Lord Woock's Happy Fun Hour
Okay, so I didn't really know what to call this thread, mainly because I still don't really know what to put here. Oh well, I guess the best way is to just have fun and see what I end up with.
Speaking of fun... Music is fun!
And speaking of music, I have to say that I have been recently surprised greatly.
While visiting this huge electronics and media store to acquire a new mobile phone (which I didn't really want, but I don't really regret it now, seeing how I didn't even have to pay for it), I decided to take my chance at having some FUN. So I went to the music section and looked around.
Habitually, I browsed through the Queen records. What am I thinking? It's not like Freddie's going to walk up to Brian, Roger and John one day and suggest getting together again for one last album. So then, as usual, I go and look for some solo works by Roger Taylor and Brian May. Nada. So I look around for nothing in particular. And I am shocked by the prices there, which are just absurdly high.
And then I amble into the jazz section.
Why is jazz so damn cheap, compared to every other genre?
Not that I don't like it that way. I love me some good jazz.
And this is the story of how I bought two CDs of Louis Armstrong for two thirds the price of a single CD of whatever the hell is popular these days.

I think it's great that jazz records are so cheap. I think the same applies for old country records. I think the main reason for this is the age of the music. Since most of the stuff in there is more than 30 years old, they are so beyond the tv era that they have no way to reach a wider audience (trough the traditional means of mtv). Thus, jazz remains the exclusive domain of those who know. This translates in the fact that nobody will buy the records so the companies have at least to keep the prices low in order to attract customers.
So altough a jazz cd is generally worth more than 10 with the kind of crap people listen to these days, it's a lot cheaper.

You know what's really amusing?
Programming.
More specifically, a certain Polish programming community. In theory, it's about programming in general, but everyone mostly deals with Game Maker by Mark Overmars. It's a really good application, as it is fairly easy to use, while still offering lots of possibilities. It is both a good learning tool and a decent toy for someone with some experience in the subject. The games you make don't run nearly as efficient as they possibly could, but that's rarely a problem.
Now, what's so amusing is that over the years, the average age on that forum has dropped to about 13.
The result?
1. The same, incredibly simple questions get asked over and over again
2. Said questions are increasingly difficult to understand
3. The newcomers flood the forum with crappy games which are actually slightly modified examples
4. Said newcomers whine when someone judges their "work" apropriately
5. Spam, spam, spam, spam, LOVELY SPAAAAAM
Now, these are all annoying, but what saddens me is that although I'm sort of like a co-founder of the community, there isn't really anything on-topic for me to do. I'm a sub-par programmer and I don't really do graphics. Sure, I believe I'm fairly good at game design, but the problem is, there is no need for a designer. The few that actually have the skill and patience to do something worthwhile work alone, while the silly kiddies are perfectly happy with another mario clone or thoughtless, boring shooter. Specialising thinkers are doomed to extinction.
I'll make sure to say hi to Darwin when I'm there.

So I'm having my end of school exams this year.
Includes a written and spoken test in my foreign language of choice, on a basic or extended level, another subject's (again, my choice) written test on a basic or extended level and anything else I feel like on extended only.
But more importantly, there's Polish.
This consists of a written test (essay + reading comprehension), as well as an oral presentation.
My chosen topic is a comparison between literary work and its film adaptation.
Naturally, I chose Dune.
For this purpose, I ordered both Lynch's and Harrison's on DVD. Lynch's just came in the mail today.
Flashback to... dun remember. Several years. Just before my registration at HC I think.
I've first read Dune and greatly enjoyed it. And then, I saw Lynch's interpretation. I have never before (or since for that matter) described so graphically what should be done to the director.
Now, I don't want to spoil the story, since a good part of you probably haven't read the book, so I'll try not to give away too much. I still want to say what I found to be the most disastrous parts.
- The weirding way. According to the book, what the Fremen called "the weirding way" is a martial art based on prana bindu training. Complete control of one's body. Not. Flinging. Bloody. FIREBALLS
- Baron Harkonnen. In the book, he's a sadistic, scheming bastard. Well, no. Master Lynch says Baron Harkonnen is a blabbering psychopath who drinks the blood of personally slaughtered slaves. Yeth, marthter!
- Baron Harkonnen's suspensors. According to the book, he needs them to be able to move at all, what with his gruesome obesity. Not enable flight.
- Ornithopters. Come on, even Wikipedia says that ornithopters are contraptions that fly by flapping wings! Not, as Master Lynch commands, ordinary airplanes.
...back to 7th November 2007. I'm going to watch this one more time today. I expect I'll enjoy the laugh. An evil, mocking laugh, but a laugh nonetheless.
