I'll try to help when later on.
Right now, however, I do have one idea about these 3 factors.

Magic: you said there will be generals, these generals could use magic. The more you walk down the path of magic, the more spells your generals have. The spell option could be found on the adventure map when you select a general.
Spells examples: haste - your army can move faster (air), fire arrows - your soldiers have more chances to succeed at the upcoming siege (fire) etc.

Nature (or tactics): Raises your troops parameters (att/def/both) according to your tactics (offensive/deffensive/balanced).

Worship: not sure, but maybe gives you a special passive ability. For example: worship Life - part of your defeated troops are ressurected after battle.

i think i might have a story line for you

(rummages around in various draws, shelves and such like)

here it is!

the story is basically, it starts of with the war of the weasels (Itachi) and the raccoons (Tanuki) over the Tanuki land, which the Itachi want to take, being big bad conquerers. so there is a war going on there.

meanwhile, the foxes (kitsune) are plotting away (evil schemer to a fox) they see the war between the tanuki and the itachi as a perfect way of making money and to take the trade routes from the otters (Raniju) who developed a cheaper, nicer way of trading to the foxes. to do this, however, they needed to get rid of the obvious allies to the tanuki, the   badgers (Mujina).

to do this, they sent weapons to the Mujina enemies, the wildcats (Nekoma), along with battle plans to take over one of the Mujinas fabled mountian fortresses. the Nekoma want to take over the Mujina because they are simply looking for a fight with an equal rival. so, they take over the fortress. the mujina king, Kakumaru, sends troops in to take back settlements which have been destroyed by the nekoma and can't send troops to help the Tanuki.

the Tanuki, pleading for help, send word to the Raniju. being kind souls, the Raniju were happy to help their friends. just the thing the kitsune had been waiting for!. they began to launch raids on the raniju settlements, slowing gaining the waterways.

a big war is going on, reinforcements from other armies are flying about from place to place, fighting, and so one

fun, fun, fun, fun, FUN!

Ignore the stuff I said about generals for the moment.

Perfect, this should definitely be implemented.

Again, a good idea.

i tried the updated link, but it does not work with firefox(im using firefox 2.0.0.3 and windows2000, and while im too lazy to check my PC stats, its below average, eg GTA3:LibertyCity didnt run correctly on mine). i tried it with IE and it worked imo better now than before; but, it still has that if you hold down a key for a long time, the game starts lagging very hard.

---

btw i dont think anime & japanese names is the way to go. anime + fantasy makes a bad combo. instead, i suggest something along:

*forest&swampfaction* - worship and are aided by fairies and the like, but they are, like, semi-evil, and dont hesitate to torture and kill for cutting their holy trees. sacrifice people to the fairies.

*occultgoatfaction* - baphomet-inspired goat-headed people. use the traditional occult spells, that is, demon summoning and curses. specialize eg in area-of-effect spells? (like, summon some demon in warcraft3 way onto enemies, dealing also damage)

*koboldfaction* - "goblin" is so overused and since tolkien it has come to mean a "small orc", so kobold is a much better word. the KEKEKE ZERGLING RUSH faction.

*Mediterraneanfaction* - think "300", that is, phalanxes and greek mythology. i noticed there wasnt any "good" faction so i thought of this one.

etc.

I want to make a game too!   But I cann't even code "Hello World" to save my life... oh well...

anyhow, some Questions (and minor suggestions) to start...

-Won't it be lot easier to start as a Single Player game first?  But I guess than you would have to deal with AI..  Seem like the easiest would be to make a same-computer 2 player game (for testing as well) before going to the multi-player part....

-Still not too sure about what a Player would do in a turn.  Right now, from the sound of it, sound like the early Civilization with fantasy race (in exploration and expansion), right?

-Hows the battle going to be?  Will they take place on the world map, or jump into a sub-battle map upon encounter?

-Any element of story? (like RPG, if it have single player campagin), or be a board-game like game for now?

-Can you code any of the entry in Board game contest into computer game?

If you do, please wait until the contest is over, so there can be no bias.

Also, here's some fun faction stuff:
Foxes
Magic: Fire
Nature: Attack
Worship: Chaos

The fox's environment is a rough land, filled with thickets, briars, and no flowers.  Their dwellings are logical, with very little uneeded beauty for the suburbs.  The ruling buildings, on the other hand, are built in a very convoluted fashion, with stairs that go nowhere, great antechambers and secret passages.

The fox society is devided into two groups: the cans, and the cannots.  The cans are the ones who can further the strength of the Fox Kingdom, either by external or internal subterfuge.  The cannots are unable to do more than obey the orders of their superiors, and are thus simple servants.

Weasels
Magic: Earth
Nature: Attack
Worship: Chaos

The Weasels live in an environment primarily filled with dirt.  Their buildings, in contrast to the Foxes, are built with extensive beauty, with a very circular feel.  Most buildings have at least four doors, all round.  Their cities are sprawling, as they have very little taste for higher altitudes.  The tallest tower in a weasel city is only three floors.

Weasels have a society built around paperwork.  This is not because they like organization, but those in power can give paperwork to people, which can keep them from doing untoward things.  The beuracracy and red tape has extended so far through the weasel society that it is possible to sign away your soul, if the contract is lucrative enough.

Raccoons
Magic: Earth
Nature: Balance
Worship: Chaotic Organization

Racoons live in close nit villages, all built into the hills around their home.  Roads run through the hills, and trade flourishes.  The inside of a Racoon's mansion is primarily built up with the junk of ages.  Racoons use this in the barter system their economy thrives on.  Each Racoon knows the exact value of every object he or she owns, and most of its history.  No outsiders know how they compute or remeber it.

The Racoon society is built around the closeness of each home.  Everyone knows everyone else in the community, since the communities are so small.  Roads are well marked and lead almost anywhere.

erm... daystar, the way i see it is that...

each animal represents a different element, and uses it in their magic.
itachi: ice
weasels come from the north, and as a result, don't have much in the way of buildings. instead, they move the ice to create palaces and structures. also, they worship a god of ice, which will eventually "consume the world!" ruthlessness, loyalty to your god and extremism is how you get up the ranks in Itachi society.

tanuki: lightning
the racoons are the inventors, using lightning bolts to gain power. they often have lots of different bits added on to their buildings, making some seem uninhabitable. your own creativity can get you very far in Tanuki society.

Raniju: water
no suprise there. otters are very poor, but very kind, so their buildings look like something that was knocked together recently out of garbage. the society is based off the closeness and friendship.

kitsune: air
trickery, complecation etc. fox buildings are always full of elegence and grandure, as they are incredibly wealthy. ambition, treachery and cunning is what everying revolves around in kitsune society.

Mujina: earth
the badgers are masters at metal work, so will build, rather square, fortresses and buildings. they are very strong and tough. families and family lineages are what is central to Mujina society.

Nekoma: fire
the great destroyer. nekoma love war and destruction, just because they are adrenaline junkies. their buildings are made from stone, bone and wood, resembling carns and caves.  war, destruction and fighting is basically what the nekoma society is.

however, i like the idea for insects and bird units. i was thinking, something along those lines would help.

also, i was thinking of some kind of replite or amphibian to help them.
weseals: frilled lizards- dangerous and competitive
racoons: newts- calm and patient
foxes: snakes- ssssssssssly and sssssssssssneaky
otters: toad- good natured
wildcats: monitors- big, bad and dangerous to know
badgers: tortoises- slow, tough, and gruff.

First of all, the idea sounds great.

The races that should be included in the game, in my opinion:
Elves, Wizards, Demons, Nagas, Nacromancers, Orcs and Humans.
Races that might be included: Werewolves, Centaurs and Gnomes.

Regiments: Offensive, Defensive, Magic, Ranged.
Is that what you meant to?
Elves-Ranged
Wizards-Magic
Nagas-Offensive
Nacromancers-Magic
Orcs-Defensive
Demons-Offensive
Humans-Defensive
Does it sound fine?

im afraid im against your anime ideas. we would need to target a more mature audience, as group-amateur games such as this need help from player contributions(art & code) which, presumably, the occasional anime kid player cant give.

aside from that, i also hate anime in general. not that it would be that relevant.

Thanks for the reply vhilhu - what you say is a bit odd. Mind you, even on my machine you have to wait ages for Firefox to render the map (bearing in mind it's creating more than 1000 individual boxes), so you might want to wait a bit more when it is loading. This is of course assuming the problem you have is that it won't load. If this is not the case, please say! As for IE, it's good that it works better, and if I get other mentions of problems I may try to further optimise the code - I have an idea of what to do, but it would be quite hard so I won't do it unless really necessary!!

Quote:

You'll be happy to know I expect that I am not a particular fan either! So will not overdo the anime-style races (one or two is fine for originality), trying to focus on the less used but still fairly `classical` races, with also some of those `anime` animal races and some possibly that I make up myself.

Quote:

*forest&swampfaction* - worship and are aided by fairies and the like, but they are, like, semi-evil, and dont hesitate to torture and kill for cutting their holy trees. sacrifice people to the fairies.

These are all nice ideas, and have been added to the masterpost.

Thanks for reminding me, my screen is big enough for there not to be a scrollbar. Eventually I may allow you to change the map size.

Quote:

Well it's never too late to learn . My game uses HTML and CSS to lay out the page, Javascript to make the game work, PHP to do the server-side processing and MYSQL for the database, so you could always find some books and tutorials and stuff

Quote:

There's actually quite a big difference between the coding for different game types.
ARGH, AI, I'd forgotten that would be needed , that's going to be a real challenge if I ever make it that far...

Quote:
-Still not too sure about what a Player would do in a turn.  Right now, from the sound of it, sound like the early Civilization with fantasy race (in exploration and expansion), right?

There are no turns, you just move around the map killing things, and leveling up, such that you can better take over other player's towns! I've not played Civilization so I can't draw any likenesses there though.

Quote:
-Hows the battle going to be?  Will they take place on the world map, or jump into a sub-battle map upon encounter?

Sub-map was the plan, however this will be much MUCH harder to code than the map, and also would be more open to hacking (security is going to be a big problem for this game, especially since I have little programming experience in the area).

Quote:
-Any element of story? (like RPG, if it have single player campagin), or be a board-game like game for now?

I'd quite like a story, like Bixie's, but you're right in saying that it's not strictly necessary. But, anything that can help involve players in the game is good.

Quote:
-Can you code any of the entry in Board game contest into computer game?

Quite possibly, although these wouldn't be web-based, I'd make them in Visual Basic.

Quote:

Thanks GL .! As bixie says, I'm trying to avoid the standard races for the moment. I'm not sure I understand what you mean with the regiments thing, could you elaborate? If you are talking about the different `natures` of the factions, this wouldn't make all the regiments of the faction become attack-based, defence-based etc., just generally more so. Hence you couldn't say Elf regiments or whatever would be ranged, but rather that "one of the Elf regiment types, the Ranger, is ranged; another, the Trackers, are melee; if <50% of a Tracker regiment are actually Elves, they have the ability to take two shots" etc., etc..

Well I think that's all...

EDIT: the website is currently down, and I have no idea why. This is, needless to say, not good.

I agree. Although I am not overly fond of too many anime-style names, calling them "Foxes" and "Badgers" is confusing and conveys the wrong image.

You're welcome to come up with anything you want, so long as you don't mind me changing it! Bear in mind that for the moment we'll stick to two or just maybe three animal races, balanced with 4 or so, maybe 5, of the not-so-classical races, and 1 or 2 created by me. 7 - 10 races therefore. Oh, and also remember, each race has:
Various regiments, of differing skill and power ("Paladins", "Rangers", "Priests" and other humanoid titles) - but in the game these are not necessarily     completely filled with the racial humanoid
A selection of creatures of varying power too (but can sometimes buy creatures from other races)

Hope everything is clear, have fun!
