Cause of the good magic. This game is call hero of Might and Magic. You can't win purely by might A.K.A creatures alone. A Hero with strong magic like meteor shower, chain lightning, amagedon(S/P? i have poor english =.=) and implosion can really turn the tide. Of course you can't win just by pure magic against another hero.
Are you just talking about about dungeon now or all factions? Because i´ve won (and lost) against heroes who have only might or magic skills. If you face a magic faction with a might one like Haven you choose magic defences through might skills like defence? Am i stupid?
The first faction i ever played in H5 was dungeon and i loved them from the start. The thing i like most is the town´s atmosphere, the music sounds very mysterious. In these days i´ve converted to liking Haven more than dungeon, sometimes i try to go back to dungeon but i still find Haven more interesting. Dungeon is still a town which i like fighting against, losing or winning.

Oh, i m still talking abt dungeon, it may sounds misleading. Actually, i meant they have high spell power with the ability to invoke elemental weakness on enemies. Which makes them good magics user.

I'd like the beta elemental chains to be put back into the game.  And since that happening in a patch is impossible, I'd at least like the devs to make it so that it's easily moddable.  That would be really great.

Now that I know what beta EC is, I can't look at retail Dungeon the same way again.  I don't know what brain fart inspired UBI to retardize EC; prolly the same one that changed the beta Treant to the tree-crab.

If kids can understand and play with the magic systems in Final Fantasy games, then we PC TBS old-school game players can surely handle (and appreciate) the beta EC.

Voted magic. Like with every other magic based hero, his/her magic comes first and armies second. There are some decent creatures like the hydras and matriarchs though. The whole concept of dark elves is silly, since there exist already a faction for elves. Dungeon instead could have been run by minotaurs or some else subterranian race.

It's not silly, Nival was simply using the honoured precedent established by AD&D (of subterranean DE).  A game like HoMM is all about paying homage to classic monster archetypes, rather than about creating new ones.  That's why all the classic Greek monsters, Transylvanian monsters, biblical monsters, etc etc.

And they couldn't have used the honoured (and more original) precedent established by HoMM III?

C'mon, H3 Dungeon looks like a random assortment of AD&D underground monsters.  Granted, that's why it's called "Dungeon."  But that renders the "subterranean elves are out of place" argument moot.

H5 seeks to put coherence to each of its "new universe" factions.  They want each faction to have a defining characteristic in the form of a dominant ruling species.

If you are familiar at all with Heroes III's backstory and the continuing plot, you'll know that there are very good reasons for each of the Dungeon creatures existing in the same town.  It's meant to be a monstrous faction, not a homogenous gang of Dark Elven units thrown in with a couple of beasts.

What's so terrible about basing a town on location and a core ideology rather than some strangely overpopulous race always dominating every other unit?  In Heroes III we got a lineup of monstrous creatures who dwell underground.  Those Dark Elves hardly look like they even belong in caves.  And where do their enormous tunnels come from?  Back in Heroes III the Troglodytes were the slaves, not the Minotaurs.  They were forced to dig caves and tunnel networks to connect their holdings.  In Heroes V we have no explanation for this.  Where's the coherency?

Oh, and well, eh, sorry that this post doesn't really go well with the topic.

I like them because of they're creatures.I also have a question now that this thread has been revealed: Does Dungeon have they're own magic?
Haven-Light Magic
Sylvan-Summoning Magic (I'm not sure of this one but it's certainly not Dungeon's)
Inferno-Destructive Magic
Necropolis/Dungeon-Dark Magic

What do you think about the last one?I'm a bit confused...If Dark Magic belongs to Dungeon then why does it has Curse of the Netherworld wich affects every living creatures except Undead and Demonic ones.It makes no sense.

Huh? Inferno - Destructive and Dungeon - Dark?

All I know is:

Haven - Light Magic
Inferno - Dunno... does it applies?
Sylvan - Haven't touch this one yet.
Academy - Summoning
Necropolis - Dark
Dungeon - Destructive

I came to H5 straight from H2, so I can offer you the layman's viewpoint.  A dominant commanding caste using auxiliaries is how armies work.  There's no democracy and affirmative action.  And to a layman, a bunch of hippie-ideology monsters is silly.  Classic HoMM is about paying homage to archetypes everyone knows.  You get too fancy, and ppl won't like it.

I see DE to be a different sort of subterranean dwellers, like there are different kinds of ppl on Earth above-ground.  Even underground, they appreciate nature, unlike dwarves who like the rocks to do their bidding.  The DE find the natural huge cavernous places underground, and there they adapt their architecture to the cave, so their buildings look like they're melded into the stalagtites.  There are huge underground caverns in the earth extending thousands of meters deep.

In H5 the minotaurs are the serfs.  It's in the game text.

Fortress - light, destructive
Sylvan - light, destructive
Necro - dark, summoning
Academy - light, summoning
Dungeon - destructive, summoning
Inferno - destructive, dark

This might be wrong for the thread. I dont like dungeon

Why? I'm no man of destrucktion... I want buffs and debuffs, and evil creatures. They got the creatures but no numbers and I can't seem to make dungeon work with high SP and low Knowledge.

There was no democracy in Heroes III's Dungeon either, and, due to the chaotic nature of their society, neither was there any dominant commanding caste.  Dog-eat-dog.  In some campaign stories, the troops would even kill each other if it became necessary to do so, even trying to usurp their leader's position.  There is no homogenous rubbish with one race in charge, because there's no room for any.  As for the hippie-ideology monsters, well... I can only guess as to how silly you must find the Academy.

hi i heard al you guys talking about homm 3 and i just wanted to say that i loved h3 much better than h5 in all kinds of ways. the creatures in h3 dungeon fits much more better in inside the dungeon than the h5 dungeon creatures. let's hope that Nival (or any other guys that creates Homm 6) can do the dungeon faction much better.
