Criticism: Destructive or Constructive
There are two kinds of criticism: destructive criticism and constructive criticism.
The difference between these two is very slight, but the effect might be totally different.
Destructive criticism tells your opinion directly, as it is.
Constructive criticism also tells your opinion, but more gently, and gives tips and place for improvement.
For example:
Destructive criticism: "This is not pretty at all"
Constructive criticism: "It will be much prettier if you add a bit green"
The effect of destructive criticism is very different than the effect of constructive criticism.
Destructive criticism might insult, make the criticized person feel bad or angry with the critic. It might also take from person his initiative to do new things.
However, constructive criticism less hurts the person. It leaves place for improvement, and helps him to make things better.
After doing very hard work, what would you prefer to hear:
"I don't like your work"
or
"The work will be much better, if you change X to Y"
Not a lot of people like to be destructively criticized, but a lot like to be constructively criticized, if it helps them to improve things.
I see that so many people use destructive criticism.
They don't know how easy is to use constructive criticism, and how different is the effect.
If everyone uses constructive criticism more than destructive criticism, the atmosphere in HC will be much better. It will be much more fun to be here for all of us.

Yes I agree.
But I think some people use destructive criticism as a form of defense, possibly to back up a statement, or perhaps to insult people, or just trying to get a rise out of people.
I do not know why criticism has to be destructive.
What happened to the good old "normal" criticism, where 2 or more people could criticize each other in a friendly and adult like manner.
Where has that gone?!?!
I have seen people doing destructive criticism in OSM mainly, since that place has become a warzone, and that is why I will not post there.
People need to learn when to let go, and just post peacefully, without having wars with one another.
I'm sorry, but this kind of stuff has gotta stop.
I have not been posting as much as I used to mostly because of what this place has become.
People, you all need to chill out!

I kinda agree, but not totally. While there is no need to flame - and constructive criticism is always nice - I also think that OSM is a place for people to discuss touchy subjects, and I think if you want to enter into such debate you should be ready for people to disagree with you.
There shouldn't be the need to sugar coat an argument with, fifty 'imho' or such. Just as much as pointless flame wars and personal attacks detract from the place, so do insipid arguments that degenerate into:
'Well, you're right too'
'Yeah, I see your point, we're all so smart, it's an amazing philosophical paradox that we can all be right'
'Isn't it just, seeing as we're so smart, we should write a book about that'
'Aren't we all special little snowflakes'
Nobody learns anything from such exchanges.
Obviously this is exaggerated (and I do agree with the general sentiment of the OP) but you can take things too far the other way too.

I generally agree but there will always be times where I'll just wish to give my honest opinion and I don't really care to explain how it could be better. I respect others and treat them well but I cannot simply comment on how each one's ideas could be better - assuming that I have a better idea myself. Nor do I always have the patience to search for ideas, let alone type them. Practically that would lessen my free time or I would ignore certain posts.
In any case this is a good thread in that clears an issue that many people should but do not seem to know well. Many do not even think that they could contribute and just reply. With this place being a community people should try to bring the best out of their forum-mates as it's something they share with them and by helping them they help themselves. Maybe it doesn't show by just helping in a proposal but through some small actions comes a wave of improvement.

It's called positive or negative criticism.
I will make a short but easiar to read definition.
Positive is the SImon Cowell way.
You criticise a person but at the same time you tell them what the problem is so they can work on thier problem.
Negative criticism is the traughter way.
When you criticise someone & do not explain why.
You just put down people for no reason & talk smack.
See simple explanation then writing all that & getting a -QP
