some kind of joke?
WTF??
If you mind graphics, then StarCraft is pathetic, but for me graphics is nearly irrelevant in a RTS. The gameplay in SC is godly and surpasses any other RTS I have ever played, and I played nearly all aforementioned, at least for a while .
No other RTS offers gameplay that is both dynamic and can last long, three completely different factions that are nearly perfectly balanced, and such amount of fun. Not to mention the fact that both the single and the multiplayer are near to perfection, and AI is quite decent for a RTS.
IMO not calling StarCraft the greatest RTS released is... at least weird .

Untill now, it's still one of the most legendary rts, yet there are many other good rts games.
But modern rts rarely give any new features now. Almost all of them are boring. That's why starcraft still one of the best, for me, it's second after spellforce series.

I fully agree with what I marked in bold.
Yet I was kinda outraged when TA called StarCraft a joke... .
It's one of the greatest, as watcher said, and for me the greatest one, since I don't mind its weak graphics.
I like AoE, W3, Warhammer 40000, and many C&C, yet StarCraft is better than all of these for me.

Indeed it is sad that most of the truly innovative RTSes were released during the big RTS boom in 97. Almost all the new features in the genre since 2000 or so were functional tweaks for ease of play or minor novelties. Therefore, it is natural that the oldies reign supreme.

I'd like to point out that Age of Mythology offers not just 3, but 4 different races/faction/nations, and that its expanssion offered the fourth, where Starcraft could not be bothered making a 4th.
Not to metion that the total number of races in AOM is arguably 12: 3 for each of the 4 races. (Greeks: Zeus, Poseidon, Hades; Norse: Thor, Odin, Loki; Egyptians: Ra, Set, Isis; Atlanitis: Kronos, Gaia, Oranos) All of the 9(12) civilizations have different play stratagies, though some are more varied than before.
Also, Monkey Wrench for you: Age of Mythology (as well as Age of Empires) teaches a lot of history. I learned a lot about mideval warfare, cultures, where we came from and how we got to where we are from that game.

Oh, I tried learning history from games too. Only I did it with Civilization 2. Poland conquered Russia in 1000BC, then proceeded south to smack the Chinese with the help of their Irish brothers. That's when I started wondering.

Age of Mythology
would get my vote as best RTS... but its in bad company... only problem is, i can't decide if AoM or AoE3 is the odd one out... in any case, AoM is quite accurate, not in the way the story plays out of course, but in the info about each unit, technology and whatnot

I wouldn't say AoM races' difference is able to compare with starcraft's.
Its a good game tho, but Starcraft is still THE RTS imho.
I don't think anyone mentioned it before in this thread but i find starcraft's story superb as well.

Well I meant it by saying it has single player near to perfection, but you pointed it directly first, yasmiel .
@above:
eh... you must be kinda weird, TA . Take no offence . I do not understand why you think this game is horrid ? I would understand :'not the greatest, but still great', as others say, but horrid ?
Starcraft does not bore me after nearly 1k hours of gameplay: campaign, LAN and net. I simply love this game, so perhaps hence my zeal .
