You probably know that demons are fallen angels according to christian beliefs. The inverted wings are probably to show that they took the opposite path. That said angels are incorporeal, usually appearing as light - the winged human form is a matter of tradition

Well just one of the few artistic touches Just as the inscriptions on the inquisitors's robes mean something like holiness.

EDIT: Ah a new update. Things I did not know too One thing, cerberi were at tier 3 since they appeared with H4 the exception where there were 4 tiers in total. I'd say that's just how the unit is perceived, a lowly-mid strong creature and Nival did follow 3do in a few things.

About the Puck/Robin Goofellow question, both were well known in English folklore long before Shakespeare.  I don't know dates, but I do know that the Puck is another older word for devil or evil spirit.  There are similar words from several European cultures, including Pooka (which was what Jimmy Stewart called his rabbit friend in the movie Harvey).

Robin is another name for Robert and may be related to the name Dob, or Old Dobby, which is one name used for the Devil.  People of the middle ages would use Robin Goodfellow, and several other names to speak euphemistically about the devil, since naming him was said to conjure or invite him.

I like your idea about the inverted wings Elvin, that seems as likely to me as any other explanation of Nival's choices.  After all, the idea of winged angels is a concept added to angels by later people, not in the Bible (I don't think... again, could be wrong here).  Angels were creatures of light, they didn't necessarily need wings.  Even Lucifer comes from the word Luc (light) in latin.

By the way, sorry I'm don't respond quicker to posts.  On top of learning a new job I'm having to take several classes this semester, so I'm slammed with work.  Right now I should be writing my homework for class, but this is so much more fun.

LOL! And we have Dobby in harry Potter so Roin Goodfellow has survived these days in another form
Learning that Lucifer comes from light is funny too.

Don't worry you are doing a fine job and replies can wait.

Yes, that's interesting, I did not know of the Dobby - Devil relation. Certainly is interesting in view of the HP character.

I view it more as a Robin reference, Dobby never was evil or had bad intentions plus he's the type of 'elf' that can create a mess and disappear in the blink of an eye

Oh... oh... I just had an epiphany about the winged question.

So I was thinking about Griffons, planning out what I might say there when it suddenly occured to me, creatures with wings often represent transcendence, the ability to rise up toward heaven, to escape our earthly bonds of the flesh.  Right, so flying creatures are usually about the good things.  On the other hand, creatures of earthly nature are usually about our fleshly desires.  So... maybe the reason devils and demons of the Inferno faction have inverted wings is accidentally symoblic of flying downward, you know, instead of going up toward heaven and light, they constantly drive downward toward earth and 'darkness'.

By the way, it's not important if the programmers at Nival actually meant to do it that way.  Jungian psychology is about collective unconscious... in other words, we do things in art and literature symbolically whether we mean to or not because things like myth symbols are shared by everyone, no matter what our culture (at least sometimes).  If you're interested in this kind of symbol interpretation or understanding dreams and that kind of thing, do a little search on Jungian Psychology, but be careful, there are a lot of bull**** sites out there.

Oh, and that doesn't mean the flying dream you had the other night had anything to do with going to heaven.  Flight can also have strong sexual overtones.  I guess that's because of the er... rising and falling 'action'.  Especially the falling part....

Anyone who doesn't buy it, think about this.  Snakes are an earthly creature.  They crawl on the ground and can't get above the dirt.  Well, not to put to fine a point on it, but snakes look like what part of the male anatomy?  Heck, why do ya think snakes are thought of as creatures of the flesh.  It couldn't have anything to do with that could it?

This reminded me something I had heard about the griffin. It is also viewed as a symbol of Jesus Christ because it is a union of an earthly beast and an aerial bird that represents human and divine. Strong and with the power to ascend to the heavens.

Good call about the inverted wings though it was probably a subconscious choice
