well i guess they just wanted a popular radio album just like Metallica's Black Album and like Judas Priest's British Steel. However: i hope they get back to the style on their previous hits now.

I recently bought Deep Purple's "3 Classic Albums" collection, which I found at a bargain price.  The set came with Fireball, Machine Head, and The Very Best of Deep Purple.  I'm not usually fond of this sort of rock music, but I figured I'd give it a chance (I got tired of all the bogus accusations on Skype).

I've just about finished listening to Fireball, and I'm not exactly impressed.  I was alright with two or maybe three of the seven songs.  This stuff is probably going to have to grow on me.  Still, you're not going to find me dismissing Deep Purple as pathetic emo crap (after all, it's not 2006 anymore).

You better not.

While I agree that Deep Purple is not something anyone could like, they are amongst the fathers of hard rock and should (imo) be given the proper respect for that. My personal favorite album is Machine Head. Out of curiosity, what songs from Fireball did you like?

Well, the three classic Deep Purple Albums are IN ROCK, Fireball and Machine Head.
Deep Purple in Rock is the Classic, there is anice birthday edition featuring Black Night as well, originally not part of the album.
It would make sense to hear that one first, starting with Speed King, going over Child in Time to became an instant classic.

Fireball was made in a rush because after the success of the In Rock album they toured like mad, and it shows - it's not nearly as good as In Rock, but the songs aren't exactly bad either.

Machine Head, then, saw them back to In Rock form. If anything, that album is even better, starting fast with Highway Star, featuring the classic Smoke On the Water and the great Lazy.

Anyway. Listen to Speed King which starts the In Rock album. The furious start is program.

I'd be interested, too, which two songs you liked. TODAY (it changed over time) *I* would name No One Came and Demon's Eye, with Fools and Anyone's Daughter close behind.

Burn and Stormbringer are great albums, no doubt about it. In fact, most of Deep Purple's albums are good in one way or another. But In Rock and Machine Head will be forever considered as the golden era of Deep Purple.
