Special days.

Heroes 3 have their "Week of the (insert creature)" events. Since creatures will now appear in mid-week as well as in the beginning of the week, this will perhaps be discontinued. Anyway, I've a few ideas for special days.

Special days are overall like special weeks, but instead details things that happens only during that day. Some of the events also replaces the players' turn that would usually take place on a day. There could be two types of special days.

1. For a creature type. Instead of giving a bonus to production I believe this could improve Morale and Luck values for a particular creature. This could vary from say a +1 to +3 bonus. All creatures of this type would benefit from this bonus. This bonus applies only during this one day.

2. Special days. These would be rare occurring no more than once per month. In some cases the normal action turn actions would be replaced by no actions at all. For some of them it would probably be needed a possibility to disable them in the Map Editor.

Examples.
Earthquake
The land across the realm quakes making it impossible to travel or do constructions. Towns won't produce income and Heroes won't be able to move. For all buildings in all towns there's a 5% chance that the building is ruined. If this happens to a creature building then the un-recruited population is lost.

Market Day
A market across the land is proclaimed. The first thing that happens is that all players get revenues and resources for the turn.

Then players are allowed a certain time to freely exchange resources with each other. They can switch resources any way they want. The following resources can be exchanged: creatures, resources (ore, wood etcetera), gold, and artifacts.

After this barter, there's an auction of three items:
A pile of resources (of random type)
An artifact (this should be a minor/major artifact)
A stack of creatures

There should be a lowest bid acceptable for all the auctions, but it should still be possible to make a bargain.

When this is over, the next day begins. Heroes are not allowed to move during this day. Also you're not allowed to build anything. The Market is the only activity which happens.

Pestilence
Pestilence sweeps the country. All creature stacks are reduced to half of their original sizes. All populations (adventure map and towns) are reduced to half. Each hero has 50% chance to die, and will then need to be resurrected.

During this day of disaster, Heroes can't move, towns don't produce income and you're prohibited from building anything new.

Royal Decree

A traitor has been uncovered by the Royal Court, but before the arrest the traitor escaped with an army of 100 Crusaders. The King has issued a bounty on 10,000 Gold and a title corresponding to Expert Nobility to any Hero who captures the Traitor and brings him to justice. (You need to defeat him in combat to claim the reward.).

The Traitor will appear as a neutral hero in a random map location, or it could be tied to a certain adventure location.

Yes!Good idea!Check this one:
Some kind of Ramadan-Day: a day when a certain kind of creature can't fight - it's their holyday. You could push it further: if the hero is not trained in leadership an amount of, lets say 10% of the stack will desert your army (only if they are neutral, or else you would finally lose the majority of them, and that is not desireable.

How about some revolt, and one of your towns becomes neutral?

Vlad: Ramadan day sounds like a good idea. Likely the creature would refuse to travel and just laze around.

Jenova: Wouldn't revolts be better handled in the Map Editor, changing data for a special town. Or did you mean a general chance for every town to revolt?

RMS: The reason you can't build is that your workers is on the market. It's their day off.

Edited to bring back on top, and added some new special day.

Tax Return
Each player gets 20% revenue on their Gold.

Pirate surge
Each town with a Shipyard will receive 100 Pirates who are available for recruitment.

Flooding
Each town capable of building a shipyard is flooded. All creatures available for Hire vanish and the Hall and Castle structures are downgraded one level in these towns.

Famine
Creatures migrate from the country-side to the cities. All cities automatically upgrade their Hall and castle levels one step (if possible), and all populations increase 25%.

Anybody who have any more ideas???

How about every town will have a unique beneficial weeks:

Harvest week: Increased creature production for haven
Haloween week: Extra creature morale for necropolis
Riot week: Extra creature att/def skill for Asylum
Natural growth week: Increased creature production for preserve
Tournament week: Extra creature morale for Stronghold
Education Week: Extra creature morale for Academy.

These weeks will occur very rarely due to the beneficial factors that could considered cheating...heheh

Why not try the one which is in the Talisman game: Astral Conjunction. It would be something like this if 'converted' to Heroes.

Astral conjuction
All undead/spirits deal double damage.

Under the title of Astral Conjunction you could place several astral events: just as the eclipse would help the necros, something else could help other towns.

If that day afects all towns and creatures it will be random.
If it helps only one town/monster, it should be balanced, or could be modified by certain buildings that the player has, or even better, by game events (visiting a certain temple/statue/fountain/whatever.. will ensure you that one of these days you'll get lucky...

Vlad: Sure you could have different days for different alignments.

Tikky: The special days would have a chance to occur every day, but since that likely would be tiresome the actual number of events could be perhaps 2-3 per weeks. The more powerful events should not happen more than once per month, or it may be unsettling for the scenario.

Dajek: Normally, it would not be a timed event as initially proposed. It's however not a bad idea to make the "Special Days" events configurable like timed events. This way the map maker could make sure that the events are balanced between the different town types and players. When it comes to multi-player maps it's probably a bad idea to make the events times. In singles scenarios or campaigns the idea has some merit.

Archery Tournament

A large archery tournament is held. The price to the winner is the Golden Bow. Any player can send one or more heroes to attend for a fee of 100 Gold per Hero. The computer simulates a contest between the Heroes. The higher skill in Archery, the better the chance is to win the contest.

This idea could be extended to combat over other artifacts, using the relevant Hero skills.

I haven't worked out how Heroes will return after the contest, if they return to a town or to the army they were in when the day started. Returning to the army would cause a problem in some cases since the place they had may be occupied by another stack at the end of the day. One alternative that works is to forbid other activities during the day. That way the hero could always return to the army he/she came from.

The contest idea is good, but there's something I don't like.If the chances to win the contest thus the prize meaning an artifact grow with your skills, it means that the best will be even better and the worse will remain behind. It's really unbalancing for the game. Other criteria must be found.

Vlad, there's nothing that says that the player who has most monsters and the best level hero also have the hero with the highest skill in Archery. Also since the outcome of the contest is somewhat random nothing says that the most skilled hero will win.

Sure, the best Archer in the game is likely to become even better but that's more or less the point with the contest.

If you compare this with RL contests, isn't the one who has most skill most likely to win? Just look at the olympics. If you let for instance somebody who compete in longjump face a fencer in fencing, then it's obvious who have the best chances to win.

Here's another one!

The Archery day is a good idea.
I have an idea too. Maybe it's a bit moderen. How about an Auction day. At this day Heroes would gather and buy or sell artifacts (if they have to much or to little money). Maybe it's a bad idea but i must write it and show it to you anyway to see your opinion!
