Opposite Alignments: Part 1.

Okay, I guess my tournament of towns got a bit of a releuctant response.  Ah well, I'll make this a bit more specific.  Maybe that will get people talking! Yeah!  Umm...anyway, instead of towns, I'll try comparing skills and see what you all think.

Round 1: Necromancy vs. Diplomacy.  What skill would you rather have?

IŽll go for diplomacy, because I dont play necropolis much. And you get many different creatures with dplomacy, not just skeletons. But if I ,for once, should pick Necropolis I would of course choose necromancy. I hate having necropolis with other heroes.

Diplomacy for me...

In my opinion, dead creatures should either be resurrected back like they were (H4 Haven resurrection), or just stay dead. Thats why I don't like the idea of necromancers and undead. Sure necromancy is a powerful skill, but it's not my style. And after all, diplomacy is a good choice, especially when you are not playing Necropolis....

diplo for me

I see it this way, I get 20% chance of ALL the creatures (@ basic), max at 60% chance of all creatures (@ expert)...
or +10% of skellies.
besides, if you don't really like those joining troops, use the skeleton transformer

Define a map....
Random XL, I would go either, If you get Isra or Vido, definately go for necro. Ive had as high as 3000 skels in the 5th or 6th week of a random game. just a quick antimagic on them, and you are unbeatable, no matter how good the diplo is.

...I don't really see any choices to pick from...necromancy and diplomacy? Who would opt for necromancy? Well, at the very least, my confidence remains with the fine art of diplomacy.

I have to agree with Rychen.  If you can get Isra or Vidomia on a Xlg random there is no choice.

I've lost too many times to Jex on randoms where he gets Isra or Vidomia.  How can you compete with 800+ skeletons week 3?  What can you do against that?  Or the 300-500 skeletons you can have in week 2?

Try it sometime, you may be surprised at how powerful it is.  There is a reason why the top guys in toh outlaw necro heroes in large random maps.

Diplomacy

I don't help it, I just love it. But of course, if we are talking about Isra, the choice is going to be a hard one. I would go for Cyra, Ryland and Adela but on XL map any Necro will do a much better job. With many Nercomancy Amplifiers and Isra, she's going to raise more troops of the same alignement than Cyra. Note, necromancy adds troops for FREE, while diplomacy usually requires money.

Both are best combination

However, forced to choose- I would actually take diplo most circumstances without discussing map types.

It's true that in larger maps necromancy is unbeatable- I've used that too my advantage many times, but if you play a normal map without savage always on, diplo can be stronger than necro quicker. There is some toh map, a little one on one I think? Where dragons guard the middle and are set only to aggressive- if you get a diplo hero you can almost always get a join of 11+ dragons in week 2, you need at least 1 dragon in your army for like army type, and advanced diplo so if they ask for money it's affordable. That is just an example, but you would have trouble getting that much power so quickly with necro. Also the surrender costing less money is under-rated by alot of people. I'd rather pay 6,000 and keep my army than have to lose 50% of it and still pay around 8,000. The caveat in ToH is that most maps creatures are set to savage, and in that case diplo isn't as useful. Even in randoms, since the 7th level creatures can be savage depending the map setting, it takes so long to get a powerful enough army to inspire them to join that necro is better, you can get lots of little 3-5 level units to join, but overall necro is stronger because you are limited to a certain amount of slots in your army, if the slots were infinite, then diplo better, but only id- it's not so... Now the worst is necro hero with diplo skill. Best games I've ever had were that combo and lots of V-lords or vamps join me... the larger v-lords #'s the harder to defeat, once you get around 80 or so, unless you wipe them out in the first or second round, they almost impossible to beat with animate dead.

diplo for isra

from my experiences with diplo, most of the time when creatures join, they don't ask for money

in the case of vidomina or isra:

of course it's a tough choice, but I'd still settle for diplo ... AND build the skeleton transformer  <-- because hey, I'm getting 100% necromancy here

It's almost guaranteed that the next lvl up will be necromancy, while diplo may never show up again.  Also, these new recruits will likely save my skeleton's lives (as fodder), if I play my battles right.

I'd say Diplomacy.

As cool as it is having lots of skeletons, they just don't mix well with non-necro armies.

Hopefully the new alignment system in Heroes IV will allow Skeletons to mix with chaos and/or order without penalty. (of course, chaos and order can't mix together in an army...)

I usually...

...don't like to play with the Undead...I prefer mostly the Angels Castle troops even on maps that are shouting for Necromancers Castle as your starting town...so I guess Diplomacy is more often a choice for me rather than Necromancy...Thank you !
