Packaging H5 original campaigns for ToE

Moderator's note: I've gathered some text from the original thread to have all the subject in one place. Thread title updated to better emphasize this thread objective.

----------------------------------

Yeah, about this time last year, when HoF was out, I found a post which showed how to increase map editor functionality. I was able to use the new functions to find the campaigns in HoF and make a new campaigns.pak that would let me play the original campaigns in HoF.

If I can figure out how to find that info, I can play Original and HoF campaigns in TotE.

----------------------------------

I got my bearings from my last post. I have my original mod uploaded and you can download it from

- obsolete url removed -

It lets you play the original 6 campaigns in HoF, thus getting you the benefits of things like caravans and such. Here's the problem:

I throw the mod in TotE and the campaign selection screen is blank.

I'm lost now. I'd like some help figuring out how to get this mod to work in TotE, which would allow me to throw the HoF campaigns in TotE. Then, I really wouldn't need HoF or HoMMV at all.

Is HoF accessing some sort of shared resource with HoMMV, and since TotE is stand alone, it isn't?

Again, pm me or reply if you can help me figure this out.

I'll upload the working version once I have one.

Jon

I'm updating the link. I've fixed the campaign names not showing up

Now the problem lies in this error:

map is corrupt or missing

It occurs whenever I go to start a mission in a campaign

here's the link for the new campaign mod

- obsolete url removed -

I really need some help here. I'm quickly reaching my casual modding limit. Could someone with real skill please test this for me?

Thx!!!

Jon

Lord_Evil, I don't see how adding a mod could force you to reinstall: just deleting the mod should bring you back to normal.

I edited your post this time. Please be careful: if you're mad for some reason, cool down first and post your comment later.

@uncreative:
the error comes from the campaigns files (Campaigns/C1.xdb, ...) that still use the old format. It's really a small thing: each mission file is referenced with a <MissionMap> item:
<MissionMap href="/Maps/Scenario/C1M3/C1M3.xdb#xpointer(/AdvMapDesc)"/>
while it should be a <MissionTag> item:
<MissionTag href="/Maps/Scenario/C1M3/map-tag.xdb#xpointer(/AdvMapDescTag)"/>

Of course, the map-tag should exist in the map folder. Luckily, HoF data.pak contains the map-tags for H5 campaigns, so you can take them from there. Actually, you should use the maps from HoF, as some have been fixed in there.

Another thing you should do is update all the files modified dates, to be sure there's no conflict. I assume you did this on files that appear in ToE already, but better be sure.

The maps folder are also missing their texts files (found in texts.pak). I think when the mod is ready, it will be better to package the mod without texts (and fonts), and package those in a separate file, one for each language. While working on it though, you might want to include them. Note that I had problems with the fonts (on the maps subtitles), which I fixed by removing the fonts from the mod.

maps/ and scenario/ folders should be Maps/ and Scenario/

Finally (for now), doing all this, I was able to successfully launch the first 2 missions. The cutscenes and dialogscenes did not work, however (but I could Skip them harmlessly). Maybe the missing sound files are the problem, I didn't look into it.

I gave you my email by PM. Contact me directly so we can discuss some more.

I admit this goes a bit beyond my current understanding of the game mechanics, but I am curious if you guys can work this out. I for one wouldn't mind working through the campaigns using the TotE options and features . Good luck on getting it all worked out!

I've removed the url in the first posts, as they are a work in progress and not supposed to be used yet. The mod is almost finished anyway so the new files should be available soon.

---
Edit: The mod will be released when we squashed all the bugs (which takes time, as the map coding wasn't designed to be exported), and worked with Ubi so that we reach the required quality.

If you want to contribute, IM me or uncreative.

Even if it's not needed for this project (but it is tightly related), if you already used the campaign editor, or better, tried to manually create/edit a user campaign, then maybe you can share some experience. There's one specific thing that I couldn't get to work yet: chaining two campaigns (with heroes carrying over). It's easy to chain 2 maps (the first has to be done to unlock the next one), and have heroes carry over inside one campaign. But not cross-campaign. Maybe you noticed that in the campaign editor, when specifying a carry-over hero, you "can" choose the destination campaign and mission. But you actually can't, since only the current campaign can be chosen.

Again, this is a related topic on which I'd like some input, but it's not needed for this project.
