Stronghold's Starting Heroes

I have began playing the orc faction for a few days now and the more I play it the more enjoyable it becomes. Many reasons:

The concept of blood rage is just fun A fine line between simplicity and tactical creativity.
Like the blood rage bonuses/penalties that you must know and plan ahead. The fact that they are affected by spells, killed allies and most abilities makes it so much interesting. Smart tactics for barbarians who'd have thought?
Early battles are fun with the goblins running around when hit!
But there is also a good balance about it. They are fair and square, no abuses, not chance dependent but not weak in earlygame either.
Very good animations. The shaman casting and goblin devouring is just great!

And of course the fact that there are so many good heroes. Not one of them is useless something that I really appreciate.

I won't get into the whole skillwheel combinations, just a general review of the heroes, their earlygame potential and a few hints. So far I have played some games with the town starting at lvl 2 with different heroes to test how they play.

Kragh the Pounder

My favourite so far. He gets a free melee attack in the beginning of each combat and gets a 5% bonus to his attacks. You may say so what? Excruciating strike is 4 lvls away and although its chance to trigger is reduced to 30% it now affects normal melee attacks too. And the free hit may be double which hurts some levels later But everything works as a synergy to him. Powerful blow on the centaurs means he will get two attacks per round(one normal, one from the mark on the centaurs) both reducing enemy initiative due to stunning blow. Oh and his starting battle frenzy is a must for creeping as it doubles your goblins damage output. These are enough for creeping so he can choose pretty much everything he wants. My general picks include leadership->battle elation, triple ballista, logistics. Retribution is pretty appealing for sizeable maps.

Urghat the Tracker

Not much to say, she's swift in navigating the terrain Warpath is a must and battle frenzy is easy to get early so you are fine with creeping. I have found out that with just goblin trappers and centaurs I have easy first 2 weeks of creeping. At least against haven, inferno and stronghold neutrals Ranged units and fast melee can be a concern though.

Garuna the Blood Drinker

Each stack she kills gives a bonus to attack, +1 per 6 levels which is not too shabby! Archery will help with your earlygame considering that centaurs get a +6 attack at the first rage level. She basically has two choices: Go for retribution which will be of great use later or take flaming arrows that work even without warmachines. You should get offered them soon anyway and a triple flaming ballista with a 60% bonus from your stats(50% attack, 10% knowledge) is to be feared. That's the only other thing that rivals Kragh's combo as far as I'm concerned and even better while the game is still early. She can handle ranged creeps pretty fine something that most barbarians lack.

Gorshak the Blade of the Khan

A pretty adaptable hero with an outstanding special. Let's face it, slayers are the backbone of the stronghold army - as long as they survive they can cleave Powerful blow and advanced rage means that you can get right away memory of our blood a must for early, especially vs shooters since it drains a pert of the damage done to you but also because you get to lvl 1 rage easier. Then you are free to pick your preferred skills. Also he can learn lvl 2 warcries fast starting with advanced rage though I prefer to wait, they cost 3k gold and some rare resources needed elsewhere. Though fear my roar by week 2 is awesome

Shak'Karukat the Wyvern Tamer

This hero has a few flaws. First of all just look at his name, everybody will remember him as the wyvern guy Also while vitality is good starting with attack makes your life easier. Your racial depends on you dealing damage and killing stacks, you don't want to drag a battle even for one more round. That said defense is good for barbarians it just does not help much with creeping other than saving some centaurs. Goblins have more losses if they don't kill stacks fast because one hit may send you near another enemy stack ready to strike As for the +2 hp to wyverns per level mmm That way they are decent and won't die as fast Defend us all seems a good ability if you can wait until you have enough orc warriors in your ranks.
(You get +2 defense and double the warrior's number in goblins.

Haggash the Centaur Commander

At first I was doubtful about her but she is a very good hero. I used to see my centaurs die easy to archers and large squire stacks Centaurs are very frail units and I don't upg them early because they require mercury which is really in demand both for dwellings and slave market. Memory of our blood already gives them some rage to shrug off the first blow but their boosted numbers and slightly higher initiative means they can kill weaker stacks with one shot to gain more rage. Very good vs lots of archers/marksmen for this reason. And my favourite skill attack

Telsek the Fist of the Khan

I will admit that I do not particularly like him but he has his uses. For one he starts with warmachines so easy triple ballista. Easier creeping and with might over magic he could aim for some shatter skills to become the bane of spellcasters Not my cup of tea but warmachines/flaming arrows and two shatter skills can be devastating. I just find that other racial abilities serve you better early and I don't even buy warriors for creeping. At least in numbers they are pretty damaging so with specialization they should be pretty decent.

Kilghan the Goblin King

I know what you are thinking and no he does not start with many goblins But he does have an ammo cart, probably as a wink for the goblin support ability(+1 goblin per day if you have ammo cart). His special gives him bonus goblins each week(as many as your level) and reduces the chance they'll betray you No att/def bonuses but I can live with that. What is good for him though is the easy battle elation and aura of swiftness both very good for orcs. Leadership will help your early battles but you need something more than that for good creeping. Very good hero all in all, later he'll be getting hordes of goblins

Wonder what you guys have found out so far. Any thoughts on my approach?

Nice overview Elvin What i have studied the Barbs they do have pretty good heroes (not the Deleb kind of goodies but nice )

My favorite heroes are Gorshak and Kragh they seem to be best on paper anyway. Good early and end game heroes. I also like Telsek and Urghat but i dislike their specials! War Machines and Ballista sure are nice but Telsek should also make Warrior's bit better (Assault/Taunt triggering more often or +1 health every sixth lv) Urghat aren't that bad really i just compare her logistic boost to Rutger and Groks when it feels bit unfair but hey it's pretty alright if you start on snowy terrain Just checked it out all log heroes can obtain Warpatch. Wicked

3 of my most likable heroes Pounder, Tracker and Blade Master (Hey that's me)

Hmm I actually really like the pounder guy since I like the idea of a free strike very much... would be even nicer if you could allready use your Powerful Blow ability. I haven't played that much yet (had to study for tests....) but yeah the Blade of the Khan guy is quite obviously good as Executioners are great so there is nothing bad with makeing them even better. The only problem that really boaders me uptil now is that I haven't found a effecient enough way to creep without flaming arrows...it blocks retribution which is a skill that I consider very usefull for the orcs. You'd most probably allways want Battel Elation and Aura Of Swiftness or Divine Gudiance.

You got me Attack, leadership and warmachines have a lot to offer.

And no, the town in that scenario starts at a high level for me to check creeping accurately. I found a modified map somewhere but I forget.

Wow... Please tell me what it is you consider good about Pao Kais I find them to be a very poor unit. As I said somewhere before they do absolutely ZERO dmg when you have >2 targets! It's like they have a worked in WoL or CotN spell oO. If they would change their ability to work like the Thanes... prehaps then they'd be nice but now? Nooo way.

Possible +7 whit Goblin Support, +3 whit Recruitment and +21 whit level bonus. Add to that very last perk you take is Defend Us All and you have pretty good amount of Goblins

^ True. I just fish they would change that perk somehow or at least make it not required for so many good perks behind it. No biggie tough.

In theory you could have those little baggers in very high numbers. If you have external Goblin dwelling you can get over 100 Goblins in a week easily whit Goblin King Base growth +25, Castle +25, +6 Garbage Pile, +25 Dwelling, +1 External Buildings, +3 Recruitment, +7 Goblin Support, +9lv Bonus = 101 Goblins. That wouldn't be bad for secondary hero but thats just theory.

Coupled with expert defense, vitality and the already high defense of the barbarian they should be ok Actually I did not test if the description is right and it indeed gives 2hp per level - if it is I'm pretty satisfied

You seem to always want to argue with me but it's ok...I like the spirit ! Well I like the +2 HP bonus first of all! And the thing that I like about the paokays isn't their atack (there's plenty of orchish units to deal the damage) but their ability to eat corpses..I'm not so fond of losing units so that's why I like them .
