The Romans adopted the Celtic practices as their own. But in the first century AD, they abandoned any many of the practises of the celts for their own rituals

RMS, take your own advice.

However, Halloween is really of DRUIDIC origin. Most of the customs connected with the day are remnants of ancient "religious" beliefs and celebrations of the New Year, first of the Druids and then of the Romans who conquered them. For the Celtic tribes who followed the religion of the Druids and lived in Wales, Ireland, Scotland, and Britan, Nov. 1 was New Years Day. It was also a joint festival honoring their Sun "god" and "Samhain", the lord of the dead.

Huh?  I don't recall there ever being a god named Samhain in my Celtic mythology book.  Might I ask: is the "god Samhain" Irish or Welsh?  I happen to own a book of primarily Irish mythology (Celtic Myths and Legends, Charles Squire) and nowhere does it say anything about a Samhain, God of the Dead.

It was the Druid's belief that on the eve of this festival, Saman called together the wicked souls that within the past 12 months had been condemned to inhabit the bodies of animals. They were released in the form of ghosts, spirits, witches or elves. Halloween is a rite with pagan, demonic roots. The Celtic people who lived over 2,000 years ago, feared the evening of October 31st more than any other day of the year. It was the eve of the Lord of the Dead. To celebrate, the people built bonfires, wore masks and costumes in order to prepare for the arrival of spirits. Fire rituals and divination were part of their celebration. Pagan priests even offered human and animal sacrifices.

Demonic roots? Human sacrifices? *LMAO*  Methinks you read too much fantasy books and not enough of the actual legends of Samhain/Halloween.  I never saw a thing mentioned about sacrifices of living creatures in my two hours of searching online through pagan and religiously neutral websites (witchvox.com; www.illusions.com/halloween/hallows.htm), with the exception of excerpts of a Chick tract named "The Trick".  Perhaps if you included your source(s), I could lend your view more credence, but until then...

I suggest that those of you who do not necessarily completely know what you're talking about, not to try and look like you do.

Thank you, drive through.

...alright, so I might be totally wrong! So burn me at the stake for being a heretic, why don't you??

...I'm not trying to hide my sources, for I obviously don't know enough about Celtic mythology to hvae this originate from my own mind...I searched through a couple sources, and all of which came from credible sources seemed to agree, so I just picked one. So I was wrong to copy what it said here. How was I to know that they are a bunch of filthy liars? ...I mean they seemed convincing enough...based on my minimal knowledge of it, it appeared right, and when I showed it to one of my friends, he confirmed that what I found was true...if it lends any credence to what I have said, he's ranked amongst the top 5 of my class, and that isn't xactly anything to sneeze at...

...anyway, where I got this from was directly on this page:

http://www.illusions.com/halloween/frampage.htm

...why they would spend so much time, and place so much effort into falsehood such as this, with nothing to gain from is, is beyond me. Wow, it sure seems that they received many responses to what they have on their site, from many people that obviously do not exist. I’m really confused why they spent so much time, thinking up of something so convincing, and then afterward, making up so many different people to support and debate their views, and such…oh well, I guess I’d better not get into a religious debate about any forms of Christianity or anything of the like, because I’m wrong on this…I guess I’d really examine myself fully, before I give out any advice. This is completely my fault.
…my sincerest apologies to all whom I have harmed by this.

actually you are both right...

RMS, dear friend... you should read more carefully... right after the parts you mentioned was the following...

Quote:
The Druids were an 'oral' tradition; they didn't write down their teachings. Unfortunately, most of what we have on them from pre-Christian times was written by their mortal enemies: the Roman Empire. To take what the Romans said about the Druids as fact is rather like taking what the Romans said about Christians as fact. (Athenagoras, in 176 CE, writes a whole tome to repudiate the accusations of atheism, cannibalism and lust directed by the Romans at the Christians).

There are many different opinions on most things relating to history. Perhaps how one "village" celebrated was different to another, how one family interpretted was different to what others though.

Translations can also be misinterpretted.

They may not have been deliberately trying to mislead, only publishing what they thought was the truth.

In this light I felt that your comment was uncalled for as what i had been lead to believe appeared slightly different to what you had read.

Mistakes are made though and people move on

Okay, the heavy-handness of my reply was probably a bit over-the-top. I wasn't offended by your comments, in case you're wondering. I thought that the point you made was grievously wrong and didn't think on how to diplomatically address it.  Doesn't mean I'll take it back or apoligize for it, though.  I like being opinionated. *smile*

I also won't bother to get into the religious discussions either. At least, not in this thread.

EDIT: (just read RMS's new post) Lesson learned: people can be mistaken.  At least you attempted to confirm your results with others, though, which showed forethought on your part.  I didn't even do that.

Hehe, there's no need to apologize. It's quite alright. In fact, I was just hoping you wouldn't be too infuriated by what I said. Well, I have a strong code of ethics and beliefs that I abide by, and I shall stand by them, nearly always, with my feet strongly implanted into the ground. It just seems that here, many people, seeing that I can only be swayed by the strongest of winds, have opted for an easier approach- simpler rushing at me with a sledge and hammer, trying to beat me into the ground, while others come with a hand ax, trying to chop em down

...personally though, I hate getting into religious debates. Nobody how it turns out, all there is, is bitterness, even amongst true, heated debates in the same congregation...

I love Halloween!
I grew up in a cemetary so Halloween is like MY holiday.
My job has always been...different with all the wide varities of people I work with so I usually go all out and blow them away with something unusual.  I decided that for 04, 05, and 06 I would perform with a trifecta of crazy a$$ white people starting with Michael Jackson.
2005 was Willy Wonka (the new Johnny Depp version)
and this year of 2006 I will show up as none other then...
drum roll please...............
