++Saving GAMES++

I don't know how many times I've done this, but I've heard it plenty of times when somebody is beating somebody else and all of a sudden they tell me 'oh, he says he has to go somewhere and wants to save the game....'

How do you suggest to someone that you're kicking their arse and they're going to lose and you think that they're just trying to play it cheap by saving a game and probably never finishing it?

It's not cheating. And damn you'd feel like a tightarse if you wanted to report an unfinished game. So in effect, you've probably been duped into playing someone who has the honour level of a sewer rat.

What happens when two weeks later, you still haven't seen that opponent again? You can't report it, because the game is not in the finishing stages, yet you know you have the upper hand and chances are you're going to win...

How many of you have been in this situation? And what do you do about it?

I hate it. This is why I only play people I know, I havent played someone I dont know in a loooong time. The other day I was playing hg3 against someone, I had Tazar, he had Adela, we all know the outcome of that battle. He said "can we save, I have to go eat" Which sucked. Dont start the game if you cant finish.

i reckon the best way around this problem is to come straight out with it and call these people the lying, cheating, thieving, no-good, honourless... etc...
people that they are..

this may discourage them from doing it again..

then again, maybe not.. what do i know???

Saving game when being ahead... happened to me once or twice only, so I haven't made any deeper thoughts about it. I don't bother about sending in the save and getting the win this way; I just don't play these guys anymore.

Rychenroller's proposal is maybe the best solution, only play people you trust. Not always possible to get a game then, tho.. at least for me.

Logical, but surely not the best solution!

This is one thing that has plagued me about ToH. The idea that only known people play other known people and the little collective circles go round and round. Is ToH a worldwide tournament or just a collection of friends playing each other online?

If you don't play new people, then you run the risk of alienating them from ToH. I've always felt that it's best to try and help them and give them a bit of your time. I remember doing this with a few people last season and I handed on the knowledge that people like Rychee taught me and now they're really good, respected players. Better than me even (that's not too hard to do, by the way, lmao!)

So do we run the risk of playing people we don't know? Sure we do. To do otherwise would be closing yourself off from something that potentially may turn out to be beneficial for you. Otherwise, you're stuck playing the same people over and over and you don't really get anywhere, except to make claim that you're a ToH general because you were able to beat 10 people on one map 1000 times.

I think there needs to be a penalty for those people who initiate saves whilst they're losing a game. Unless they return and continue the game of course. But saving a game that you're going to lose (or have a really hard time of winning) is a cop out. And there are no rules against this sort of thing, no deterrents to stop people from doing it. It's the closest you can get to 'legally' dropping out of a game without being called a cheat and being investigated by the Honour Council.

I'd like to be able to play a new person every so often when it's hard to get a game and be comfortable knowing the penalties if they decide they have to 'go and eat dinner'.

it's always a decision - play someone unknown and risk to waste your time or go the easy way. Depends on how much I really want to play. Since I'm easy to impress (just laugh about my jokes ), I play more unknown people than it probably sounded.

Better solution...

Ask about saving the game before you start it...
Yes I know, I know...
NO Rules, rules!

but I ask my opponent when we start the game is it OK to save the game if I have to leave before it ends.
Then I ask what is good time to stop it. Like not before important fight that both know is coming...and stuff like that.

If other one doesn't agree to this I don't play or I stay playing until it is over.

But if other player leaves before game ends...especially in he/she is losing...in tournament play one could say that some thoughts come to the mind about cheating and all..

Hmmm, Ive been in a situation a couple of times where I had to run off in the middle of a game. Sometimes even when I played one Ive never played before.
In these situations I always find it most honorable to ask if they want the win, or if we could save.
In cases where they opt for the save, I always make a huge deal out of finding a new time where we can finish the game, especially if I asked for the save. That way they know Im serious about wanting to finish the game.
If its the other way around I usually only takes a win, if offered if Im completely sure that I was gonna win the game. That is very rare
I have had times in my life where it was impossible for me to get a game played. The only thing to do about that is to say when u are able to play again. And then be there.
So I guess my tuesday night is all booked, coz I really have to play Wuderior.
Just my 5 cents on that subject.
To all who sits out there and dont do everything in their power to finish a saved game, just remember that it is another person who sits at the other end. And it is extremely impolite to string people along in any culture.

Yup, I sure do

But remember the time I sat trying to get U, Vex and Jinxer online at the same time? ;P
But I must admit Im abit more lazy when it comes to allied games, partly because that is where I have spent the most time trying to get all involved at the same time, which is next to impossible if u have 3 different timezones.
But hey Titan, we have also finished our fair share of allied games eh?
I have time on my hands again, so looking very much forward to the next allnighter, where we have loads of fun, and hopefully as much luck as against Ring and Ever, which we btw never did finish

hehe saves=

Saves normally end up being an unfinished game if its with a person u dont know that well. Saves with a person you know end up being a 10-30min continuation

Sometimes if i dont feel confident with they way a game is turning out i just give the win to my opponent.(yeah cowards way out i guess but i really hate wasting time)

I have unfinished games back from season 1 (simyar days) i got plenty of unifinished games with my false names Quintar/TheBlackKnight (never did get to finish beating flamingo up ) I always try my best to finish a game but i understand with Impotant things come up

unfinished games

Many times when a player has saved, and its close to a win for one, that player can report the save and description to TOH disputes, and usually will get the win for the game.  This is of course, only after the opponent doesnt want to finish or is making excuses.

It solves the problem, and allows at least partial credit for unfinished games you spent big time on.

Others, that you know well you tend to wait longer on, like my one game with philly_smoke; I had a sure win, final battle a day away, but he left.  Nearly 1 month later we finished it, but I did not fret, because I knew and trusted him to finish the next time I see him on zone, when we are both available.

Saves....I just hate them!!

I have had a problem with saves many times I have a few sitting in my folder at the moment...I usually ask if they can finish the game before we start....but that is no foolproof scheme...  Even with players that I know I dont like saving much because you may see them in the zone every day but you are in a game already or they are in a game already.

With reporting unfinished games where the player has dropped and disappeared off the face of the earth and the game is for toh....well these games I usually give up on cos the hassle is just not worth it...but I have had many many many of these and they make me very angry.

If I am having a really bad game and there is no way that I can win I will concede the game and suggest that we have a rematch.  But those newbies out there who drop when they see how strong your hero is..... really suck.  Maybe we should post somewhere unfinished games....wow the list would be long...lol

The list?! My god, Queenie, you're the first person who's said this yet! How many of you have to periodically clean out your save games folder? LOL going through your saves can be pretty funny sometimes. Erm... can't remember this game. Delete.

Ummmm, can't remember that one either! Delete

Oh. Who was that person again? Delete!

The list goes on and on. Generally I try and finish my saves and besides, I'm such a dodgy player that I usually don't need to save (because I'm usually dead by week 2, lmao!). But occaisionally I get those games where everything's going nice and smooth and I'm confident of having the upper edge. 7 towns for me. 2 towns to you. You lost your main week 3 attacking that 'topia and I'm mowing everything down. Woohoo, looks like I might win this one!

"Hey, Shae, I gotta go and let my wife use the phone for a while. Can we save?"

D'OH!

Or as I say, T'OH!

LOL I'm just kidding!

my way of solving thisthing

I usually ask my opponent if he is going to play until finishing the game or not; that is, how much time he got to play. The answers I usually got were until the end.

I only once got an answer from a guy as "4 hrs" so we played 4 hrs and saved and then continued and finished the game.

What I am saying is, ask your opponent how much time he got to play. And, in the case that your opponent wants to leave before the time aranged dont save and continue, report him to HC. (LOL, I am a headache for HC)

Or, if you dont like save&continue at all, dont start a game with those one who have limited times...

It's not a problem of save and continue. If two players are committed, then continuing a save is generally no problem. I think the problem is is that 'saving' comes often perilously close to being a legal way of dropping out of a game when you may be losing. I mean, if an opponent dropped out of a game and never came back for a few days, then they'll get reported. But if they say 'save it' and then never make an attempt to finish it, then they don't get reported and therefore suffer no loss.

I think that if you initiate the save, then it's your responsibility to make every effort to finish the game. It's only right that it should be done that way. And if you make no attempt to finish the game, then the opponent should be able to report the game as a win for them and a loss for you. Regardless of the state of the game.

Am I being harsh?

Nope Shae, I dont find u harsh at all.
Actually Ive done it a few times myself
My opponent dropped in a game I was pretty confident of winning, so I reported a win, sent a mail that I had reported a win, and if he wanted me to change that, he better show up to finish the game. Funny enough this has worked both times Ive done it.
Only problem with it is that it is only possible to coherse other ppl this way if they drop and dont come back. Would be kinda strange to do it if the other guy asked for a save. And it would lead to abit more work from the volunteers in TOH, so I really dont know if its a valid method.
Another problem Ive faced is when im the one asking for a save. Did that once where I started a game when I came back from being out drinking. He asked if I was able to finish the game, sure I answered. Only to find myself puking my guts out 3 hours later, lol.
I asked for a save, but he said no. Which was completely fair with me. So I gave him his deserved win, and asked if we couldnt save the game anyways and finish it. Free of charge offcourse.
When he said flat out no to that, I became kinda pissed, he had gotten his win for TOH, I mean if I did manage to win the game, it wouldnt touch his record one bit. So when he said we can always play a new game, I was like Oh yeah right. Thinking to myself yeah right when hell freezes over.
Hmmm just my 2 cents.

U are not harsh

You just dont seem to get my point. (actually, when I re-read my post I see that I have not explained my point fully)

I am not saying that every drop, or every uncontinued game should be reported.

I also dont claim that my proposition will fully solve the problems of people who suffer from this common plague:-)

I just think that, this way we may prevent playing wit "some" of the save&quitters...

As I have said, if your opponent says he has 3 hrs to play, and if you think that 3 hrs is not enough, then just dont play with him.

With regard to te drops, there is nothing we can do about them...Unfortunately... I see the games that dont continue becuz of the opponent drops as not have been played. And I never continue a game after 3 suspicious drops...

If it is me that drops, I propose to report my loss... (It just happened once, and my opponent said that he trusted me and we continued-he won the anyways) :-)

Madmartigan, you must think me a nut or something. Obviously if a person says he's got 3 hours to play then I'm going to tell him to go and play someone else.

What do you do when the person says 'I can play all night'?

What happens when 2 hours into the game and it looks like you're in a winning position, he says 'Sorry I have to leave'?

So far, Defreni's idea has been a good one. Threaten them with reporting a win if they don't come back. But that's not exactly regarded as honourable is it? I know that not finishing save games is not honourable either, but like they say, two wrongs don't make a right...
