My point is that it would make creeping pretty easy except maybe squires. Maybe later on it could be balanced but usually ranged power early especially after combining armies and upgrading helps a lot.

Hmmm.... What would you suggest, given the fact tier 4 - 7 should be left as they are? A tier 2 flyer instead?

Tier 1 - Shooter
Tier 2 - Flyer / Caster
Tier 3 - Shooter

That's obviously too weak late-game then, but setting tier 2 and 3 as shooters, leaves tier 1 a way too weak and obvious fodder unit.

Something about Haven having the perfect lineup seems kinda revolting XD But I think everyone would agree that raises an obvious question : What kind of lineup would be able to break Haven ?

Well Haven is only might fanction so far and has most strongest line up. Perhaps Bastion can challange them in might. There aren't line up what could match Havens might but that dosen't stop magic heroes to break them in early games.

For Anti-Haven i would select Academy perhaps whit their defensive\range creatures. Other than that Fortress works very well on very long games what both towns favor. This has very little to do whit line ups but Haven can be countered in late game where they seem to be superior.

What kinda creature would break Haven? That would be Super Trent whit 11 Initiative and 10 Speed! *Hugs Paladins*

Theoretically a faction that would have a high tier shooter - hopefully not large, a charging melee faster than the paladins along with one or two fast damage dealers and a tank. If the paladins are charged they are harder to joust and the other melee could keep them from your high tier shooter. Naturally I'd want a tier 1 or 2 shooter for reasons outside the haven match. With light/dark school maybe.
A bit too general

If I had to make a perfect lineup it would be:

Level 1: - Defenders: sturdy/ allow for creeping
Level 2: - Crossbowman/Marksmen: both good at what they do with defenders and these you have a great creeping combination of a strong defensive unit and a stronger offensive
Level 3: - Blackbear Rider: - Superior in almost all stats, great specials, high defense and health.
Level 4: - Imperial Griffin - fast and beautifully balanced in all areas, wonderful special
Level 5: - Zealot - strong, high hp defense, deadly spells, shooter this unit is the best level 5 by a long shot.
Level 6: - Pit Lords (hard to choose between them and paladins) Imagine the onslaught these and the Zealots could create on the battlefield! It's wierd even though both these and zealots are casters they are very durable.
Level 7: - Fallen Angel= Pure evil

I don't think anyone would want to ever meet an army like this!

Makes me wonder what you need the Gargoyles for if you have got hydras to guard the elfs?

Their magic immunity serves well if the enemy blast you with des-spells and your hydras cant take the magical punch.

My "perfect" lineup would consist of;

Tier 1: Familiars. Their mana sapping and giving it to me is very useful

Tier 2: Marksman. Close up they are deadly, forcing archer-killers to keep their distance.

Tier 3: Minotaur Guard. I love their double axe attack, and are immune to morale lowers.

Tier 4: Hand up to the Archmage, if I miss Arcane training, their energy channel will help me. And with even more. They are jsut nasty!

Tier 5: Silver Unicorns. These beauties, protects my other units with its aura and also blinds the enemy to a standstill.

Tier 6: The Wraith. Their harm touch skill are not as bad as many say. Saves me from trouble thanx to enemy lvl 7 units, also they can take a huge chunk from lower tiers.

Tier 7: Black D...(no they even took damage from a 2nd chain bolt of chain lightning, I would go for Magma Dragon. Its slooow but it serve alot of protection for my more fragile units with its great HP, attack and defense etc.

My Familiars sap away mana and give it to me, and my Archmages reduce my spell cost. They again deal good damage, especially the Archies. The latter though must let go for protection from my Magmas, Mino Guards and Wraiths, when mana used up, since their shots pass through everything! until then the Minotaur Guards will protect them up front the Silver unicorns will protect them and the Familiars from the sides, while the wraith slaughter incoming 11 0' clock 7evens and my magama dragons works out its mightyness on approaching melee suiciders and tanks and let take their beating from the magma shield and the elemental attitude of the magmas saves them from oblivion even more.

This lineup is mostly focusing in use of special abilites (mana siphon, energy channel, magical aura, magma shield etc) and a defensive approach. With the familiars and the arch mages helping me keeping my spell points up I haste slower units like Minotaur Guards, Magmas and Wraiths. The Silvers guards as many as possible with its aura in the meantime.

I chose mine based on just the sheer power of the creatures themselves, not factoring in the hero.

So in other words what would be the best lineup to have on a level 1 hero.

If I factored in a hero I might switch familiars with defenders even though they are a bit more pricey.

Level 7: Offensive flyer. Example: Archangel. Again, versatility and offensive power is key features here. Mobility is crucial, as a mobile level 7 creature (Angel, Devil, Dragon) will be a huge aid in late-game sieges.

I would like to call a "perfect" 7th tier unit a Tactical Offensive Unit. What I mean is that it dosn't have to be a flyer, it just has to have good abilities. I mean, there are so many tactics that invlove 7th tier creatures, it's important to have a good use of a your strongest unit. The only examples of non-tactical 7th tier units are the Spectral, Emerald, and Magma Dragons.

The Spectral Dragon is just too weak, The Emerald Dragon doesn't have any intresting tactical abilities, and the Magma Dragon is too much of a tank. The Archangel is a strong offensive flyer, and it can ressurect other units as well. Black Dragon is super-powerfull and can resist any spell. Titans have range attack, and the Call Lightning can be nice as well. The Archdevil, althoguh can be considered relatively weak, is an excelent tactical unit being a teleporter and having the ability to ressurect units as Pit Lords.

My best setup would be....
------

Lv. 1
Familiars, because they will be good against magic heroes.
(approx. 50% of all heroes =D)

lv. 2
Crossbowman, as ranged support to the low lv. creatures.

lv. 3
Blacbear riders, tought and good melee unit, whit good abilities.
can be in both offence and defence.

lv. 4
Vampire lord, because its a fast offensive flying unit, whit ability to drain and resurect fallen vampires.

lv. 5 alternative
Rune Keeper, because they are good ranged units, whit good spells, and they last long =). Besides the 2 fireballs are more useable than a single firewall, in my tactics. (cant wait for the expansion to get out =D)

lv. 6
Warlord, because of its great abilities (stormstrike in particular).
meaning that serval units can be dammaged if standing together.

lv. 7
Emerald dragon, because its a strong offensive flyer, whit good abilities. (Black dragons are good, but they are more expensive.)

lvl 2: marksman
lvl 3: squires
lvl 4: archmage
lvl 5: unicorn
lvl 6: paladin
lvl 7: titan

is what I'd say off-hand, but you know what I notice?  no fliers! hah!  lotsa specials though. squires/marksman are such an awesome combo.

If I have to choose best of each tier:
1. Familiars - no need to explain. Gated ones drain mana too. Because of them inferno can win even a late game vs fortress(with no tap runes) or haven.
2. Marksmen - precise shot is insane. If opponent has only 2x2 creeps (because haven player already killed the others) he will have to attack squires and taste a precise shot, or just wait and die. Marksmen are the only level 2 that can actually really matter even late game.
3. Blackbear riders - ridiculous unit, a chance for a paw strike is way too high.
4. Imperial griffins - battle dive is always a huge threat - as long as it targets the right spot that is.. Anyway, the potential benefit is the best of all lvl 4.
5. Nightmares - 1st turn fear attack can pretty much decide the battle.
6. Paladins - joust to kill. If it's likely that palas will be attacked first then defense skill is what they need.
7. Magma dragons - it looks like a lvl 8 to me. 280 hp, 40 defense and magma shield = lol

As flattering as it is to see an old topic created by yours truly being revived, it's somewhat aggrivating to see it happens in a totally off-topic kind of way xD The main discussion was about what creature types do well at a specific level, and personally, I find it rather sad to think that Haven in fact has the perfect lineup.

Hence I asked, what sort of lineup would be best to take down Haven? Such as in Heroes3, where Fortress perfectly had a tier 6 and 3 flyer lined up against Castle's tier 5 and 2 shooter, and a tier 5 with a super special to handle the tier 7.

Perhaps I'm thinking a bit too much rock-paper-scissors like, but to think Haven's lineup is the top notch is... Well, not fitting right with me.

Perfect overall lineup aside, another question to be asked could be, what's your FAVORIT sort of lineup? And don't all spam HAVEN now
