayer i think the maps should be kept simple there the easiest to play and quickest and thats what most people want in multiplayer competition. Fast, frenzied and fair is what makes a good multiplayer game. Theres plenty of varied interesting games for single player and even some for multiplaying but for tournament type games most would rather get down to the battling. This is fine by me but i do like a bit more interest to my games however some go the opposite way and totally flood you with information everytime your character moves.

LOL Arachnid, you sure as hell do have 8 legs don't you!

I guess that people do just want to kill each other, they really don't need a reason to fight when playing heroes, other than the 'I'm better than you' cliche. I wonder if it takes any more reason to start a world war?

I agree with everything said here and all I can really suggest is playing my maps.  They are designed for the very reasons discussed in this thread.  This sounds egotistical I realize, but I agree with you and the lack of quality storyline, balanced, creative, and playable maps is my primary motive to painstakingly designing my collection.

Of course these maps cannot be found anywhere to download, and only I have them.  Sorry, but it is necessary for the tournament I run and even the players involved have seen only 1 or 2 so far.  And I understand if people don't believe me.  No big deal, just don't like to hear that no one makes any good maps of this variety.

Pluvious

Nothing against you or your Tymeria tournament, but Pluvious, you would make a great car salesman did you know that?

It's a real pity that your maps are designed only for the use of your tournament, because I feel that you are one of the very few people who is switched on to the complete Heroes experience. You know, your tournament would probably have a bit more success if you decided to try out a few maps for TOH. Give people a taste of what Tymeria is all about, yun?

Shae theres no need to get so dramatic!!! I think theres a huge difference between what starts world wars causing millions of deaths compared to a computer game called heroes!!!

Oh, and Shae...the basis of this thread is correct and many people don't like to play a map they can't win quickly or could care less if it is challenging.  And many people just really want to memorize maps so they can have an advantage against their opponents.

I can't do anything about that...but I won't exploit it for numbers.

Sorry

Yes, sorry Pluvious, my remark was unwarranted and I apologise. Your Tymeria tournament had my interest piqued from the moment you mentioned it, and I guess I'm a little ticked off that I don't really have the time or the flexibility to play it

Arachnid, lol, yes, I was getting out of hand. I was annoyed at your remark that it didn't take much to kill other people on heroes. "Oh, there's no reason to it at all Jimmy, I just like killing people in this game".

It wasn't a quote

Hey, arachnid, I wasn't quoting you, I was using an example of my own (sometimes twisted mind) to illustrate something.

You said that people in tournaments like "fast frenzied and fair" and that they'd rather get "down to the battling".

Now you can quote me on those quotes that I quoted from your quotes of yourself which I misquoted, lol!

I took your words to mean that people like it quick (lol!) and they like to get down to battle. This sounds like they're in a hurry to kill the other player, maybe I'm wrong.

Are people in a hurry to kill? And how much more time does it take to make the kill interesting? Does it take a long time to have to kill someone with purpose?

Just so we don't have our wires crossed, I agree with you, arachnid. *smile*. I'm not disputing your views. I'm disputing the views of those 'quick and frenzied players' who feel that there's no need for more depth in plot and gameplay and just want to hurry up and kill the other player...

OK, now that I've got a knife in my hand from the word KILL, I think I'll go back to the kitchen and continue cooking my dinner, LOL.

I'm sad to hear all these, because i myself prefer the
fantasy to the fast hack&slash.
I think that the mapmaker is the one who can make the difference between a good story and a 'cut'im up' style of map.
Online the players seem to care more about the number
(and the quality) of defeted opponents not about story.
I like a good story that keeps you in front of the monitor
for days 'till you finally get to the bottom of it.
But I also like to beat up my friends in multiplayer game.

What do you think about Heroes Chronicles?
Are there some good stories involved in those Chronicles?
