Just a note about the modding wiki: the tutorials there are not made of stone. They can be edited, completed, new tutorials can be added with more basic explanations, ...
So, if anyone feels it's needed and can contribute, then please, by all means, do.
However, in the specific matter of adding creatures and everything related (model editing, specifying animations...), I also think it's of advanced level, and requires some basic knowledge first.
To take an example as Maurice did, there's a reason why there's no crash course on General Relativity and Field Theory in first year college.
Cepheus' advice is very sensible: here's Dynamics 101 amounts more or less to edit some creatures' stats, names. Then go to icons, maybe edit an existing model.

ok, Lordi, let's solve your icon problem.
First, "waiting weeks" here means you've posted your problem 5 days ago. I find myself that time flies, compared to everything I'm doing, I guess it's even worse for you.
Anyway, the answer I gave you 5 days was indeed a little short, so let's start from there.
My guess is that your dds has the DXT3 format (which is used in the texture), but the icons should in A8R8G8B. That's kind of like .jpg or .png or .gif for usual images. It's easy to check but since you didn't share the icon dds, you'll have to check yourself if you want.: I use Windows Texture Viewer to simply view dds files, and the format is given in the status line.
Ti fix this, it depends on the tools you're using. I'm using photoshop, with the nvidia DDS plugin. When you save as DDS, the DDS export dialog opens and let you select the format in top left drop box (where DXT1 is selected in the screenshot).
For an icon, choose:
- 8.8.8.8 ARGB 32bppp Unsigned
- 2D Texture (in the drop box just below)
- No Mip Maps (in the Mip Map Generation box on the right)
That's, it should be ok.

btw, there is the same icon bug in one of the unlock all heroes mod of dungeon if you didn't know
edit:
oh yea about the "waiting weeks"
lol sorry i was confused since the teachers were on a strike for 2 months (w00t) and it just got ended so..
and now 2 questions left:
1) no one may know why i can't use my map editor maps :S
but it surely suck..:X should i write to nival or something?
2) about the texture, what do you mean by check you alpha channels in the dds? :S
that's it

I don't want you all to misinerpret me as a complete beginner. I have a lot of experience modding other games, I just need to know the basics of this one (by experience I mean mostly changing numbers, occasionally adding things). I would just like to get a small start in the right direction because there is nothing worse than working on a mod for a few weeks then finding you did ONE thing wrong and it now doesn't work at all.
For now, I would just like to now how to edit colors of existing creatures. Once my edits are complete, then I will probably be in a more desperate situation trying to figure out how to add creatures and program all of their stats as well as icons, descriptions (thuogh I know how to do this), and everything else needed to add creatures.
So if anyone can give me a quick coloring remedial, that would be very much appreciated.

I knew that that red face meant something...
I just need to know where the texture for Magma Dragons is located. I know data.pak but I need help from there on in. Just give me an exact directory and I won't bother any of you ever again for like 5 minutes.

Thanks a lot. All right now one more issue. When I open the thing its just all the parts seperated and so on. I expected as much from the guide. Now how do I actually check what my model looks like? Would I have to insert it as a visual mod into the game and then take a screenshot all just to post a picture to see if everyone approves? Or is there an easier way?

No easier way, that's what we all do and it's the only way that works. The wiki will tell you how to convert the files, now just make a new .h3m file in the Editor, leave the editor and open the .h3m with WinRar, recreate the folder paths to the Magma Dragon's textures and add in your file. The new file will "replace" the standard one. Now open your map and you should see the changes when you place a Magma Dragon down.
I learned all this without help

A little too fast. Here's where I am. I used GIMP and simply changed the coloration nicely as a small test. I did things the old fashioned way thinking they would work (in other words I took the extracted Chracters/Creatures... folder, zipped it, made it a .h5u, and placed it in UserMODs hoping to get an instant visual change). Clearly no good. If you could explain a little slower from the point where I hit Save As on the picture.
BTW, when you say editor, you are referring to my editor (so GIMP) right?

Alright.
Editor = the Map Editor.
I assume you have saved your texture as a .dds file. Stop me if you haven't. What you have done with the .h5u is fine. There are two methods to make a mod: you can create a zipped .h5u, as you have done, or you can modify a .h5m (a Heroes V map). Either way works fine.
So, if you have placed your .h5u into the UserMods directory, and everything has been done properly, you are set to go. Either start up the game and find some Magma Dragon you can look at, or just enter the MAP editor and place a Magma Dragon somewhere. Either way you will now be able to see the modded textures.
Hopefully.

Cepheus you have been a great help so far. I just ask you to make sure everything here is correct:
1.) The edit picture is saved as a .dds file which is in Characters etc. folder.
2.) When the saved .dds is in the said file, I make that file zipped and then make it a .h5u
3.) I put it in UserMODs
The main thing is whether I save the new texture as a .dds or a .bmp file (thats the one I use)

All right I have a problem. The picture of the screwed up body parts of a recolored Magma Dragon is saved as a .dds file. It is in My Documents/Characters/Creatures/Dwarves/T7_Dwarves
What I did was made Creatures a zipped file and named it Creatures.h5u (exactly like that its not the .zip error). However, no visual change can be seen. Is there any other file I must include with the texture or is there anything that seems wrong?

Is your Magma Dragon saved in Creatures.h5u following this file path:
data.pak\Characters\Creatures\Dwarves\T7_Dwarf
with the .dds file in T7_Dwarf?

Okay I think I found the error but would like to make sure. Here is what I did:
1) Open WinRAR and went to the directory you told me. Extracted FireDragon texture.
2.) Used DDScv to change extracted image into a .bmp file. Now I edit it in GIMP as I please.
3.) I didn't change it to .dds but I tried to do that previously and the game crashed (yes, progress!). How should I change the type of file this is? Just rename? Or use DDScv (in which case, please explain how)?
And then we ended up here.
