Heroes 4 on Vista

Hello!

Being a huge fan of HoMM 3, I recently bought a pack with HoMM 4 and expansions.

I installed it on my computer, a Pentium E2140 with 2Gb RAM and a GF8600GT on Windows Vista Ultimate. I can't make the game work, because I get a Blue Screen of Death when I start the game. Is there any way I can fix this, with patch or anything? Or just give up playing HoMM? =/

Thanks in advance,
Gnitrops

First make old dos floppy disk. Restart and go to Bios select floppy as new safe disk. Open Dos and format C:\ Open dvd disk and install Windows XP and all your problems are wiped away

Seriously i think Vista is good for nothing if you ever try to play some games whit your computer. Or use some USB portals or use any other program other than web browsers (tough even that might lag guite bit )

I have said this before and it gets old but why run Vista when nothing work in it!

Now blaming poor Vista... The same thing was with XP. First all hate it, now all love it. Try run it with compatibility of XPSP2.

If the compatibility mode doesn't work, try installing Microsoft Virtual PC ( http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/virtualpc/default.mspx ) or some other kind of virtual machine, install another Operating System (like Windows XP) and try Heroes IV in your new OS.

I was very sceptical when XP came when NT was complete disaster. XP has worked for me always and therefore i had high hopes for Vista but it failed to impress me. It came out unfinished (mutch like heroes iv )there have been service packs for it already and they will continue improving it so it might be better in the future but atm it's bad.

I have never seen a new game working properly in a virtual machine, so I don't know if that's the right approach for the problem. Unfortunately I can't really help you either, but try updating graphics drivers if you haven't already... actually H4 should work on Vista.

Help!!!

I have the exact same blue crash on starting the game after which my computer restarts. How can I fix this? Virtual machine worked horribly when I tried it with Dune 2000. Vista doesn't usually make trouble for me.

I tried compatibility settings, installed with or without expansions (I have the complete dvd version), restarted comp before playing, adjusted resolution.

I tried installing the old directx with the heroes install, it says it's missing a dll.

For requirements chech, the install fails to acknowledge the OS and doesn't see that my 2GB > 256MB.

I have Radeon X1950 Pro, Intel dual core 2.4 GHz 6600.

This is a serious dissapointment

Give yourself a favor. Buy HoMM5-T.o.t.e.(v.3.0), which in turn, is the newest stand-alone HoMM game for Win. Vista.

I'm surprised that you did not know how HoMM games got so advanced, yet. You will, from now on, have to archive, permanently, HoMM3+expansions and HoMM4+expansions. Unless, you still have your older PC. You could always use your older one for gaming only(do not need the internet for playing those older games).

Truly sorry to bring such a wake up call to you like that but, felt I should step in and, bring you forward to today's world.

Off-Topic: LucP., ]I would have considered this as pure spam. many fans still like HoMM 3 and 4. Personally I like them more than HoMM 5. Someone loves HoMM 4 while others hate it. You seems to hate it, am I right?

Sorry that i can't help any of you. Maybe a compability test will do it?

The previous post of mine is not spam and, is definitely not a wrong statement.

I did like HoMM4's interface and graphical quality. I just did not approve of the sieging battlefield of a city or, on a countryside's battlefield's approach to military conflict(Hero onto battlefield and continuously getting killed and, imprisonned after loss to an enemy city's garrison-not returning in Tavern for rehirability plus, no arrow towers to the Citadel and Castle alike).

You two, get informed. I truly feel ambarrassed by your lack of knowledge onto HoMM5-T.o.t.E.. Especially coming from you, Radar.

Get the game itself, since, it is clearly stated onto the back of the box that it's system requirements start by Windows Vista then, XP and, 2000(only).

BTW: This package of mine came straight from San-Francisco, California's based Ubisoft. Clearly states, in bold, Made in the U.S.A..

Note: It's plastic box's packaging is right of me, as make this very post.

H3-4 Bad? Do you even realise what you are saying?

Both are GOOD games, it's not that you don't like them, than No one is allowed to like them. (I personally prefer TotE, but some still prefer H3. It's not a crime or follishness. It's a fact)

Good day to you

The point is:

Do not bother installing a 5 year old game on a few months old Entertainment System(ES instead of the going out of existence PC).

These days, very old gaming software, ends up not being compatible with the hardware drivers of today's systems. And, even less, of its latest in Operating System(Vista or, Server 2008).

Currently, I do not even know if HoMM6 will ever emerge from development, nor if HoMM5-T.o.t.E. will ever run onto the 64bit platform of rather Vista or Server 2008(Vista 64bit is now being pre-installed onto the latest in Entertainment Systems(ES)'s double core, triple core and, the quadruple core(main computers on the same socket's processor die).

I give about until Spring of 2010 for the quad core systems to reach the bottom of the list of the price list(300$ to 600$). Until then, 128bit hardware platforms will be needed for the 128bit O.S.. A mere, two years, and all of your games will be unplayable.

All of what you are saying Lucj is just false. Hell, I am on XP and can still run DOS games for goodness sake. Vista can also run DOs games. Do you know how old some DOS games are? They are older then 5 years old, some even older then 10 years old. Get some real facts in the future.

Interesting, how could I win the h5 knowledge competition then?

Luc, from that I have read, you advise playing only h5 because it's the only vista compatible heroes game. Surprisingly, I have vista and can run even heroes 2. It's not the matter what is written on the game box lol.

@Radar and William

You two will have to show me how to run these, way too old for me to care, titles of HoMM2 and HoMM3. Since, I had no choice to install the MOD of W.o.G 3.5.8f in order to use HoMM3-Complete(Had to replace main S.o.D. core program in order to be able to install that latest MOD version) onto then title of Windows XP-with no Service Packs yet(2002).

I did not even bother to keep HoMM4:Equilibris v.3.51 installed when, I suddenly decided to upgrade to Win. Vista Home Basic Edition in Spring of 2007 then, Win. Vista Home Premium Edition in Fall of 2007 and, SP1 onto this current O.S. in Spring of this year(SP1). Note:SP2 will be available as of Fall of this year or, Winter 2009. I already was playing HoMM5 Original in 2006 and, HoMM5 H.o.F.v.2.0(no patches were needed for me though) in Spring of 2007(Fully Vista compatible BTW). Then came HoMM5 T.o.t.E(v.3.0)in Fall of 2007 and, played it until, I made the grand mistake of installing SP1 onto my O.S. A lot more updates and upgrades followed(Overall drivers of the machines hardware also). I could not play a single title of HoMM5 since March of this year.

Wow, someone please ban Luc or at least give him a WARNING. I understand his posts are entertaining and hilarious, but he turns every serious technical discussion into a joke, which is confusing for the OP.

Dear Luc, you have absolutely no idea what you're saying. Server 2008?? that's a Server first, not for desktops. Second, I think when you hear about a number, you simply put out rubbish BS and increase the number, thinking it'll be better. Applications are hardly made in 64-bit (games that is), and you say 128-bit BS... There is already so-called 128-bit, but not whole variables, rather a SIMD approach, which of course you have absolutely no clue how it works (just that is sounds cool, right?)

Please just don't promote something because you "find it" sounds "cool". Technical jargon only makes you look like a clown.

h3 runs normally without any tweaking. i even don't need to switch it into compatibility mode.

sorry for the bad Q, i had to enable 16bit colour depth in order to run it in windowed mode

at least you have a proof
