Thread Killing....
Ever since I've come to this board, I've always wondered why good discussion threads sink to the bottom of the page and then out of sight. I've seen so many good threads go this way, the way of the forgotten pages and I've never really thought about it until I read a post by someone just now...
The thread was actually going quite nicely, it was a new thread and there was some interest generated, people were introducing ideas of their own which were in turn being discussed by the next poster in turn.
And then somebody (I won't say who, you know who you are) turned up and simply posted this:

Excuse me? What the hell was that?! I have now seen the thread sink just like countless hundreds of other ones and I've come to realize that the person who's posted last in these threads is somehow responsible for killing what was a geniunely interesting discussion. Either that or nobody has anything to add to it anymore. I find that with 10 new posters arriving daily, surely there'd be plenty of new ideas that could be tossed around to keep such threads alive.
Is there a wrong way to post? Is there such a thing as posting a thread killer?
I think so. The more I'm here, the more I believe that what you write and the things you discuss can be somewhat detrimental to the thread. If you don't say something controversial or interesting, then people are far less likely to respond to it. And if you just post crap like two letters (N and O) then you're effectively putting an end to a thread.
You might argue that people can still pick up and post in relation to an earlier post made by someone else and not necessarily the last one, but that just goes to prove that the last post was lame and not worth further discussion. And you can also argue that if I'm such a smartarse that maybe I should revive these threads myself.
I have done this already. But I'm not about to be the crusading green witch of the board and run around reviving every flagging and interesting thread just so some people can kill it all over again with their two favourite letters.
Me personally, I try and ask questions during my post or I deliberately say something that I hope will annoy someone in some way, perferably a lot of people. And if not, then I'll PS something at the end, just food for thought that will leave the next person able to join in freely and easily into the conversation.
So here we go, it's time for me to ask YOU guys a question:
What do you think of thread killing?

strange as it may sound, I agree...
...sometimes perfect threads, with potential to hit a reply number of 600+ and cause some thinking are destroyed by a single post, most o the times totally irrelevant to the topic... sometimes people end to catch a phrase out the last post and create a topic out of it... for example i would easily hang on to you saing you are a "smartarse" and ruin this whole thread... it is irritating and sad to see a thread you like and value, been destroyed by a lame post... if, for example, some one posted something irrelevant in the RP thread, therefore causing the thread to demeanish, i would go mad...
...the point is that we should all try and post in topic, there is no need to say something irrelevant... that's what the IM is about...
...just my 2 cents...

Thread killing
What causes it is topic move to top when posted. My humble opinion. With new topics- senseless topics- brought up every day, the interesting and worthy ones die. Plus, sometimes it's hard to keep track of long posts....

I know exactly how to kill threads with simple answers.
But...
It's all others fault if they don't try to keep that thread alive. Period.
If I kill one man does the rest of the army run away?
If it does...What the hell that army was doing there in the first place?
I have thought this same thing about good threads disappering many times and it's of course unfortunate that some threads die so soon. I have tried to raise some threads back into surface but it's not so easy.
It's our job as posters to keep those threads alive. Sometimes someone kills some thread just by accident. Poster possible says something that doesn't create anything new to the thread but instead kinda makes it hard to answer. It can happen when example posting something offtopic which leads to discussion about something else and the original idea of thread dies. Very unfortunate of course.
We all can kill. We all can also heal if we want.
Let's start not point out the killers as we all are guilty to thread killing, but instead try to use our creative powers to bring live to those threads that are "killed".

I never realized that people cared so much for words on a computer screen. But, yes, I agree, it's unpleasant to see a great thread slowly become extinct. I know I still miss the "What is Honor?" thread. Lots of good posts there.
*sigh*
But that's just natural selection at work, isn't it? If people aren't interested then they let other people kill threads. While in the meantime, the same old, boring threads continue. (quick! We need another hit & run thread  )
*sigh*
Thread killing is just an everyday fact of life on message boards. It's sad when it happens to a thread you care about but I prefer that over seeing a thread continue for pages. Where people just keep saying the same thing over and over and over (see the hit & run threads as an example).
And there are threads that deserve to be killed, aren't there?

I don't like to see my favorite threads go away, but sometimes no one wants to post on the good thread and you wait... and wait... the thread goes back a few pages never to return.
The biggist thread killer, in my opinion, is not the "NO" type answer (That could just be a valid point on the thread poised in a humorous monosyllabic form), but the inane personal chat where two or three people interupt a thread and chit chat for a page or so, after that the thread is almost unrecoverable.
There are plenty of chit chat threads, so that posting this stuff on a valid topic thread should be considered rude and discouraged.
So if you find yourself chatting on a topic thread, PLEASE get a room! (Start your own chat thread or use the IM, that's what it's for.)

I think we have a common misconception here
It's in the definitions. I find one thread interesting, you find interesting another. And we hope out threads of interest will develop, etc. However, people find another thing to post on and the thread is just forgotten... things like that.

You're right about that, Oldtimer. That seems to kill more topics than anything else, especially at another board that I'm at where it happens maybe twice a day (fortunately, there's a separate forum for the really serious discussions and none of those who start the side-tracking visit that forum).

But also what sometimes kills a thread is something that starts out as something interesting (such as building caravans for example) and then two people get involved over a dispute and argue and b**** over it until nobody else dares post lest they are drawn into the confrontation, and it isn't interesting any more.

I must ask, was it I, whom you were refering to? I have posted those two letter's, (you so much despise) and it was making a clear point. Lord_Woock asked a question, and I replied w/very good intention's, and a clear awnser.
I truly hope, you dont mean me. I dont think you do, I mean the thread is still alive, like my point was taken and the thread moved on. If Lord_woock (or anyone who saw his post on pg 1) read it, then *he* took my point in.
