The best solution for this ancient substitution-riddle is rather simple.

I agree completely that making leadership plain reduce morale points would be imbalanced. Everyone knows that. For creeping it would be tremendous, to impose right from the start a -1 or -2 morale penalty on the opponents? That would make this creeping faction even more ridiculously fast.

Besides, the effects would stack with previously mentioned artifacts and abilities to impose devastating morale effects on opponents on a regular basis. Not every opponent can take a -5 morale lightly, especially those who profit little from leadership and choose not to take this skill.

My suggestion for this substitution would be simple and still effective.

Apathy (Leadership for necromancers) - Decreases any morale BONUSES from the opposing army. This talent is NOT going to work if the opponent creatures have NO active morale bonuses (or neutral morale).

Basic: -1 morale   Advanced: -3  Expert: -5 on morale BONUSES

This means neutral morale opponents would not be shred to pieces, while heroes counting on high morale to deliver punishment (empathy/ retribution), would be heavily countered.

I, for once, think this would be quite a balanced and tactical skill choice. And way better than what regular leadership has to offer at the moment.

very nice!
can some one work on a mod for this?

also, how about an ability that allows undeads to receivemorale bonuses when enemy morale is negative, like artificial glory for golems,?

There could just be a perk under ledership to decrease enemy hero morale by half(?) of your hero morale(like might over magic for spellpower). It could require, say, banshee howl and one of leadership perks.

I don't think it should be a straight up morale penalty, but instead make it undo Leadership like Shatter Magic undoes magic, with the potential to push it down to a max of a -1 penalty.  I.e. Expert "Anti-Leadership" vs. Advanced Leadership = -1 penalty, or if they don't have Leadership at all, even Expert "Anti-Leadership"  would give a max of -1 to Morale.

Now, an argument can be made that magic is more powerful and common than Leadership, which sort of makes shatter magic skills a bit more useful than an "Anti-Leadership" skill would be.  To that end It could also undo Luck, but maybe to a lesser extent... like have that part of it not kick in until Advanced or Expert.

Alternatively to all that, we could also just change Leadership to an initiative boost for Undead creatures instead of a Morale boost (where living troops would be more eager to act, the necromancer can direct his thralls more efficiently), but make it slightly less than whatever good morale from Leadership would average out to since it would be more of a constant.

In any case, I like the anti-empathy idea where enemy morale failures push the necromancer farther up the bar.

Actually Ledership is a good skill to have for just about any faction.  Sure it isn't absolutely needed, because arties can really drive it up..but it isn't useless either.  So..an 'anti-leadership' being like shatter .. would work well.
