the loading times are long and effective.

What does that mean?
Simply: the players find the loading times in Heroes 5 very long, and it affects them (annoys them,  exhaust them, makes the game even slower...)

Indeed, there were times I wanted to find the nearest wall and bang my head against it do to that.  Enough(t) to drive a person crazy.  I have noticed some long times still, but at least it seems a bit better.

((Note : My appologies for bringing up one of the most annoying bugs they had.  At least it was fixed a long time ago.))

Oh, I see. You made a mistake. It doesn't effect them, it affects them. So the loading times wouldn't be effective (that would mean that they are successful).

Sorry. Fixed that.

1. Variety of Towns

Score: 9  While it is always nice to hve lots of options, it never is good to sacrifice distinciveness for numbers. The oly reason why I would care to see any more towns added is if they could be genuinely new, and that would be difficult to pull off. It might be nice to see a more creature oriented town though.

2. Variety of Creatures
Score: 9  Only lacking in more neutral creatures. Otherwise the existing creatures are quite nice.

3. Design and Graphics
Score: 9  Only real complaint here is that the in-battle hero graphics should be unique for each hero.

4. Balance
Score: 7  This is a lot better balanced game than Heroes 3 and 4, the only prior installments I have played. I think that the factions should be better balanced between might and magic for all stages of the game though.

5. Enjoyment
Score: 7  I like this version of Heroes a good bit. The real negatives are that the poor Random Map Generator and the extremely poor performance of the game with the larger maps proves a huge drawback.

6. Upgrades System
Score: 8  I very much like the option to have better unit options depending upon the situation, and the ability to switch between upgrades. The only reason I didn't give this a 10 is because I think that some of the upgrades are clearly superior almost all the time, given what the faction's strategies need to be.

7. Campaigns and Storyline
Score: 7  None of the campaigns had that kind of 'epic' feel that I loved about the Baldur's Gate series. However, this IS a strategy wargame, and frankly there isn't much room for anything like true character development. Since the focus is on the fighting, I really didn't expect too much here. What we got was entertaining enough, and I sure wouldn't want the regular gameplay to get the shaft if more resources were spent improving this area.

8. Singleplayer Missions
Score: 4  With so few single player maps, the RMG needed to be really good and it is pretty poor compared to the earlier versions in the series. I played Heroes 3 for years and never really got tired of it because of the good RMG. The current RMG is too preditable, and needs more customization options to ensure the presence of map features that you want to be there. It also needs to not lay breadcrumb trails leading directly to the other player's castles. That makes it too easy to just follow the roads to rush other players. Also, saying that the AI for computer players is horrible is being nice. The competence could at least scale depending upon your difficulty settings so that at higher difficulty the AI would pose a challenge.

9. Multiplayer Options
Score: n/a  I have not really tried multiplayer because my roomie is scared to play me, and I have not really been available much during the evenings. I have tried the online duels, and got the impression that the dueling armies are poorly balanced. The idea of the duel system is quite cool though.

10. Slowness and loading times' effect
Score: 1  This is a killer. Both my roomie and myself like playing on the larger maps... we like being able to fully develop our heroes, and to put it bluntly, nobody likes sitting around twiddling their thumbs while the computer decides what to do. A minute or two is one thing, but the computer turns get seriously bogged down all too quickly and there really isn't an excuse for this.

11. Skills and Abilities System
Score: 7  I like the skill system a great deal. The problem with it is that the current character experience system gives me a feeling in every game tht the heroes are 'half-done' because it is too difficult on almost every map to hit level 30 or beyond, and it still takes about that long for most heroes to have a chance to hit their ultimate class skill... even in ToE. I don't have any problem with a level cap, but it would have been better to do it by having a linear experience progression for as long as it takes to finish your character skill slots, then go logarithmic (in the experience required) for any levels gained after that point.

12. Magic System
Score: 7  While the current system is a LOT better than Heroes 3 in most cases, there are still strong balance problems with the low initiative cost mass spells, as well as the lack of scaling of destructive spells on maps that last a long time and allow the buildup of very large armies. The variety could be better as well... there should be at least 4 good spells at each level from 1-5.

I am not going to give an overall score here, just an impression. I like Heroes 5 and think that it is a good game, otherwise I would not be playing it. However, it is a game with some nasty warts in the too long computer turns, very bad computer AI, and poor random map generator which limits replayability for the solo player and some multiplayer options.
