Here we go....

Leadership - at least I can use other troops without penalty
Offense - 30% extra damage, lol! Need I say more?
Armourer - anything to protect my poor troops
Archery - an offence skill for my shooters never goes astray
Logistics - Nuff said!
Wisdom - any hero is useless if he can't cast magic arrow!
Earth Magic - slow, ressurrection and implosion...
Luck - double damage from level 7's!

PS: Lith, I still reckon you're a beginner. No idiot chooses three magic schools let alone FOUR.

*smile*

Have you ever heard something like "Berserk"?

Where'd you find this first part??

Every hero can cast magic arrow with or without Wisdom.  I agree it's a no brainer for skills, but it's the rationale for it that makes me

Ideal eight skill setup?

Necromancy
Armorer
Tactics
Offense
Earth Magic
Logistics
Wisdom (mainly for TP) or Pathfinding if no TP
Water or Air Magic (not both)

If its not going to be a very hard map and I'm not going to be playing my ass off to win, I like to imagine each different hero as having certain skills.  But generally I would go mostly for the good skills, and just once and while pick the not as good ones just for a change and depending on if I think it suits the hero. (I think we generally all know what the good and bad skills are).

Heroes II

It really depends for who. If the hero leads Knight faction, then Ballistics is a must. If the hero leads Wizard creatures, Archery is much better because it cancels siege wall penalty AND adds damage.

1. Logistics (a no-brainer)
2. Wisdom (all mass spells are at least level 3, and Antimagic is level 3. Direct damage hurts in heroes 2)
3. If not a Necromancer or Sorceress, take Mysticism.
4. Luck (+1 morale bonus for not mixing factions means Expert Leadership is less useful)
5. If Necromancer, Warlock or Wizard, take Estates. Warlock needs it the least I guess.
6. Ballistics for Knight/Barbarian, Archery for Sorceress/Wizard. Necromancer also needs Ballistics if there's not enough resources for boners.
7. Pathfinding, useful on most maps
8. Leadership.

Now for support heroes things get more interesting. Due to the way sea travel works, Navigation is good mostly for support heroes (because someone can land and you won't catch him next turn).
Eagle eye is good for captains - heroes who serve as city defenders in absence of main hero, and you can't/don't want to build the guild.
Scouting is good. Pathfinding, logistics - good.

Marching to the beat of a different drummer here.  My main hero is always a magic-intensive "diplomat."

Wisdom
Diplomacy
Earth
Air
Water
Fire
Sorcery
Intelligence

This would be Cyra or Adela usually.  She explores, recruiting wandering creatures for her armies, leaving most of the town-generated creatures to the defensive heroes.

Defensive hero would typically be:

Wisdom
Archery
Tactics
Earth
Air
Water
Fire
Sorcery (if high spell points) or Offense (if low spell points)

Personal idea:

1. Wisdom: who can live without it?
2. Earth Magic: town portal, slow, force field, implosion-he he
3. Water Magic: in some great map, I always choose it (summon boat, prayer, bless,.... )
4. Logistics: explore the map very quickly
5. Armorer/Offense/Archery
6. Sorcery if magic hero
7. Diplomancy
8. Intelligence: best for early game.

As I've said before I usually go for different skills depending on the hero, as I imagine each hero as having different skills.

But if I expect a hard fight and there is no messing around, I'll take these 8 skills:
Offence
Armorer
Logistics
Wisdom
Earth Magic
Leadership (if not death) else necromancy
Ballistics
Tactics

Only problem is the skills you are offered are random so what you get may not be want you exactly want. Archery is also acceptable depending on hero, resistance is good and Pathfinding I like to have too.

I won't choose luck unless I have to. There are plenty of artifacts that will boost luck. Leadership is more important because if your morale is low and a stack losses a turn it can really hurt you.

Resistance is also a great skill and I think it is underlooked. I like to have that too if offered and I hate playing against it.

Leadership is same as luck, it has a limited cap which can easily be reached with proper artefacts. No need.

Ballistic is meh, both single and multiplayer. Average needed.

Yes, that is true.
Ballistics can be passed up yeah.
But there are times when I don't have it and I really wish I did.

That's not quite true.

Well what do you mean by this.
Please explain.

I know that different heroes will be offered different skills depending on their class, like a knight for example will be offered leadership more often than other heroes, and that all the skill offers are generated as the game loads, but the skills you get are still random from a player's point of view.
It explains it here:
http://www.heroesofmightandmagic.com/heroes3/secondaryskilladv.shtml

I remember in particular when I was playing the Tarnum's knight campaign, and my two backup heroes wouldn't get the skills I wanted offered to them. I had to reload many times which made the whole campaign rather frustrating. I was trying to get offence, armorer, and logistics as the last 3 skills for a knight, and sorcery for Adelaide but I had to keep reloading. Other times I'd get those skills for those same heroes offered early.

I can't count how many times I was playing with a hero like Crag Hack, and get to the point where I'm offered a choice between two undesirable skills, like for example scouting and scholar or artillery or learning. Other times with the same hero the better skills just all come to you.

You can influence how your hero will develop (don't jump early on what it will probably be offered again and again), but you can't control his level ups at 100%. However one useless skill is an acceptable ratio. The problems start when you got scouting, learning and eagle eye at once on your main.

I read in CH some post where the player was complaining Kyreee did not get logistic expert until 20th level. Of course, if you play that way, you ask for it...

I thought leadership gave you the morale skill, not luck.

Anyway, sometimes certain artifacts on the map can only be acquired by someone with the Leadership skill.  Equipped luck or morale boosters won't help you there.

What he was trying to say is, the skills leadership AND luck can both be easily "replaced" by artefacts, so taking them as secondary skills is a waste.

You really should upgrade your version of H3, because that "feature" isn't present anymore on the latest upgrades..
