Someone please help me starting a map...

Hi everyone!!
I was playing the map "Key to Victory" today, on hard difficulty. I am absolutely no beginner, having finished both original and HoF campaigns, and I am also not new to a map with hard setting, but I got quite much stuck with this map.
I normally play Haven, sometimes Sylvan too, but my development has been relatively slow because there's almost no loose resource, except for one camp fire. It ocurred to me to use the console to see how AIs are doing, and they were building the Dragon Spire in the 3rd week, while I was still struggling to get the upgraded Griffin Tower...before this map I've played some big maps like Rise to Power also under the hard difficulty and that wasn't so tough. I wonder if I am missing some real important thing? Could someone, perhaps experienced with this partucylar map, give me some hints? How do you play, at the beginning of the map?
And also, does AI player cheat in a non-watchable battle like it did back in Heroes 3? I saw one of the computers took pack of Death Knights out, but noticed no decrease in their numbers.

well i can't really help ya,but ai sure does cheat as far as i know or in HoF atleast,one time i was about to attack ai on heroic diff,i found that he has 200 paladins,while he was playing sylvan (no spare castles) i thought ok maybe,they joined him,even though there were no creature stack that big on the battlefield,but i thought i could still take him,so i was like any1 and headded towards his,right when we were about to clash i found that his paladins suddenly double to being 400 right in a change of 1 turn (he didn't lose mana so he couldn't have summoned em) but..well i was dungeon so i did a few - ai hit n' runs

Sigh...seems no one could really help me here...did you win against 400 Paladins?
Here a question: Do you normally avoid any casualties by not attacking a neutral stack, thus avoiding taking gold mine etc... or would you sacrifice some of the units, in the exchange for additional gold ,resources, and mines? Because in this particular map, every chests are relatively heavily guarded, so that one wouldn't get any loose gold for, say, building the capitol, thus slowing town development.
Which way do you guys normally go?

i mostly prefer not to lose anything,but sometimes it's a must(ur case as a for instance),so i can stand to have a few losses but not many,and i won vs 400 paladins by doin hits n' runs as a warlock

....That's handy!
Sometimes a gold mine is guarded by lots of Hell Chargers, and I think that's not meant to be taken early, right? It's not just a problem of losing some units but it's whether that neutral stack is defeatable or not......
Ahh, I will try the map once more some time, but what do I do if I still can't figure out how to defeat those crazy AIs?

Good question. I found myself in a very late game with 105 orso Black Dragons, thinking I stood a good chance.... Turned out the enemy had 200+ Black Dragons and 230+ Emerald Dragons He was Sylvan.

Im ok with AI cheating to gain recources... But I'm NOT ok with AI cheating to gain such insane amounts of creatures!

Really...I don't understand. Who made this AI??? Why allow them to cheat? You know what appears if you enter "enable_cheats" in the console? There goes something like "Cheating is the best way to skip much fun of the gameplay"...and now I am having really great fun seeing that the AIs cheat too. Yes I don't like it when AIs can not cast high level spells too but......
This is a great disappointment. I see that's why it's so difficult to play a poor-in-resource map, especially when it's not big and you will encounter the AIs very soon.

well i kinda like the fact that ai cheats for more units to make it challenging,but 200++ blackies is just nuts,and i just wanna say kildars,what faction do u play??cause the creeping is kinda diffrent from factions to others,and the hell chargers are walkers so am thinkin they'd be easy

for dungeon i mainly go for destructive magic + cold death if possible and if there are any cold spells in ur guild as an early game option,but if u're not a fan of destruction,if u were able to get some summoning skills they're just amazing and stalkers + invisibilty is a good abuse ^.^

with sylvan i really like the arcane archers for creeping walkers,swift and incredibly strong,u might wanna have an additianol stack of master hunters for warding arrows and make sure with the split sprites to always make the shooters unreachable

with academy it's just motw and diffrent usages of spells like mag golems and motw + fireball or something to heal the golems and kill the enemy cold death is a good choice there too , blade barrier if possible and the hell chargers wont reach ur 1 cornerd stack and they'll prolly attack the blades or just wait like idiots ^.^

with haven it's the brutes for bash and Xbowmen with dev str they're just awesome ^.^

with stronghold it's goblin trapers with traps + cetaur marauders or fear my roar + high mana too if possible

sorry i dun really play the other factions but for necro i prefer vampires to protect the skill archers and decay + raise day

Nice! Thank you for the post!
I mainly play Haven, but I haven't started playing ToE yet so there's no alternate upgrades. I found myself quite stuck after I've built the upgraded monestry (due to the lack of resources of course) and I won't build stable before it...
Anyway I will try once more before further complaints...

if no tote,then marksmen + devine str also and make sure the enemy is in like 3 tile radius so they ignore def

Err...finally, I managed to waste each AIs in Key to Victory map, thanks to war machine skill. Looks like Marksman isn't that much weaker than Crossbowman isn't it?
I will have a particular save for this game...it's worth remembering that I alone wasted 3 AIs in one game. Yeah well there seemed to be some battles between AIs but they seemed to have gotten out of it without many casualties. Anyway I killed all of their main heroes, which felt awesome!!

yay gz hope i helped,and marksmen aren't that weak too,when units are close they're INSANE just 8 max dmg and no def and war machines is a very powerful skill for creeping and early/mid game and now for late game 2 in tote ^.^

Oh? Would you mind explaining why that's so?
The problem is...HoMM needs so much time to play, and time is really precious. I got the ToE expansion and I am happy with it but uh...I must manage some time to play it~~~...

this is why

all factions can get triple ballista and flaming arrows now,and also can get the new ring that adds another shot to the ballista so it's kinda strong now ^.^
