If you have to drink energy drinks or such to stay awake doing your work/shool work throuh night you have serious management problems with your life.

I don't like coffee or coke and have never even tasted energy drinks. I occasianally drink tea though.

I don't need any refreshments to get up on morning. I just get up, eat, read morning paper,{insert usual morning stuff here} and go where ever I'm going.

It sounds like you are a fairly heavy caffiene user {you even take tablets right}.

I really find it hard to believe that one coffee can do this for you.  I may be wrong of course, and I'm not calling you a liar, it is just hard to believe.  If you are talking about having one in the morning - are you eating at the same time?  Because food can have the same benefit (breakfast) of starting your metab.

As for no evidence of caffiene damaging your body, lemmie have a look around.  I have it in my head that it attacks the kidneys...  can't put my finger on it though.

The whole "it's a natural substance it can't be bad" always makes me laugh.  There are plenty of toxins in nature that can kill us .

im definitly not an overly excessive caffeine junkie lol.. i have 2 coffees a day, and yes i do indulge in energy drinks, soft drinks, even caffeine tablets now and again. In fact im drinkin a coffee right now. Lol i come from an italian background, i can remember drinking coffee since i was a kid - just a natural part of life (and im talking the good stuff - short blacks, cuppacino n da like )
My whole family drinks coffee, and your right, it doesnt have quite te same effect. But i got an exam tomoro, i had one today, and i got 2 more later in the week. I havent studied much, but i no that with a coffee, il have the energy, and more importantly the concentration to stay up and sleep VERY little this week. Caffeine is my lifeline lol.. So just to finish your point, yes your right. Caffeine doesnt have the same strength as it may have once had, but it still does the job. I could actually go to bed and sleep straight after a coffee no problem, but my discipline mixed with the caffeine gives me the edge to stay awake.

OK. There are hundreds, probly millions of natural lethal toxins in the world. Im sorry i confused u, i didnt mean natural guarentees safety, i was more aiming at the fact that a natural compound is "usually" safer then man made concoctions. Lol yes i confuse myself too sometimes haha but you have to realise, there is a great demand for natural products; products like caffeine are natural.

haha on ur second point, u are right, there is evidence of caffeine harming your body. However after conducting small scale research, i can accurately conclude that it often takes extreme doses of caffeine, and even moderately large doses must be consumed over long periods of time. Il use your natural argument to a degree here; you pointed out that there are many natural toxins in the world. However even beneficial remedies can be just as deadily is extreme quantities. Dont you agree? Look at sugar, even salt; they pose a far greater risk to your body then caffeine does. Sugar can give u diabetes, salt can block arteries and do alot of other bad stuff that i cant remember lol..

Is my argument a little more conclusive? haha i look forward to your response kookie..

Thanks
DT

I am an university student now.

And when the exam sessios comes upon us ... Its simply impossible to go by with that extra extra energy. You simply can't. You want good grades? Need to stay up from 9 AM till 7-8 PM almost continous studying.. You smply can't go otherwise!

And what the heck do you do if you need to get a job aswell? I don't know how it is around your place Joonas, but hell if i could go over all this crap relying only on my sheer will.

As to add a few notes that some will find usefull:

1. Don't try milk and linden flowers tea. It will make you sleepy. Doesn't help you very much does it?

2. For all those that think coffee, energizers and stuff like that is bad i stumbled upon another option: Black and Green Tea. Also it has positives effects on other organs than the brain. Since the thread was created i switched to a combination of coffee and black tea. It seems it gets me going. Coffee for keeping me up, black tea for accelerating brain activity.

I can actually feel my eyes much more relaxed and my my mind more concentrated. To add more, a small cup of coffee a day actually does good as scientific research has shown.

So to sum up...
1. Try to combine different products. Don't go excessive in just one!

2. If anyone dares to say stuff like: "If you depend on coffee to finish your work, you really have serious time management problems" please get to a real university first. And by real I mean 30 hours + a week, projects, and serious exams ... Just try a Polytechnic Institute or a Medicine University. Those already there should know what the heck I am talking about.

In relation to school/uni work, for me anywayz it would be impossible to survive without a caffeine injection. Sure i could continue to study, continue to work, but its been proved that energy drinks and coffee increase productivity, and help with concentration levels and the like. I am 100% sure of this fact after my exams last week. I managed to sleep a max 16-18 hours monday, tuesday, wednesday, and thursday night, because i was staying up until 1am studying, and getting up at 5-6am to continue. THis includes studying all day, and watever else i need to do. I drank energy drinks especially, and after about 15 minutes after consumption, for a duration of roughly 2-4 hours, i noticed a vast increase in concentration. This allowed me to study longer, harder, and learn more. Sure i could of started studying weeks before, but im lazy lol and i passed my exams, so it seems that week from hell was worth it. However without caffeine, after tuesday or wednesday, theres no way my body would have functioned sufficiently enough to learn the course and do the exam. Then theres the added effects of gym, and watever else i filled my time with.

Obviously the preferable option would be to keep up to date wif my work, and therefore not rely on caffeine. However im living proof that caffeine improves productivity levels, and if u want that extra something for your exam, then you cant go wrong. Just to note, i did drink a coffee before my exam, and it helped me concentrate and keep awake more importantly during my exams. I did not risk an energy drink, just in case the higher levels of caffeine and guarana or whatever else works the magic caused any ill effects (over arousal - too "pumped up" for the exam causing careless mistakes)

We use them to "wake" us in the morning. We use them to get those wheels working. We use them to get some of the frustration in the background.

Some of us state: "I can give up whenever I want."
But there are still that hold on: "Hell with coffee. It's the devil's work. Impale the producers."

All that even though studies have shown on the long run, all go bad on our health.( I hope Corribus doesn't see this topic  - he will bash me 3 times to the ground )

I don't know if all of these are true, but some hell sure are....  I am experiencing them myself!

As long as I've really started to study and put my brain to work ( meaning 6th grade) i started to drink coffee. By the 12th grade I had blood in coffee, not coffee in blood in my veins . This year i turned to coke.

Energy drinks.. I had a few of those too. I like the taste alot. But can't seem to figure out if they work on me. Must be a placebo effect involved also?
We all heard of the famous Red Bull( I think). But for those of you who don't know it contains Taurine. But don't think someone is milking the bulls  .

Some parents are strict when it comes for their children to drink this stuff. But still, they can't stop themselves from drinking it. My parents tried that on me. But just a little at first.

Nowdays children seem to drink more coffee (and alchohol) even more then their parents. And they grow up with this need. Maybe it's my opinion based only on the IT sector, and the others don't suffer this. You go in a lunch break in an IT office and you'll probably see alot of people in their 20's drinking their coffees and having their cigs. If you ask them why do they do it instead of drinking some orange juice mostly they will say :" get me up in the morning". But it's been 4 hours since morning

So...
Do you think coffee and all those derivates are wrong?
If so, you still consume them?
You feel addicted to them?

And the top question...
If your child needs to stay up all night to work on projects, do you let him consume the above?

I do not agree that we should give coffee and beverages like red bull to our children.
As you already discuss in these quotes and I am fulfill agree with these quotes.

Given the thread is from 2007, from then until now, coffee has been researched a lot, specially regarding the fitness and health industry and, in not exaggerated portions per day, is highly effective. On fitness side, it aids strength, focus and other supportive effects.

I don't like much the idea of coffee for kids, except if diluted with something else. It might make the children overactive, disturb their resting moments and other small issues. And children often don't have the sense of control over the amount of things they ingest. If they get a liking to coffee, then they'll drink it.

These soft drinks and all this tosh of energy drinks I stay clear of them. Taurine alone won't save a beverage and put in on the healthy list either. Education regarding these drinks and exchanging this garbage for juices, water and other non processed stuff must be harder. But that's up to each family to judge. Although I find very strange that a family of overly fat people feels like making their children go the same alley they went to become unhealthy fat with junk food. Making an example works both ways.

Alcohol is another matter. Around here, young people find it 'cool' starting to drink at young age. Most of times to match their friends' coolness. Now, how these friends started to drink to start with? Maybe their parents encouraged or didn't care to talk about it, maybe hidden, for curiosity, etc. The feeling of getting drunk, then getting untouchable, better, unstoppable, bolder (and somehow fancier) – it all appeals to the young minds; and those who are impressed by it follow in suit. The worst thing is that they feel that they are detached from bad things, that nothing will hurt them. Then, they get in a car, go driving wildly, because that's very cool, then smash themselves somewhere, kill themselves, or worse, kill someone else who has nothing to do with that cool stupidity. And then, there's these chained social problems around here, leading to alarming rates of young people being involved in accidents after drinking alcohol. And no matter how harsh Anti-alcohol campaigns are, these people only learn when they bleed.

Coffee is good as a ONCE A DAY beverage, either around breakfast or lunch.

For more sustained energy, green tea is preferable.

Or you can simply omit caffeine entirely, but it seems to be perfectly fine in moderate amounts.

And of course, don't add any animal products to your drinks

Energy drinks are poison.
