How to remove backgrounds of custom Portraits and how to remove stuff of Models

This tutorial contains how make parts of Textures or custom Hero Portraits Transparent and it explains how to remove parts of a Model while you're texturing.
By Kronos1000
Part 1: Giving Portraits a transparent background

1.1 What do we need?
1. A texturing program (I use Photoshop CS2 for the tutorial, but  you can also use Gimp or Paintshop Pro I think)
2. The artwork to cut the Portrait from.
3. A dds converter you can use Photoshop's dds plugin wich you can download here.
4. Heroes of Might and Magic V

1.2 Tutorial:
1.2.1 All right, you have everything we need. First of all you need to open your Texturing program and open your image.

Now use your Rectangular Marquee Tool to select a square you want to cut out and copy it. Now go to File - New and be sure your screen matches this:

(Yes I have the English version of Photoshop)

I use 256 by 256 because I have a bigger space to paste (If it's still too small you can use 512 by 512 as well, but I don't reccomend it) Now paste the part of the Image you copied into this square, this probably doesn't fit so you can use the move tool to move your selection, it should look something like this now:

All right if the Channels window isn't on your screen go to Window and select Channels, now press this little button:

Now you have a new Channel select the RGB Channel now and select the background with the Magic Brush Tool, go back to the Alpha Channel and go to Image - Adjustments - Invert now your Image looks like this:

Now go back to the RGB Channel and you'll have to make the background black by selecting it with the Magic Wand Tool and go to Image - Adjustments - Hue/Saturation and set the lightness to -100 now you'll see your background is black. Go to Image - Image Size and set the size to 128 by 128 now Save it as a tga.

Don't forget to select 32 bits. Resize the Image to 64 by 64 and save it again. Use your dds converter or the dds plugin of Photoshop to convert the images into dds's.

1.2.2 This part is done by the Editor you need to assing your images t a Hero or a Creature. So open your Map where the Hero you want to edit is. Select the Hero and press ctrl + space. Press browse a the shared tab take a good look, you can copy the desired shared file to make it work only in your map and not all of them. Go to Face Texture and press browe and create a new file and make sure it matches this screen:http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/8276/tut8sy4.png scrs name is not important.

Do the smae thing for FaceTextureSmall and open the folder where HoMM5 is installed and go to Editor/H5MMods/Mapname/Folder where the texture files are an place the dds files in the same folder and open the xdb files with notepad and replace </DestName> for <DestName href="PictureName.dds"/> you see this is not so hard is it? Save the Map and you're done! And finally a screenshot of the Portrait as you see it has no background!

2.0 This part of the Tutorial explains how to remove specific parts of a model if you are texturing, for example you want to recolour Realag and you want to remove the knives he carries you can use this Tutorial to do that.

2.1 What do we need?
1. A texturing program that can open dds files(I use Photoshop CS2 for the tutorial, but  you can also use Gimp or Paintshop Pro I think)
2. The Textures from the data.pak file or a1-data.pak file.
3. Heroes of Might and Magic V
5. Texturing experience

2.2 Tutorial

2.2.1 All right if you want to do this you allready have texturing experience so I won't explain this too detailed and this works the same way as 1.2 with the Alpha Channel. All rightr extract the textures you want to edit from the pak file and place it at a place of your choice. Open it with your Texturing program and you'll see the textures. Select the part you want to remove with the Lasso Tool or any other selecting way and go to the Alpha Channel (Or create one if these Textures don't have one) as you can see most of this will be white so Invert your selection (Image - Adjustments - Invert) to make it black and if you check out Heroes V you'll see the black parts are not visible so your black stuff is gone.

This is not Moddeling wich is not possible, so you can only remove stuff not add them

This is all you need to do for questions or to report mistakes pleas post here.

Nice tutorial (I apparently missed it when you wrote it - seems I was busy in august...).

I have a follow-up question though:
Since your alpha channel is just black and white, why not just select the white background around the hero (with the magic wand typically), and delete? This will make the background transparent. Save the dds and you're done.

That's also possible, I mostly press invert, but yeah can be done as long as you don't forget to invert the selection since the Alpha Cannel is black if you create it.

I need some help... when I convert my TGA to DDS, the file doesn't display properly in the game. I've tried two different DDS converters (an alone standing one and the photoshop plugin); I've used the default settings and I've played around with the settings, but still it doesn't seem to work.

Obviously I'm doing something wrong... does anyone know what that might be?

Well ther are several different DDS types, the game usually uses DTX 3 for textures to be used on models, for portraits they used TF 8.8.8.8. so that might be your problem.

PS: How's my old tutorial?

The tutorial's great. It's just the DDS conversion part that I can't get figured out... it's probably some stupid mistake that I'll kick myself for when I figure it out.

There's 8.8.8.8 ARGB 32bpp, X.8.8.8 XRGB 32bpp and 8.8.8.8 QWVU 32bpp. I've tried all three of them, but still no luck. The image still appears in the game in the top left corner of the image space.

Hmmm well the one you should be using is this one: "8.8.8.8      ARGB  32 bpp | unsigned" if is still doesn't work there is another problem.

It worked! Thank you I figured out I had Mip Maps enabled for some reason, which is what screwed it up royally. Thanks again.

Heh, wow... yeah, I had to (with the Photoshop DDS plugin) save a texture in every format until I got to that one for it to work.

Custom Portraits for HoMM V Tribes of the East

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew the pathway of doing this for HoMM V Tribes of the East.
" Editor/H5MMods/Mapname/Folder where the texture files are an place the dds files in the same folder and open the xdb files with notepad and replace </DestName> for <DestName href="PictureName.dds"/> "

There is no path like that, there is: Editor/IconCache/AdvMapObjectLink/MapObjects/_(AdvMapObjectLink)/Heroes/**then it has folders with a few heroes in it and a file document of some sort that when I open in notepad its in a code and there are some symbols that I don't even have on my keyboard**

There is no:
/H5MMods/
/Mapname/
or a folder where the texture files are placed (and thus the dds files)

I'm sorry if this is a newb. question, my strengths lie in my art skill as opposed to programming. I can follow a path and directions well enough though.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Found the way to do it by chance. Its much easier now, all you need is one image size 128 x 128 set up as stated above. And when you are in the editor setting up a town you can customize the hero in the town.

-I was wondering, is there a way to find a map that is in turn, to e-mail  turns. (Suppose I should post this question on a new thread.)

Sorry for resurrecting such an old Thread, but I was wondering if it's possible to edit Heroes from the Pool of Heroes from a specific Town, as opposed to creating a new one from scratch for a single Map. Also, is it possible to add more Heroes in-game? Thanks.
