Give yourself a favor. Buy HoMM5-T.o.t.e.(v.3.0), which in turn, is the newest stand-alone HoMM game for Win. Vista.

I'm surprised that you did not know how HoMM games got so advanced, yet. You will, from now on, have to archive, permanently, HoMM3+expansions and HoMM4+expansions. Unless, you still have your older PC. You could always use your older one for gaming only(do not need the internet for playing those older games).

Truly sorry to bring such a wake up call to you like that but, felt I should step in and, bring you forward to today's world.

This is such BULL! Starcraft installs fine and runs with no problems even with version 1.02. How come a much more recent game has trouble? Or is Blizzard's programming universal and 3DO's was not?

As for which game I liked most, it was Heroes 3. It is great and has simplicity, each town has a great and original, unique design.
I liked H4 for its new mechanics, that I think are great and well enough implemented, unfortunately not thought through enough. Good visual designs and music too.
I dislike the art in Heroes 5, its only good part seems to be combining the acclaimed features from H3 and H4, without much imagination I might add!!! What do you say to that other than troll, huh?

I recently bought a laptop (a couple of weeks ago) which came with Windows Vista Home Premium. Being such a recent notebook (it comes already with Centrino 2 platform), the Windows was already updated with Service Pack 1.

I installed Heroes IV without a single problem (although the installer warned me that I had only 2GB of RAM and it was less that the required 256MB, which could lead to a sluggish play... ). I have the complete version distributed by Ubisoft (one DVD with the game and its expansions) and have still to install Equilibris. The vanilla Heroes IV plays like a charm and there's no need to use compatibility mode at all.

Try getting the SP1 in your machine (roughly, a 600MB download and almost an hour to install) and then give Heroes IV another shot.

Any idea if this works?

Edit: I just tried it, but the same blue screen is still appearing...:/ Someone know what I can do?

GET WINE AND STOP COMPLAINING!!!!!!

It did run Heroes 3 more stable than my Vista AND XP ever managed. I guess the same might apply to H4.
And for the note: it also runs Fallout 1 perfectly.

Yupp, it should work. It ran fallout 1 and Heroes 3. I guess H4 would not be to far away.

I'm curious, did anyone here ever get Homm IV working in x64 Vista? A while ago I bought that nice Heroes of Might and Magic Complete box. Heroes V works fine, and I was surprised to see that HOMM 3, 2 and even 1(!) all worked fine on my Vista x64 system, without any special compatibility settings needed.

But HOMM IV gives an instant reboot/blue screen of death no matter what I try. Since all other heroes games work fine, and Vista 32-bit seems unaffected, I'm guessing this is due to some copy protection mess that tries to do something that it shouldn't. I tried some no-cd cracks that often disarm such timebombs left by thoughtful developers, but to no avail so far. Anyone have more success?

I couldn't get it to run in my Vista 64 normally but I was surprised to see it work perfectly fine under a Virtual PC of... XP, was it? My other problem game, Dune 2000, couldn't run under Virtual PC no matter what the emulation. I played though the undead campaign till I got bored.

As with you, HOMM 3 and 5 work fine. My favorite is 3, by far. It's simplicity and appeal. I detest 5 for the modern-day trash game that it is.

Have fun, hope it's not too late a reply for you to make use of.

Determined to make it work.

Alrighty. I used to play Heroes of Might and Magic IV quite a bit. I loved that game. I got HoMM V a little while back and and, frankly, didn't think it was as good as IV.

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit. I keep getting the blue screen of death as well. I have looked into using wine, but wine just does not yet run on windows. I have tried Virtual PC but found that I couldn't actually create a virtual XP opperating system without an actual windows XP install disk. The only thing I have that is even close to an older operating system disk is a RE-install disk for an old dell laptop that I don't have anymore.

I have found a lady that I would really like to play this game with. She has never played it but likes these sorts of games. I would love to be able to play it with her, but unfortunately, I get the Blue Screen of Death.

The no-cd crack does -not- work. (I'm actually using a backup, not a disk.) I have it fully updated. Running it in compatability mode still gets me the Blue Screen of Death. WINE doesn't run on windows, and I don't have any other operating system disks, nor can I afford them. This excludes the Virtual PC option as well.

Is there anyone out there who has defeated the dreaded Blue Screen of Death, and gotten this game working? Anyone who has had the limited resources that I have?

Please Help me! I would really like to be able to play this game again!

There must be a way for you to get XP from somewhere. If a friend doesn't have the disc, try to torrent some. There are torrents. Try XP SP3 (I just saw it). It might work.

It's strange. I came into the forum 3 or 4 times in a year and wrote 2 or 3 posts. That gets someone to say he doesn't like me. My charisma must be taking an extreme turn.

BTW, it's not our fault Microsoft doesn't support old programs. There are unorthodox, illegal, solutions for problems that shouldn't exist, I don't see a problem with that.

I have an original copy of Vista, something none of the people I know would find reasonable !!!

Thanks for the replies, didn't expect that many so fast.

Too bad there doesn't seem to be a quick and easy solution to this, especially since this looks like a copy protection issue. Makes you think about just how much trouble we're going to have playing the DRM-infested games of today 5-10 years from now. And to think Nival originally wanted to plant StarForce in Heroes 5 *shudders*.

Well, if I ever hear of a way to strip Heroes IV of this or make Vista 64 stop bluescreening because of it I'll report back here.
