Heroes 2 on Vista

Hi there,
I have always liked Heroes 2, recently for my birthday I got a laptop with Vista Home Basic in it.
As a fan of Heroes 2 one of the first things that I did is installing the game of course, unfortunately the game simply doesn't work.
After the installation I went to the Heroes 2 folder, and tried to open HEROES2W.exe, the game was looking like loading up but then just nothing, "HEROES2W has stopped working", I ask for details and it shows me this:
Files that help describe the problem:
 C:\Users\Daniel\AppData\Local\Temp\WER2C41.tmp.version.txt
 C:\Users\Daniel\AppData\Local\Temp\WERA990.tmp.appcompat.txt
 C:\Users\Daniel\AppData\Local\Temp\WERAA0E.tmp.mdmp
Could someone please help me to fix this problem? I really love Heroes 2 and I really don't know how to fix this problem.
Please help!
-Daniel

Hm... It should work fine with no compatibility changes on Home Premium... I don't know about Basic, perhaps there's a patch somewhere...
Until then, try reinstalling it, or installing from another CD or something. I doubt that will help though, but don't know what else to say.
You can always get Vista Home Premium It'll cost you a bit though but hey, if it's for Heroes...

Hey,
My laptop is pretty much ok, Vista basic works slowly but still normal I suppose, however I highly doubt that Vista Home Premium would here normally.
I have already installed Heroes 3 different times and nothing has changed so I guess there is no need to do it again.
Thank you for your answer, I will be looking for a patch but I would be very very VERY thankful if you guys would help me to search for one as well because I doubt that I am able to find one alone, so please
Thanks

That 2nd file that was the problem, the "appcompat", maybe it is because Heroes2 might not be compatible with your OS?

Perhaps try running the program in compatibility mode for Windows 956 or Windows 98.

I do not understand. Could you please explain more?
-Edit: I right click'd HEROES2W.exe-> compatibility tab and I choose and tried compatibility with Windows 95,98,XP, and still got the same error.

What I am saying, is that file, the 2nd one that you presented as your OS provided you with the details of the error, the "appcompat", probably means it has something to do with Homm2 and it's compatibility with your system.

Did you download the game, or did you buy it?

What version is the game?
I mean, is it Homm2 Gold, the exp or just the original?

You should try looking for a patch, for example:

Type in google "homm2 Gold patch"

Or instead of "gold" type in whatever game you have, the original or the exp.

Looking forward to your response.

click on the icon on ur desktop for Heroes 2, then rightclick, go to properties >> compatibility >> and then there's a run as operating system thing, click that and chose XP or earlier.

Dude, i already suggested that, it did not work.

He chose Win 95 and 98.

It didn't work.

Maybe you should read the topic, and every[ post within it

The game is downloaded, when I was young, I had the original disk but during the years the disc got scratches and such.
The version of the game is the original one, The Succession Wars.

Try to find a patch for the original then

And it might, just might have something to do with the fact that it is downloaded.

Try buying it, and if it still does not work, then maybe get a external hard drive, load win98 onto there (or win2000), and then boot from that hard drive.

I have Windows 2000 and Heroes 2 works fine.

It might be the OS, and it's compatibility with the game, because I am unable to run Heroes 1 for some reason.

I think the older games only work on the sorta older OS, obviously.

I will try to find a patch, but I dont think it has something to do with the fact that the game is downloaded simply because it works in my brother's computer flawlessly and he got XP and of course the same downloaded file.

Then that means it is definitely Vista that is the problem.

But try the patch, and see if it works.

If it doesn't, post back here

Good luck

Exactly what files were within the patch download?

Did you place the patcher in the heroes2 directory? along with the other files (if any) in there too?

It is only one .exe file nothing more than that, I tried to run it in the heroes2 directory and outside but not success.

Ok, let's see...
First file seems to be the info file showing the version of your game, second file shows the application compatibility, 3rd is not identified yet.

This file should be located in your main directory of H2. If not, installation wasn't complete. It is needed for the patch to run properly.

So my suggestion is the following:
- copy the file "patchw32.dll" from your brother's comp and place it in your main directory, where the Heroes2w.exe file is located also.
- Here you have the patch which upgrades your game to version 1.3
- Keep in mind, a patch usually never upgrades a "downloaded" exe file! Only all other files. Therefor you may need a patched exe file as replacement for your existing file.

If nothing works, try to find Heroes2 gold edition, which contains all needed things, even the great add-on The Price Of Loyality. It is pretty cheap (ebay).
