HOMM 1 or 2 - getting them

Hi all,

My old account name/password won't work so I had to create a new one, so I am sorry about that.  I first posted here probably in about 1998.  Anyways...

I bought the original Heroes of Might and Magic: A Strategic Quest new, and also bought HOMM 2, HOMM 3, HOMM 4 and HOMM 5 all new.  I got HOMM 2: Price of Loyalty, HOMM 3 Complete, HOMM Millenium Edition (1+2+3).  However, I let various people borrow my spares, including letting my older sister borrow my HOMM 1, HOMM 2 and Price of Loyalty CDs (after all, I had the Millenium edition so didn't need them) and she promptly lost them!  Then she insisted that since I gave them to her for a birthday present, therefore that I owed her the Millenium edition.  So I told her she could *borrow* it.  She then promptly lost that too!!!!  I was so angry with her that words cannot speak, because by that stage you could not buy HOMM 1 full stop.

Last week I happened upon HOMM Compendium (1+2+expansion) being sold on E-bay, so I put in a bid, and it went up to $44 before I said no that's enough, as I could get it from Amazon.com for $44, and I was sure that surely I could get HOMM 1 (I really only want HOMM 1) cheaper somehow, since the original price for it on e-bay was $2, and it is quite an old game.

So...

Does anyone have the HOMM 1 CD (and HOMM 2 if they have it) and can burn me a copy?  It's old enough that it shouldn't have copyright protections or anything.  I'll send you money in advance for your troubles.  From memory, HOMM 1 and 2 both work on all later versions of computers, and anyway I have an old Windows 98 computer that I can use.  If I can remember rightly, HOMM 1 works in DOS and there was something tricky about setting up the mouse.

Anyway, if anyone has this and can send me a copy, then please let me know.  Personally, I love the old Purple Dragons, and the clunky graphics.

sigh... people should really learn to use the search function. I mean, (once again) it was posted less than a week ago...

Anyway, look at this thread, and you'll find everything you need to get HOMM1 for free. As for Homm 2, I have no idea.

Enjoy.

P.S. Looks like HoMM 1 is coming back big time, lol.

Hmm, well if you really want to play either of those ancient games, I recommend you have a look at this thread:

Okay thanks!  That was the answer I was hoping for!

I spent hours doing google searches and nothing came up.  You guys are the best!

I hope it works alright.  If not, then I am sure that you guys can help me to get it to work!  Woo hoo!

Ah I so loved HOMM 1.  I used to spend hours and hours playing it.  Of course, once HOMM 2 came out, HOMM 2 was much more difficult, so then I wanted to go back to do HOMM 1 and finish everything (can you believe that I didn't finish all of the HOMM 1 games?)  Peasants were so wonderful then.  It was just so awesome.

I don't have any great desire to play the pre-Heroes 1 game, um, what was that one called?  King's Bounty?  But if anyone has a link to that one, then that'd be good to download too.

So is there any hope for downloading HOMM 2?  Or do I have to buy it?  The cheapest I could find was AU $29.  Is there better than that?  I find it odd cos you can get HOMM 3 complete for $13, yet HOMM 2 is more expensive.

Sniff around abandonia.com some more - with a bit of luck, you should be able to find all of the old games you seek.  A few days ago I downloaded Might and Magic III to help me comprise some of the history of the Might and Magic universe.  Good luck.

Regretfully, HoMM 2 is not on abandonia and I have no idea where to get it.

As for King's Bounty it comes as a bonus in the archive of Windows Version of HoMM 1 from abandonia.
HoMM1 works properly on windows (I installed it myself a few days ago), as for KB - it works on windows, but afaik with no sound or something like that so I you might want to consider downloading DosBox from abandonia as well.

Kings Bounty is here:

http://abandonia.com/games/151/download/KingsBounty.htm

Works perfectly first time I downloaded it.  My HOMM 1 download hasn't finished yet so I can't comment on that one.  King's Bounty was a LOT better than I expected, and seriously if you've never played it before, it really does look like HOMM 0.

Just as a review of King's Bounty for someone who has played it for about 1 hour now, first time around:

You start off right outside a rather obvious gate, enter the gate and you have tons of money to buy troops - enough to buy the whole lot - Archers, Militia and Pikemen.  Militia are weak but Archers and Pikemen are quite strong.  From there you can go out and kill stuff, and you can win a fair few fights with that.  From each fight you get more money, and more ability to kill stuff.

It doesn't seem to have as much strategy as HOMM (even HOMM 1) but its still there, and its easy enough that I could play for several hours on my very first time at the game without any instructions.

Now on to HOMM 2.  Can someone see if they can find a copy of it?  If you have a copy, can you burn me one?  I can pay for it.

Gotta stand up to your sister, man.
I'm sure you'll be able to find HOMM 2 somewhere on Amazon or Ebay. It might just take a bit of waiting until one shows up.

I download Daemon tools and it works on the WinXp, but I can't find one that works on Win98.  Is the one in abandonia good for Win98?

Got the HOMM 1 to work on WinXP quite happily.  Won't work on Win98 cos of the Daemon tools thing.

I thought that Daemon works well on all Windows, but it's been a while since I last used Win98 so I can't be sure.

Actually, I found a really old version of Daemon.  The more recent ones are not compatible with Win98 or below.  The really old version was.  All works fine now.  Got it to work on my old computer.  Woo hoo!

Now, as for HOMM 2...

You can get HOMM2 here:http://www.download-free-games.com/war_game_download/heroes_might_magicII.htm

I downloaded the demo and played it, works fine on my computer w/vista and I didn't need Daemon tools or anything like that.

I did something wrong I think.

I installed daemontools and downloaded the homm1.iso file. When I load the image, I get to the first startup screen of Heroes 1 with the options Play, Install, Editor, and Exit.

When I click Install, it makes a sound, but further nothing happens. When I click Play, Editor or Exit, it makes the same sound and simply exits. The image is still loaded in Daemon Tools, but nothing happens...

Would anyone know what to do ?

(First time using Daemon tools)

That's weird...
I'm not sure what you've missed so I'll just say what needs to be done:

1. Make sure that there is at least 1 virtual cd made by Daemon Tools (DT). To do that right click on the DT icon at the bottom and select "Virtual CD/DVD-ROM" -> Set number of devices... -> 1 drive.

2. Left click on the DT icon at the bottom, then choose the option "Device 0: [*letter*:] No media". Select the "homm1.iso" image and click open.

3. An autostart window should open and you should be able to install the game.

*. If this doesn't help, try repeating steps 1-2, but instead of install using autostart, go to the virtual CD itself in My Computer and use the setup file.

Hope this helps.

I figured it had something to do with a Malware virus I have, I can't delete it since it makes my PC reboot whenever detected and it blocks opening DOS programs... Maybe that's why the install option via Daemon Tools didnt work.

Anyway, I resolved it by starting up in Save mode (So Dos programs DO run), and it installed without a problem. Then I could play it in normal mode, yay!

Dragons are totally overpowered... And I love it.
