Four years of HC

I have been at HC for a little over four years. Four years and four days, to be exact. A year ago I made the thread "Three Years of HC". In it, I said that HC was dead. IMO, back then, it was. Now, thankfully, with ToTE coming out and all of the good discussion in the Other Side, it seems to be quite lively. Fortunately. But a wise member once said that HC has cycles. So it does. Right now it is doing quite well, but it wasn't always this way.

Anyway, most of you are noobs compared to me. I can count the people that are active now who joined before me on my fingers. Even most of the mods are noobs compared to me. Ah, well. So it passes.

Back in my day, we had to use the old buggy IM system. We didn't have your shiny HCMs or whatever you call them.
Back in my day, we had no Namice, triangles, or boogers.
Back in my day, the best April Fools joke wasn't organized by the mods.
Back in my day, every post in the Other Side was at least three pages long.
Back in my day, we had no emo exterminators. We had no emos, for that matter.
Back in my day, the Glorious Legend of Let's Have War was HC's Crown Jewel.
Back in my day, we sent TUM packing. He's probably in some long-term care facility, suffering from... diseases.
Back in my day, we had to work to become mods.
Back in my day, the VW was in the VW, and Tavern was in Tavern. You don't mix your candy bars with your steak, do you? Knowing you whippersnappers, you probably do.

Why are you even here, kids? Go play outside, or go back to TheirSpace, or whatever Pokemon is popular now.

I seriously doubt that.

I don't think we could be noobs compared to you.

I have seen some very cool members here that have joined in the last year, who I wouldn't classify as noobs compared to you.

Anyway, cool to see old members still posting, although I have only been here for a year and a few months.

Yea, my four year anniversary is in a couple weeks also. Has it really been that long? That's almost hard to believe. At the time I thought the people who had been around a couple years were really really old veteran members. I guess I still look at them as the people who started HC and molded it into something with the character that attracted so many people. It's changed in many ways since then, but the core is still there.

Back in my day....

home computers weren't invented yet. So kids actually did things like go outside and play sports, or climb trees, or ride bicycles, or play doctor with the girl next door. Sure we did things inside sometimes, but most of the time we were outside running around doing something. Rain didn't stop us, that was just an excuse to splash around in the creek. Snow didn't stop us, that was just an excuse to have snowball fights or go sledding. Homework didn't stop us because society didn't have this ridiculous idea that kids needed to learn calculus at the youngest possible age. Parents knew that letting kids be kids and turning them loose in that great science lab called the outdoors was the best classroom there is. And most importantly, ADHD and Ritalin weren't invented yet because of all the above.

There's a lot of kids in my neighborhood, but I never see them. Where the heck are they? They are probably sitting inside somewhere becoming very unhealthy because they never get any exorcise or breath fresh air.

Oh wait, that's not what this thread is about. Nevermind.

Of course there was homework, I just never bothered to do it. During 12 years of school I almost NEVER brought home a book. I always thought that parents who made their kids do homework were really cruel

Once and for all, I don't believe in Namus. In my old age, I have realized the truth.

You're a noob, how can you be a mod? You're underage, you can't drink that! Back in my day, kids would actually hide to drink illegaly, not do it in public.

Indeed. Though you have not been around for as long as I have, you have still seen the Golden Age.

The core is still there? Maybe a small shard of the core. Hardly the whole core. Yes, most of the True Elders are no longer with us. Alas, age claims them.

Bah, Romana is a noob! The real vets are from March 01

And Mvass must have a lot of fingers because I bet he can't even count the still active members from March 01 on them. (although a lot of oldtimers post in TOH only)

The general pattern is that people join in waves, maybe because a new game came out or they just happened to join around the same time. Very often people who join around the same time get to know each other in one forum. Then they move as a group to the discussion boards. First one or two from the group post, then all the people who know them follow.

And in every wave, there are some who stick around, but most don't. It's also very common for people to post a LOT, like several hundred or even a thousand posts within 6 months or a year, then disappear.
