Poll Question:
masculine and feminine attributes in playing HOMM3

I anticipate that this thread may cause a heated discussion, but remember that all these come from my observations ...
There is a big difference between masculine/feminine and male/female ... and neither one can be considered better than the other.

as for hero preferrences:
the feminine choice:
- Solmyr
- Deemer
- Aislin
- Jeddite / Alamar
- Thant
- Kyrre / Gunnar / Dessa
feminine quote "Solmyr's cute and look, he already comes with a useful spell  "

the masculine choice:
- Crag Hack
- Mephala
- (any barbarian, knight, overlord ... warrior)
masculine quote "Solmyr's a pu$$y, Crag Hack can kick his @$$ anyday ... and I don't NEED a cheap level 4 hero to win!"

feminine tends to prefer magic heroes, while masculine prefer might heroes.

Maps played:
feminine maps:
- any hourglass series
- any criss cross
- never a random map
- any map that takes at least 4 hours just developing your hero, later to have every artifact in the book and 20 to each stat.
it seems that feminine players enjoy more "role playing" maps, and enjoy a fully developed hero over the "tactical" stuff.
feminine quote "It's just not fun when I get beat on week 3 and my hero is not developed"

masculine maps:
- ALL random maps
- desert wars
- battle for honor
- boomerang
- any map where you can meet your opponent before the 2nd month.
masculine players enjoy the "tactical" maps over the "role playing" of main hero development.
masculine quote "Stop wasting my time and BRING IT ON!"

Style of maps preferred:
feminine prefer closed maps.
quote "It's just no fun when you get rushed."
feminine only want rich maps.

masculine prefer open maps.
quote "closed maps are for the insecure! ... and they take too long."
masculine can care less how rich the map is.

factions preferred:
feminine:
- definitely Rampart (because they're cute)
- avoid Necropolis
- Tower (lots of spells)

masculine:
- Stronghold
- Fortress
- Inferno

(Dungeon and Castle seem to be played by both)

I've run into many males and females that fit both these categories (note, the quotes represent those who are the epitome of masculine or feminine)

If you have any other observations, have some constructive criticism, or can give me counter-examples, please present them.  Remember, male does not always equal masculine, and female does not always equal feminine.

do you consider yourself (besides these observations) a:
____________
- wiggy ... who has a crush on Rob's models.  Well ... the ones his age (18-26)

Responses:
masculine player
feminine player
have both here and there

The constructive critism you asked for...

Quote:
- definitely Rampart (because they're cute)
- avoid Necropolis
Please move those to the neutral section. Since when is it girlish to like tolkien/woodland creatures and dislike undead?

LOL

so far I must say that these are entertaining replies

However, you misunderstand some of these concepts of masculinity and femininity:
first off: feminine does not equal girly.
second: if anything possesses a feminine attribute, it CANNOT be said that such is for girls, or girl-like.
In a general sense, feminine ONLY implies that (in a broad sense) more women will prefer such than men.

for example:
After a 40 year expert study, it was revealed that the early 60's Mustangs (cars) possessed feminine attributes because of their curvish design, while the 80's Mustangs possessed masculine attributes by their box-like design.

However you are correct: to choose Rampart solely because of their cuteness is clearly an example of the epitome of feminine, and I should have clarified that.

About Solmyr, blue camel is correct, Solmyr himself is not feminine ... however from my observations, the feminine style of players choose Solmyr.

I only label hg and cc as feminine maps because they have all the attributes of the "role playing", "hero development", closed map design.  <--- because I believe that something IS the sum of all its attributes.

I am actually quite surprised that the only criticism I've had so far were on these topics, I suppose this only shows that I'm on the right track

Remember, all these are only my observations.

Well, as cool as it is starting with chain lightning, I'll take Mr. Hack over Solmyr anyday.

I see some truth to what you are saying from looking at how me and a guy I know played the game compared to a couple girls I've played it with.

But I wouldn't take this too seriously.

And as Lith said, Jenova is hot...

The girls on the backs of the Pegasus aren't detailed enough...

er, not that it matters, uh, since it's just a game, you know, but...

um, nevermind.

Speaking as both feminine and female, ... I *do* prefer magic heroes - but Aislinn?  Thant?  You forgot the 'avoid necropolis' option you mentioned below ... :-)

Four hours for hero development is an exaggeration, surely?  :-)  I don't know what you mean by hour-glass or criss-cross maps.  I *do* know that 'role-playing' and 'story' appeal strongly to a lot of people, myself among them.  I also have a strong preference for one-session maps.  The two do come together occasionally :-)

I do like developing a good hero and a good army.  Many maps become dull at that point, though - you need a well-ramped map to keep the challenge up and make it worth continuing to develop the hero.

Tower is not just good because of the spells.  Tower has three shooty-troops and a no-retaliation melee troop.  (Nagas *rock*!  :-) )  Genies add flavour.  I dislike losing troops - my Tower army is less attackable than my Castle army.  Moreover, when it comes to battles that can only be fought with magic - like taking out 2700 arch-devils using a tower-lineup headed with just 40 titans - the tower lineup is far better suited to it than Castle or Rampart.  Clone all the shooters and the nagas - blind your victim towards the end of each round - yummy!  (the map was 'Orrin's Island')

*Anyone* plays Rampart.  Sure, it's got all the 'nature' vibes.  It's also a strong town in and of itself - lots of hit-points, one powerful shooter, one powerful flier, high speed and good heroes.  (I tend to leave the slowpokes unbought.)  Pity that shooter is so fragile - I really feel a Rampart lineup loses a lot of its punch when the Grand-elves are dead.

thanks for feedback :)

first off: Rogue, you're absolutely right, this stuff isn't important ... I just find it interesting

DragonSister, you are correct that Aislin and Thant are rare among feminine players, however those would be thier first choice for Necropolis.  I was mostly illustrating the powerful "level 3-4" heroes

you're also correct about how both types likes the role-playing, hero development ... but (IMO) the masculine can only take so much.  I think it's still true that the masculine prefers tactical over role-playing.

Tower is personally one of my favorite, so is Rampart.
However the main reason I avoid Rampart is because my gold dragons can be imploded, and NOT resurrected
you're right, anyone plays Rampart (except for motorschaaf), yet from my observations it seems to be a town that feminine plays more than masculine.  <-- these observations could be wrong.
I believe Tower's units are the most powerful, but they're also the most expensive as well.

I admit that I have a lot of feminine attributes in my HOMM3 playing ... for example:
- I prefer closed maps (i dislike being rushed)
- I dislike playing Stronghold and Necropolis, and enjoy Tower and Rampart
- I love the logistic heroes

my favorite towns in order are (not best towns):
1 - fortress
2 - inferno
3 - tower
4 - castle
5 - rampart
6 - dungeon
7 - stronghold
8 - necropolis
9 - conflux  <--- because I HATE having to wait for my pyre just so I can get some decent, cost-effective troops!

Now that is just so much junk it's not funny Wiggy! How many games against girls have you played lately? Obviously not a lot! Masculine and Feminine choices? LMAO!

For one, I prefer serious, hard-arse heroes like Dace. Minotaurs and their brutish 'stomp stomp stomp' on the battlefield is just awesome! No angels for me! If you fly, then you're a waste of my time!

I love random maps. I ONLY play randoms nowadays and I hate closed maps. Closed maps are just races to build your hero up and then attack. Open maps like Battle For Honour are much much better as this is the ideal map of a true strategist and not a mere 'builder gatherer'. I love role playing maps (to a degree, anyone played that god awful Rings map lately?) and I love being able to meet the enemy early. 4 weeks before spying someone is my idea of a boring game. Much better to slip right into it and be at each other's necks for the whole duration of the game, not the last five minutes.

I think that most of your 'feminine' guesses are taken from playing someone like Qu_Purple. Just so you know, Queenie is a damned good player, and going up against her on a closed map with her being Rampart is nothing but an uphill battle for you. You make it sound like women are more interested in playing Ken and Barbie when it comes to a good Heroes game (oh, Solmyr is cute! *flutter flutter*), but I tell you, there are quite a few 'Barbies' out there who'll kick ya right in the proverbials. Oh that's right. I forgot that Ken doesn't have any proverbials at all.

I'm pretty insulted that you think that the choices you listed in your limited ToH experiences are biased towards women being reliant on 4th level Heroes and spells to win a game (which takes them a minimum of a month).

You need to come and play me Wiggy. I'll have you reporting LOSSES at the end of week 1 and send you straight to the bottom of the ToH ladder!

Come on Ken! Come into MY kitchen! Let's see who can stand the heat...

*reads shae's post*

Yeah...

...that's about how I thought she'd respond to this.

I don't think he meant it in an offensive way,  but if I was to make an observation, I'd say that Shae is probably less feminine than the stereotypical female.

(and no, I'm not saying she's totally butch either...)

I...

...well, it's hard to explain, and I should shut up while it's still safe...

...if it's still safe.
