All sides cultures
A topic where you can put a singularity of your people culture like parties, myths, etc.
For example, in Brazil, my country, we have the myth of the headless horse, who is a female horse with fire in the head's place.
Like the people says, this horses was once women who fell in love by catolic priests.
This myth is very strong in the north and northeast areas of the country, but everybody knows the history.

I've heard a myth about an honest politician once, but weren't interested since although I love fantasy that's just too much...
There's really a lot of myths here... For example, about some dude, Sava Savanovic, who was a vampire (that's a relatively new one, came up just about a couple of centuries ago). Or about Vila Ravioila, she was an elf which helped one of mythologically greatest heroes around (Marko Kraljevic) with a bunch of stuff and was also his lover, as presumed. But most myths mostly involve humans (battles, adventures, events etc) and are mostly set in the middle ages; that's why it's kind of hard to draw a solid line between myths and history in that.
There's a lot of mixture of paganism and christianity in everyday's life, too (for example the customs of House Saints - every family has a saint as its protector - in ancient times the custom was the same but there were spirits instead of saints; or Badnyak - an oak branch brought into the house in the eve before Christmas - also originating from pagan mythology and much much more). It's kinda fun.

What's interesting about Dracula is that although everybody thinks it's a Romanian myth, in fact it was created by Bram Stoker who transformed Vlad Tepes(a cruel but righteous king - "voievod" in my language, it can't be translated and it doesn't mean king just something like it) into Dracula, and also Vlad Tepes never lived in Bran Castle which now is named The Castle of Dracula.
also if interested in real Romanian folklore search "zmeu" or "fat-fumos" or "iele".....

The Balkans... so many legends are here...
Here are the first believe in vampires, in evil ghosts, in variational undeads, demons...
Kraly Marko (or Marko Kraljevic) was real historical person, now he is in the folklore of almost all countries in the Balkans.
Interesting custom is the Nestinarstvo (Fire-dancing), read more about it here, we can see nestinar's (Fire-dancers) in Greece too, but the truth is that the Greek land where the people practise Nestinarstvo, are old bulgarian territories with bulgarian inhabitants.
Nestinarka (Fire-dancer) in national bulgarian dress
There are so many interesting traditions...

Quote: Voievod literally means army-leader.
Quote: in what language?
Voievoda, is commander of a military force. The word is used in all Slavic languages from 11 century (not sure but it was 11 or 10...) In Bulgaria the leaders of Haiduti rebels (they were kind of rebels against the turks) under the Ottoman Empire were called "voevodes" this was 120 years ago. Now the word in only in the books.

in Romanian it doesn't mean anything literally, but it's a term used for the kings of Moldavia and Walachia in the Middle Age.

Actually Watcher it kinda means what the other said.
Voievods didn't hold religious power or social power. They were only the rulers of the army, the rich ones supported him trough money they got from the peasants. The fact that some of the voievods were ruling over the rich class can be explained only trough one fact : tirany. See the case of Alexandru Lapuseanul.
Remember that our language has been quite influenced by the slavic world around us.Romania is actually an island of latinism in a sea of slavism.

Alexandru Lapusneanu tried to take power away from the nobils(boieri)because they were not in service of Moldavia but for foreign rulers which would give them more wealth and transfer it to him to return Moldavia to its former glory, but on the way to doing that lost track of his goals and became a bloody ruler.
Stefan cel Mare (Moldavia's greatest voievod) was the leader of the army but also had tremendous social, religious and all the other powers and his rule marked a golden age for us.
