I wonder... what is the story with Lizard towns and Faerie towns? Did all the towns revolve around themes like this? Seems they were going for a very different approach than before.

Not really. The towns always had something which would characterise them. It's just not as striking when you see "Fortress" insted of Lizard Town. The themes always were in exsistance, you just missed them.

Of course, since it's much easier to draw than to build it in game. Besiedes, I doubt a H5 with perfect texture (like those seen in artworks) will run on a normal computer.

But take the NWC Lizard town and compare it with the HIII Fortress... far more actual lizards in the HV one, so the theme is much more definite (unlike a town focused around general swamps, insects and serpents)

@nebdar: I also used some of them as wallpapers. If you are interested, I have about 30 Heroes wallpapers. Feel free to use them. I think I also have a Might&Magic VII wallpaper somewhere.

Yes it was concept art. But you should note that many different artists worked on the game, from all around the world. Not only in Russia. Many of them have a certain style which doesn't look as appealing than others' artists works.
The images which I posted were made by the same artists who designed the Fortress faction (every creature other than the dragons) and a huge amount of buildings. You might notice that he never actually colors his images. There were other people on the team that did it.
