Problem with Universal Literature is that it's a very vast subject and most countries promote their own literature trough school system. So... if you are not from an english speaking country(even then...) or you don't read by yourself in your free time, you have no chance of going on a debate on this matter.
Myself, was till I got to university quite a reader. Managed to finish 5 volumes of Dune in 1 week. Sleep 4 hours a day, go to school and still read
As I am even more tighted up to computers trough university and the subjects on daily basis are about transistors, diodes, logical functions and such sort, I don't have the time for that anymore.
But as you can state from my ID, Shai-Hulud, I am a fan of the Dune series, probably my favourite book beacuse of its complex system treating political, psychological and ethical factors, and not being a book with 70% technical teaching about robots or fantasy creatures and 30% actual content. There so much to be said about Dune and so little
I value such books for the fact that they transmit philosophical teachings on very serious matters, but avoiding the problem with philosophy books which use hard to understand terminology like metaphysics and such sort.
My belief is that this type of books should be read by most people, as it really puts you to thinking for a better society.
Till this day I am still amazed by the fact that someone could think on such a grand scale. Maybe it was beacuse of the recent events involving WW2 and Cold War, but saying that humanity will last only if it will stop being lead by one man's visions is a grand statement which really puts you to thinking.
If one would ask me for a book to read, I would surely point him to Frank Herbert's Dune series, although mentioning the fact that in total the series has over 4000 pages kind of scares everybody off
