Well maybe I will give ToE a chance then.

It's interesting, since I've installed HoF I can't even get vanilla to run properly.  HoF crashes when starting most of the battles and vanilla now gets all buggy for most of the battles too, usually showing only a gray screen and only creature stack numbers.  It's not too fun playing blind.  Maybe I'll have to try a clean install...

Sounds like a directx issue.  Also what are your system specs?  Nvidia card?  The reason I ask is because there are some tweaks in the config files to fix graphic glitches with Nvidia cards.

That would be so awesome if you could help out with some tweaks to make it run better!  I suspected my video card was part of the problem since it isn't on the list of supported cards.  I've spent hours trying to search this forum and Google for some sort of fix and it amazes me how little I can find about this game online.  I'm not sure if it's my fault or a lack of English websites.  

I have:
AMD64 3200 2.01ghz
NVIDIA GeForce 6200 256MB
2 GB RAM
Windows XP SP3

The drivers are all updated, so is Direct X.

That was for HV original, I didn't check HoF but I bet it's the same line. Will someone let me know if it works?

edit: the place where you change it is mydocuments/mygames/profilename/usera2.cfg

This line still exists in my H5 Tribes.  Maybe that will work?

Thank you for your help.  I tried your suggestions and they didn't help, but I did find the Heroes 5 Tweaker program.  The game now runs very fast after I made a bunch of tweaks, but still no luck in solving the two problems that make the games basically unplayable.  Here's what I've learned:

Heroes V
-I only get a gray screen with creature stack numbers and the user interface during certain battles.
-No combination of graphics settings seem to work.
-Half of the underground battles occur in a gray-green area with white statues and green trees.  Doesn't look like underground to me.  This area has graphics problems with the ground because some of the textures on the ground are transparent.
-When I start the battle this comes up in the console three times:  "TerrainInfo: Invalid layer detected, no tile info"
-The problem didn't occur before I installed Hammers of Fate.

Hammers of Fate:
-The crash occurs before the game can auto save before battles.
-The game crashes with quick combat enabled.
-The crashes happen every time with specific creature stacks on the map.
-Restarting a map causes different stacks to cause the crash.
-I've tested it on very large with underground and large without underground maps.
-The crashes don't seem creature specific (One stack of Golems will cause the crash and another won't)
-The crashes don't seem town specific (I've tested Acadamey, Fortress, and Inferno)
-The crashes don't seem hero specific.  (I've tested two heroes for each town)
-The crashes don't seem terrain specific (I've tested grass, and underground terrains)
-The debug console dumped four lines of this into the colsole.txt when it crashed:  "TerrainInfo: Invalid layer detected, no tile info"

I've found the problem is directly related to what arena the battle is taking place in.  I will say more in the HOF thread because it's a more relevant thread.

TOE Ignores Quick Combat Option

Hi. I'm hoping someone can answer my question. I introduced myself in the approppriate forum. The bottom line is I have played all the HOMM games and Expansions, since HOMM I.

What's troubling me is the HOMM V series, which I am playing now. HOMM V was fine, but I had the problem a few times first with HOF and now many times with TOE, which is what I'm currently playing. I am playing the scenarios right now and haven't started the campaign or random generated maps yet.

Here is the problem. I don't like to do manual battles anymore because they take way too long, so in the Game Options, I select Quick Combat. I get the results of the combat in a second or two and then move on. But a few times in HOF and now many, many times in TOE, in the scenarios, when there is a combat, it takes me to the combat screen, instead of just giving me the results of the combat. This is so annoying. Then I set it for Auto-Combat anyway and sit there, sometimes for 10 minutes, and just wait for the result, instead of getting the result in one second.

Is this a bug in the program that it sometimes ignores my Quick Combat setting. For the smaller battles, it does Quick Combat, but for a major battle, usually when it has something to do with the Objectives, it always goes to the Combat Screen.

If it's not a bug, did the designers have the nerve to try to tell people how to have fun? Are they purposely ignoring the Quick Combat setting and forcing people to engage in battles that they want them to? I hope not. Plus, they're not forcing me to do manual battle, because I use Auto-Combat on the screen anyway. So why force me to sit there for 10 minutes to watch the boring battle, instead of just giving me the results in one second, which is what I want.

Sorry for this long message, but I'm so upset right now. I just finished the Battle Cry Freedom scenario and love the new Barbarian faction, but it took hours to complete, simply because it didn't use my Quick Combat setting for all the major battles. I would estimate that having to watch all the battles play out added well over an hour to the game.

So the bottom line is does anyone know why TOE sometimes ignores my Quick Combat option setting and forces me to go to the Combat Screen?

Well I do know that there is an option to not allow auto combat in the map editor.  I imagine the game designers thought it would make the story more dynamic or something.

Exactly! I think that's the problem. The game designers are trying to tell me how to have fun. I'll decide what I think is fun. Many times with the game, I feel that the designers are trying to lead me by the nose to do things their way. That's not how it's supposed to work.

The original game designers did it much better. Let's examine all the evidence. In Homm V, there are no built-in cheat codes and cheat console, as there are for virtually every other game, because they don't want you to cheat. You have to go through this convoluted editing of two script files to even get the cheat console to come up. Then after it comes up and you type, "enable_cheats," it tells you that, "Cheating is the way to not get the most enjoyment from the game." Get outta here! Who are you to tell me how to get the most enjoyment from the game?

Then the cheat codes are complex because you're actually editing the script. When a code needs the name of a hero, many times the name you have to use is not the hero's name in the game you're playing, so you have to look the name up on a chart. How elegant.

Now, in TOE they have added this annoying talking, which is bad enough. But it won't let you click on anything until after the talking has finished, so you're forced to listen to this annoying talking before you can proceed. To make matters worse, they have added something back, which they previously eliminated. If you recall, in the earlier games, messages would come up sometimes, when you went over a certain tile. They got rid of that in HOMM V and HOF, which was a good thing. Now they brought those annoying messages back in TOE.

I think the designers are making the basic novice mistake of being more concerned with the fun they are having in designing a mission, than with the user's fun, when playing the mission.

Thanks, fulano, but I want to be clear about one thing. Auto-Combat is what you can use on the Combat Screen to have the computer control the battle for you.

Quick Combat is a Game Option you select in Options, which decides the reult of the battle on the Adventure Screen, without ever going to the Combat Screen.

I always have Quick Combat selected. So even when the game incorrectly goes to the Combat Screen, I am still able to use Auto-Combat in that screen.

So it doesn't appear that Auto-Combat is disabled, but that Quick Combat is disabled. Do you know if the Map Editor allows you to disable Quick Combat as opposed to Auto Combat?

That particular data is stored in the map file itself.  I don't know if a mod can be made for that or not.  I also don't know of a mod, but I also haven't been here as long as many of the regulars.

It's not too difficult to make a mod removing the forced combat, if you can pinpoint which maps the encounters happen in, and in which battles.

No promises, but if you could gather this data I can mod it for you.

I've never used quick combat because to me the combat is the most interesting part of the game.  I'm a fan of chess type games and such.
