Persons you think are of great significance

Introduction:

I guess everbody has someone he admires or someone he looks up to. Some people have Jesus, young musicians have their bands, soccer players got Ronaldinho, Bush has Satan, etc. guess you know what I'm talking about. I thought it might be interessting to see who others look up to or find of particular significance so if started this thread. I'd like you to post about people who you'd like to present and tell a bit about them and explain why you think they are special (ok everbody is special but maybe why this on in particular) this reaches from Einstein to the firemen who saved your kitten from falling down the tree. But please we'll exclude all people who you look up to because they did a crime/something racist/something that harmend a group of people you don't like not that I think that it would be necassary to say this but just in case.

So well I'll start:

Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin a.k.a Charlie Chaplin

His Childhood

He was born on the 16th of April 1886 in London. His parents were both artists at the Music Hall but soon after his birth his farther left the Charles and his mother. The mother was suffering from mental problems so Charles and his half brother Sydney grew up in (I don’t know the proper English word, pardon me. I’ll edit it as soon as some can give me the proper word) “place were poor children get food and a bit education” and boarding schools. Well as you might see he didn’t have an easy life as a child. This should influence all his later works.

Climbing up the career ladder

On a tour of the London Music Hall to America the Keystone film company hired him. He was supposed to play some sidekick for a big (read: fat) actor basically he was chosen because he was thin and small. During his early years in the movie business he developed the character with which he later should become know around the whole world.
The Tramp:

To make a long story he short he started with 150 $ a week and ended up with a contract for 1 000000 $. This had a major impact on his movies since he now had no boundaries at all. Now he was the Producer, Scriptwriter, Composer, he did the cutting of the movie and Actor in his own movies. His first self produced movie was “The Kid” in which you can find many aspects of his childhood.

Other movies: A dogs Life, The Gold Rush, The Circus, City Lights, Modern Times, The Great Dictator, Limelight
I really advise you to watch the movies. They are true masterworks and all of them are very touching and most funny. The movies usually are very sad but they make you think and perhaps you appreciate your life a bit more afterwards (ok maybe I’m overdoing it a bit… but seriously if you have the chance rent the movie, download it or do something else do it it’s really worth it.).

Quotations: “Laugh and the world will laugh with you, cry and you’ll cry alone.”

“A day without a smile is a lost day.”

I've seen all of the movies I told you about here and I really admire Chaplin for the way he captures the mood of an entire time (I'm sorry for my english again but well yeah... Hope you get what I mean) his storys are all so heartwarming and sad at the same time. I guess the message of the movies varies from viewer to viewer but for me his movies are about the good that there is in humans. Just watch his movies I guess you'll like him to.

A good time to post this since tommorow is the 12th year aniversary to his assasination by Igal Amir a crazy fanatic son of a b***h, Itzhak Rabin probably the most well known person in Israel today.

Born Jerusalem, March 1922. After completing his studies, he served in the Palmach and the Israel Defence Forces for 27 years, including as Chief of Staff from 1964-68 , which was his position during the Six Day War [June 1967].

After serving as Israel's Ambassador to the US from 1968-73, Itzhak Rabin entered the Labor Party and the 8th Knesset. He headed the new government of 2 June 1974, after the fall of Golda Meir's government.

As Prime Minister , with American mediation, he conducted the negotiations which resulted in the 1975 interim agreement between Israel and Egypt.

In June 1976, Prime Minister Rabin's government ordered the Entebbe Operation to rescue Jewish Air France skyjack hostages from Uganda.

From 1977 to 1984, Yitzhak Rabin was an active opposition MK and then joined the National Unity Government of the 10th Knesset, serving as Defense Minister until March 1990.

Following his election as Chairman of the Israel Labor Party in March 1992, Yitzhak Rabin led the Labor Party to election victory in June 1992. As Prime Minister , he signed the Israel- Palestinian Declaration of Principles on 13 September 1993 , the Cairo Agreements with the Palestinians in May 1994, the Peace Agreement with Jordan on 24 July 1994 and the Interim Agreement with the Palestinians on 28 September 1995. He was also one of the three laureates awarded the highest accolade recognized by the entire world: the Nobel Peace Prize, on 10 December 1994.

Then on the evening of the 4th of november 1995 after a huge rally for peace in the middle east he was shot 3 times by Igal Amir from a really close range, they've rushed him to the hospital but later that evening all of Israel couldn't believe their ears when they declared him dead on national television. I was 11 back then and I was already in bed but the next day we did not learn at school but only discussed this action of pure stupidity and injustice.

Very good post, TNT. I just want to add a bit.

Itzhak Rabin was the first Israeli leader who believed that Israel can have other future - future of peace, although it's surrounded by enemies and hators from all the directions. He was also the only Israeli leader that was killed because of his political opinions.

He said some inspiring sentences, that we hear often in Isreal.
The most known one is "Say yes to peace, no to violence".

"There is one solution to keep the person's life; not slabs of steel, not tanks, not aircrafts, not fortresses of concrete. The solution is the peace."

"Peace is signed with enemies"

"I want to leave behind for the next generations a better world, placated world, a world that it's pleasant to live in. It's not too much to ask."

"Today we are going to a war without deads or wounded, without blood or suffering. The only war that it's pleasure to participate in - the war of the peace."

now before you say, he's a nazi! kill him!, this is based on real facts and real evidence

Adolf Hitler

ok, during the pre-WW2 days, hitler had rebuilt germany, after WW1 it was practicully left with nothing, hitler changed all that, he (litterly) made money, and did it to seccure germanys place as a nation, later in WW2, he was a man of improvement and the impossible

he first saw the british desigend tanks of WW1 and improved them beyond compare, even more so than the british, later he began to expand his ideas, one important one was the V1/V2 rocket, that layed the foundations of the "smart weapons" we have today, and to some extent is the first breakthrough for missile technology

his planes were the most advanced JET planes of the time, the only jet planes of the time, hitler had made these planes so powerful the only reason why they lost battles, was through the sheer comparasons in numbers

and some big companys made it big back then, BMW to name one, german technology was the spearhead for over a decade, and after the war, he laid the fondations for the bloodless war of all, the Cold War

and don't get me wrong, Hitler was a EVIL person, however technology wise, he was a man of invention and persurverance

I also admire A. H. --- Alfred Hitchcock that is!

Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock

Childhood

A. Hitchcock was born on August 13, 1899, in Leytonstone, London England. Alfred was youngest of three children of William Hitchcock a greengrocer and poulterer, and his wife, Emma Jane Hitchcock. Both of Alfred's parents where very strict and once Hitchcock's father send him to their local police station with a note asking the officer to lock him away for ten minutes as punishment for behaving badly. Hitchcock's father died when Hitchcock was 14. Hitchcock has described his childhood as being very lonely and sheltered, which was undoubtedly compounded by his weight issues. After his studies Hitchcock became intrigued by photography and started working in film in London. In 1920, he got a full-time job at Islington Studios with its American owner, Famous Players-Lasky and their British successor, Gainsborough Pictures, designing the titles for silent movies.

Movies

Many people remembers or thinks that Alfred Hitchcock was horror movie director but the real key to keep audience hooked was his suspense. In suspense, the director tells or shows things to the audience which the characters in the film do not know, and then artfully builds tension around what will happen when the characters finally learn the truth. Hitchcock's often used cameo roles where he appearances of himself in background somewhere in the movie, this was his calling card or signature in his films. Hitchcock directed 60 full length movies, 10 silent movies, 18 movies in England and 32 movies in Hollywood. He also had long-running TV series called Alfred Hitchcock Present from 1955 to 1965. Sixteen of the films he directed earned Oscar nominations, though only six of those films earned Hitchcock himself a nomination. The total number of Oscar nominations (including winners) earned by films he directed is fifty. Four of those films earned Best Picture nominations. Hitchcock is considered the Best Film Director of all time by The Screen Directory.

Hitchcock himself

Hitchcock had few phobias and one of them was fear of the police, which was the reason he said he never learned to drive. His reasoning was that if one never drove, then one would never have an opportunity to be pulled over by the police and issued a ticket. Apparently 10 minutes is enough...

Some rumors says that Hitchcock hated actors and he have said: "The writer and I plan out the entire script down to the smallest detail, and when we're finished all that's left to do is to shoot the film. Actually, it's only when one enters the studio that one enters the area of compromise. Really, the novelist has the best casting since he doesn't have to cope with the actors and all the rest." Hitchcock simply did not tolerate the method approach as he believed that actors should only concentrate on their performances and leave work on script and character to the directors and screenwriters. Despite his reputation as a man who disliked actors, several actors who worked with him gave fine, often brilliant performances and these performances contribute to the film's success.

Hitchcock was knighted in 1980 and 4 months after that Hitchcock died of renal failure at age of 80. If you are interested about Hitchcock films i suggest you see these movies: North by Northwest, Rear Window, Shadow of a Doubt and Psycho. These four movies are still great and really must see if you haven't already!

Many thanks to Wikipedia, made it lot easier for me.

Probably had as much to do with it as Al Gore had to do with making the internet.  There have been great scientist, great leaders, and inspirational people in every generation.  Some people have their virtues (or vices) lauded about in various forums.  In all of this however, I would like to remind you of some of the most inportant people there are.

Everyday people.  The firefighter who rushes into a burning building to save people, and does not expect to have their name plastered in newspapers or to be called a 'hero'.

The policeman who puts on their uniform everyday, even though it makes them a walking target in some areas, but never once thinks "Hey if I do this today, I will be a famous person."

The nurse who just worked 36 hours straight, but finds the energy to help save that one last person from a 15 car pile up.  Despite the fact that it won't even net a one sentence bi-line in a newspaper.

A person who, when seeing an accident, rushes over to help as much as they can.  Who takes off the shirt they have on their back, destroys it, and puts strips of cloth on cuts to stem the flow of blood.  Then quietly fades into the background when the ambulances and such show up.

Other people who do things without promise or hope of fame or fortune.  No payback or pats on the back in their minds.  Just doing the right thing for sake of doing the right thing.

Hitler didn't do anything... he only caused the war which made all the scientists and and companys do research in that direction... it was german technology and german scientist that achived the stuff Ted mentioned... I'm not blameing Ted or anything but it's just not correct that Hitler did any of that (trust me on that one I'm german and we learn a lot about that time...)

Just wanted to point out that indeed none of the armament technology was Hitler's invention. You need to catch up on your history son. You can't credit Hitler as an inventor, that's absurd. The tanks, for example, were general Guderian's ideea.

But I will agree that he was a great patriot and wanted the best for his people and country. He plunged the world into war for this, and became increasingly mad as he faced his defeat.

But the uprightness which he showed when all other German politicians were kissing French a**, the ability with which he animated an entire nation, the determination which he showed in pursuing a better future for his country, one can't but help to admire.

Just one thing... "the uprightness" he was just sick of germany paying the war depth of other countrys... has nothing to do with uprightness he was pursuing his own goals with that one...
"the ability with which he animated an entire nation" basically hate speeches... and after world war I there was a lot of hate in germany (especially against the french)... "the determination which he showed in pursuing a better future for his country" ehm = fanatic nationalism there is nothing to admire in that "determination"??

Ok this is going slighty off topic here... no more discussion about hitler oook?
