The news is quite dissapointing to me too, but I'll hold out hope for now...

As to the topic of this thread, How about a new Secondary Skill: Incantation

Basic: Can cast 1 spell on friendly troops/battle map at game start (max spell level of 2)

Advanced: As basic, but no limit on spell level

Expert: Can cast 2 spells

Master: 3 spells

Thus, if the "magic" heroes are going to get this benifit, then they atleast have to pay for it with a secondary skill slot!

Comments?

Hi, Mordred,

Interesting idea.

Just some questions:
1). can the magic hero do other things after casting spells?
2). for expert and master level, whether the magic hero have to cast the spells in a row or not ?

Keep going for your imagination.

Other Things?  I'm not sure if I understand what you mean, but my answer would be no.  And yes they would all have to be cast before combat actually begins, or they're lost.  Here's the combat procedure:

1. Tactics Phase
2. Incantation Phase
2a. Order, heroes with higer levels of incantation skill go LAST, for heroes that tie...  ties are first broken by hero speed (SLOWER heroes cast FIRST), then by attacker/defender (Defender casts first), then by the slot they inhabit (from top to bottom, just like combat order).  Once all heroes have cast 1 incantation, the heroes that can cast a second then takes turns doing so, then repeat for the third.
2b. When a hero becomes "active" to cast an incantation, a info box pops up saying so "<Hero Name> may cast an incantation"...  you can then choose "OK" and you'll be taken to the spell book OR you can say "Pass" which you will lose the opportunity to cast a spell (if you can cast more than one, you still can cast spells later).
3. When all heroes that can cast incantations have "Passed" or "Cast", then combat begins.

One change that will probally have to be made is how dispel and cure work...   Cure will heal and remove "creature effects" like normal, but when used to dispel spells (and when you use the spell dispel), it is not automatic.  The chance that a spell will be dispelled is 50%+((Dispeller's POWER - Caster's Power)x5%)  Min. chance is dispeler's POWER x 2%.

Hi, Mordred,

I got your pt. It is a well-thought idea.

Just some suggestions:-
1). No damage spells can be cast during incantation phase.
2). Should blind be allowed ??

Otherwise, a master spell caster can destroy his opponent even before combat begins or just blind everything and then torture them, hehehe.....

BTW, would the spells affect the opponent hero? e.g. how about just blind the opponent spell caster in the first round and that's it........

Ah, for the "other things", just ignore it.

Absoulutly NO spells can be cast on an enemy troop.  I mentioned this in a post above it.  Only spells affecting your troops or the battle map are valid, as incantation represents spells cast before you engage the enemy to prepare for battle and to give you an edge.  If you have a spell that affects every troop on the battle map (Mass Dispel for instance), it is still valid but will NOT affect the enemy.

Actually come to think of it...  Battle-Field spells (i.e., Quicksand/Forcefield/etc.) are only valid for the DEFENDER not the attacker.

"Quitting?

Hello, thunderknight.I saw one of your replies in another thread about qutting the game if it turns out to be a copy of AOE.Say I think I share your sentiments.Although I never played that game, the rumours coming these few days are like too much for me to take.No creature upgrades,60 odd creatures to be split among the towns and 6 creatures for each town-Everything seems to be regressing from Heroes3.If the news turn out to be true,I will seriously consider boycotting the game."

LOL this is very funny!!!! You better not buy Heroes 4 then if you hate aoe so much! (without even playing it!!!!)
Since the new layout for the adventure map that you seem to like is the exact same as in AOE. Ive heard not much complaints about this aspect that there taking. Aoe is a superb game with really balanced units and teams i have no problems with them taking a few ideas from this game. This is all they will do there not making it real time (like aoe) or controling villagers(like aoe) or having to gather resources (like aoe)
So for you to want to not buy Heroes4 for using some of aoe ideas then more fool you!

Range

Well now that heroes (supposedly) can move around the battlefield, spells should only be cast in a radius of the spellcasting hero. maybe it could be directly linked to spell power of the hero or basic, adv, exp magic.

This would add another tactic to the game and therefore give more interaction of heroes on the battlefield.

New spell

Well, to add to my prev post, with this system a new spell called "magic channel" (nuthin like familiars) could be used.

Essentially it would be cast upon or by other magic heroes/creatures, giving other spell casters the ability to use their range as well.

Maybe level 2

Heroes IV Boycott ?!?

Every day I see posts from people saying they won't buy Heroes IV if it has this or doesn't have that. Let's be serious. Once the game is on the shelves, that the gaming sites are filled with hints and strategies, and that everyone is talking about their favorite new creature, who will be able to stay away from the game?

I agree with Arachnid: Age of Empires is now a standard in strategy games and it has inspired dozens of games already. We should start to get used to the fact that there will be a little of AOE in the next HOMM.

Hey,what's up people?Everybody seems to be attacking me for the statement I made.Don't get so uptight,it's only a casual comment.I only said I'll consider.Okay,I was too judgemental and objective, maybe even prejudiced. But it was just a trauma for me,if you guys could understand.Basically,I play the game 'cause I like the variety of monsters available and the upgrades.I really don't wish to see such elements diminishing.Guess I'll continuing looking out for news

A little misunderstanding

Hi, all,

Going through some of your messages, it seems that there is a little misunderstanding here.

__________________________________________________________

What my true meaning of quitting is that "I will quit the game if it turns to be a REAL TIME strategic game, like AOE".

Basically, I have no problem with AOE (I don't "hate" it, though I'm not very happy that it makes ancient Chinese too "weak".) I am not a very good player of AOE, but I still manage to defeat the computer opponents in the hardest setting.

I think games like AOE, C&C and warcraft are great. They put great influence in the evoluation of PC gaming. A lot of later RT games "borrow" ideas from them.

I also enjoy playing them. Nevertheless, my true favorite is turn-based strategic games like homm series. Playing RT games and turn-base games are totally different. I don't mind homm4 "borrow" ideas from AOE or any other games if those ideas would make the game more interesting. But to make h4 a RT game is too much for me.
