Most powerful character in HMM3...

I've been playing this game for years, and it's still as addicting now as it was when I first started.

The most powerful character in the game, by far, is Moander.  Here's why:

If you equip Moandar with the Cloak of the Undead King and have Expert Necromancy, he will raise Liches/Power Liches from his fallen enemies.  It is vital that Moandar has Expert Necromancy otherwise the resurrected enemies with only be either Zombies or Wights.  Why is this important?  Because Liches/Power Liches are Moandar's speciality (Attack/Defense bonuses after level 5) and missile creatures!  This is a HUGE advantage.  At some point, once he kills a lot of enemies, Moandar will have hundreds or thousands of missile troops in his army.  Don't even bother with any other undead creature at this point.  While Dread Knights are powerful creatures (and they're far better than Ghost Dragons), make Moandar's army consist entirely of Liches.  If you upgrade all of them into Power Liches, each subsequent resurrected enemy will be a Power Lich, too.  Again, a subtle but huge advantage.

Now equip Moandar with the Bow of the Sharpshooter.  His Liches/Power Liches will be able to shoot at anything on the battlefield even if the enemy right next to them.

To REALLY dominate, also get Moander the Armor of the Damned.  Liches/Power Liches aren't that fast, so the opposition may get in a few shots.  However, if you already have hundreds or thousands in your army, in won't matter.  Once the Armor of the Damned begins casting its spells, you will completely dominate.

To be absolutely invincible, make sure Moander has Wisdom, Earth Magic, and Archery skills.  Why?  With Wisdom and Earth Magic, you can devastate enemies with Implosion at Expert Earth Magic, but equally as important, if not more, is the Animate Dead spell.  This spell will make sure your undead ranks never thin... even if you do have Necromancy to constantly replenish your army.  And with your Lich/Power Lich army, Archery is highly beneficial for extra damange.

There you have it.  Use Moandar as your main Hero.  Get the following Combination Artifacts: Cloak of the Undead King, Bow of the Sharpshooter, Armor of the Damned.  Specialize in the following skills: Wisdom, Earth Magic, Archer (and Necromancy, of course).

You will absolutely destroy the opposition with this item and skill set !!!

LOL i remember when i was a big n00b in h3 playin' and every single game i choosed Necro/Thant and the XL with U / 2 min / quick combat settings loool.
This is science fiction with Cloak for Power Liches or whatever it is, it will never happen in an online tourney game and it really ruins the fun of the game. I once played in the begginings the necro - thant combo  a 3do template xl + u and got in the "n" month the cloack and finished the game with around 3-4000 thousand p liches x 7 on main. That was really stupid when i think ab it now.
I really prefer not so large army when final fight happens, thats week3 or rarely week4, well depends on the map ofc, but it's more interesting than havin 100k skellies or 50k p liches lol.
I found it now stupid, daaaamn stupid tho'
Cheers!

Welcome to the forums!

You'll find very much great info about the game in this forum, though much of it must be first filtered from the false info or "not-so-great ideas" which are also accumulated when less-enlightened people are arguing with those who truly know the things (usually single player vs online players that is) about the issues. In time you'll learn who to trust (if generalized, that is the online players). But to give a few obvious names of currently more or less active members; Agelito (moderator), Maretti, Liophy, SAG, Xarfax111, Binabik, Russ, ...

You probably won't find others very impressed by your argument because:

1. You make so huge requirements for that hero to be that great that it's just not gonna happen in real games. What are the chances to get exactly those items required to combine even one of those combo items you mentioned?

2. If you were thinking theoretically most potent hero, it still could be easily proven wrong.... Wouldn't Orrin (with his Archery Specialty, Necromancery from Witch Hut) give more advantage for those (Power) Liches for example... And Isra would accumulate much greater army within the same time... and so on.

Im not completely sure how you think it works, but your army doesn't have to consist of just PLs to gain PLs instead of Liches. You just have to have your ALL (7) army slots "equipped" with some creatures with NO Liches and AT LEAST one stack of PLs. And this isn't probably wise since gaining upped necromanced creatures instead on normal ones receives a 33% penalty (not 100% sure if this penalty occurs with others than Skeletons though).

P.S. Oh, nice one TPAM

Like any other hero with expert necromancy + cloak of the undead king?

That would be ... 11 artifacts in total. Good luck pulling that one off .
Do you know the exact bonuses Moander gives his (power) liches depending on his level?

Wow, wasn't expecting any replies at all to a game so old...

I've never played HoMM3 online.  Plus, I primarily play the Random Map Generator, so I should've mentioned that I was basing my ideas on a XL randonly generated map... one that would take 6+ months of game time (not real time !!!) to complete.  Obviously, no one is going to acquire the Cloak of the Undead King, Bow of the Sharpshooter, and Armor of the Damned in a shorter game or scenario.  My bad for not mentioning that, I can see why people were so incredulous.

In response to some of the replies:

1.  Yes, you could get the Necromancy skill for Orrin, but being that he's not an Undead Hero, his Undead army would suffer from low morale quite often.

2.  Yes, you would only need 1 stack of Power Liches to resurrect more PL's from defeated enemies.  My point was that if you have all 7 stacks of Liches upgraded to PL's, you can keep distributing them evenly among all 7 stacks.  If I possessed all 3 Combination Artifacts that I mentioned and had 7000 PL's, I'd rather 7 stacks of 1000 rather than all 7000 in 1, even if the other 6 stacks were filled with Level 7's.  The reason is obvious: missile attacks are a huge advantage. Why concentrate a large number into 1 stack when you can keep increasing your ranks and keep spreading them out?

3.  Yes, Isra (and Vidomina, for that matter) would acquire a greater army within the same amount of time due to their Necromancy bonus, but you wouldn't get the added Attack/Defense bonus that Moander would for Liches.

Undead are immune to morale, positive and negative.  Orrin would be fine with an undead army.

Ecoris,

Moandar's Liches/PL's get an Attack/Defense bonus after Level 5.

In the current game that I'm playing, with absolutely no artifacts equipped, Moandar's Liches only have a + 1 for Speed at Level 1 (no Attack/Defense bonus yet).

But at Level 6, his Liches has a +3 Attack and +5 Defense.

At Level 10, again with nothing equipped to enhance his stats, his Liches have +6 Attack and +5 Defense.

I haven't checked what those numbers are at something like Level 25, but is that what you were asking for?

Are you sure you don't include you hero's Attack - and Defence Skills to those bonuses?

If I remember correctly, those number shouldn't be that high.

Well, more or less. I must admit that I was testing you and indeed you have included the hero attack/denfense bonuses. Moandor's speciality gives the following bonuses (to liches as well as power liches):
Attack bonus = (Moandor's level)/5 * 0.05 * 13
Defense bonus = (Moandor's level)/5 * 0.05 * 10
The term (Moandor's level)/5 is calcualted as integer division, i.e. fractions are discarded, e.g. 13/5 = 2. The total bonus however is computed as a float and rounded up to the nearest integer greater than or equal to the computed value. Long story short: At level 5 the liches get a +1/+1 bonus. At level 10 it becomes +2/+1, at level 15 it becomes +2/+2, and then +3/+2, +4/+3 and +4/+4 at levels 20, 25 and 30 respectively.
Clearly this is not worth the effort. The best thing is the +1 to speed. You would be much better of using a hero with necromancy as speciality.

IMHO, creature specialists should have at least similar bonuses to those  in H5. +1 to att and def every 2 levels is much more like it, even tho they don't get speed bonus.

But you get +1 speed, too. That's ok.

It's true, I rarely pick a creature specialist. But there are specials, that are worse.

At least, there is no reason to complain about heroes like Alkin. Of course, there are heroes, that are specialists for useless stuff, like Djinns - this is worth as much as ... Eagle Eye. A higher bonus wouldn't make them any better

If playing homm 3 complete with AB heroes enabled, or AB from the start at a random map or any original campaign or map, the best ones are:

*Solmyr the Wizard (Chain lightning at start),

*Gelu the Ranger (upgrade elves, archers, marksmen into sharpshooters),

*Adrienne the Witch (inferno spell at start).

The best towns should normally be Rampart-town, Castle-town, Dungeon-town, Fortress-town and Tower-town.

Inferno-town, Necropolis, Conflux-town and Stronghold-town are usually pretty useless. They should have been provided with better heroes to balance the game a little.
