Roaming Beasts

There was a thread like this, but it died out, so I'll put this one in here.

Here's the concept: There could be roaming beasts that go through the map (restrained by fences, roads, etc) that will either flee the hero or attack.

Creatures:
Wolves
Bears
Great Cats, who sometimes work in Groups
....Tigers
....Pumas
....Leapords
....Jaguars
Boars
Great Eagles
Crocodiles
Giant Serpents
Lizards (you know, the ones that Dark Elves ride)

Water Creatures:
Sharks
Krakens

Other beasts can include creatures from existing factions, such as Wyverns, Unicorns, Griffins, etc.  They would roam free if not specifically set to that point.  The roaming cretures would attack armies if they felt they are strong enough, and they can be chased and attacked for experience.  Also, their pelts fetch a pretty penny.  I feel this would add a more wild element to the game, as well as being a bit more realistic.

I like the idea, but the creatures should be given relevant synergy so that they appear in places they should (zaurs in the underground, wolves in the tundra, so on, so forth) and have the creature to creature competition/alliance that natural creatures have. Also, if the creature part needs some creatvity, I'd be happy to help as always.

feel free.  And I agree about synergy, but I feel Wolves should be in snow, tundra, or grass.

good idea but what if say a lizard meets a bear then what happens?
or what if an encounter occurs between other creatures?
what if a group joins another group and creates a deadly army?
what if lets say dismissed creatures become dismissed do they wander?
if a mounted hero dies does the mount roam?

Hey, that could work!  Perhaps some race's mounts (Haven's Horse, Academy's Elephant) could become pickups, like recources, that increase hero movement for a day or so, and others (Haven's Unicorn, Inferno's Nightmare) could become roaving threats!

Great idea.  With your permission, I would like to suggest a few things for this.  Some animals have great hunting/foraging skills, and I think this should reflect if you have wondering animals.

First some animals should have tactics.  Also, they should get a bonus for numbers, and possibly a percentage chance to get an ambush (where they start out surrounding all the enemy and have bonuses to attacks/damage/init/ect).  Maybe even a demoralizing effect under certain conditions.  (Ever been face to face with a grizzly and unprepaired?  Talk about a negative morale time.)

Possibly even bonuses the nearer they are to their starting point (ie their den/home/ect).  Also don't forget about some of the more 'mystical' animals. Even the non-intelligent ones usually have some sort of special abilities.

Well, I think some of those should be in factions (Roc, Bassilisk) but else good!

My question is, how can this work when a hero has an uber army (Minotaurs, Dark Riders, Faceless) against lesser creatures?  I mean, Bassilisks I get, but what about Tigers and other smaller creatures?  It seems kindof overkill to unleash armegedon or Dark Magic or Dragons or something against a creature that a peasant could take down.

I have an idea as to fix that problem. How about legendary units? Like the Basilisk, a baneful stone-clad lizard that cannot be harmed by the kin of earth, its gaze petrifies those whom it crosses in fear. Or the thunderhawk, an incredible bird that lightning just amplifies its power and can call the storm in times of need. Creatures like that that can ward off even the strongest of armies in a pack.

In addition, creatures aggressive tendency, or AT for short, should be fine-tuned to each creature. For example, spiders generally only attack if they feel threatened, so a small army (100 or > could pass through unharmed. On the otherhand, Scorpions are very territorial. They will strike once something enters their domain. And yes, some creatures will flee. Others will band together and strike as a fighting force.

PS's- Leviathins are not necessarily turtles.
- Behemoths are a must, to make up for their absence from Stronghold.

-this makes it the what time you've changed you avatar, mamgaeater.

How exactly would sharks attack you?
They'd jump on board and start ferociously looking at you? But they'd lose 30 hit points per turn or something

Dude sorry I don't mean to be a smartass but sorry... Those Great Cats are NOT hunting in groups. They are about as teretorial as you can get... I know you said "sometimes" but not even that applies in nature... Ok so nevermind I just needed to say that go ahead and ignore it. Apart from that I think the idea is nice.

Creature mood could be terrain based: Snow means they are hungry since there is not much food, but they are more docile in the Grass where there is lots to hunt.

You do know there's a similar feature in most turn based strategies, including Heroes 4?

In Age of Wonders, mood of roaming creatures is set either randomly or by mapmakers; it ranges from "guarding" to "patrolling" to "wandering". In addition, sometimes their behaviour changes based on players' actions: it may become "avenging", so creatures would pursue your armies and attack them.

Indeed, wandering parties can merge if they share the agenda or alignment... or even fight each other if not.

As for the aforementioned sharks, there were sea monsters in H4 - and they used to crawl on the land or ship. Yeah, I agree it was silly. I'd rather see the kraken, which could reach its opponents from the water.

I remember that... They moved as if they have epilepsy strokes.
Along with the antenna thingy on their heads.

I remember my first time fighting them, I was like "lol wtf" and then they ate my hero, so I was like "ZOMG wtf".

General wtf-ism was a constant factor throughout my experience of playing Heroes IV...

I have been following the discussions here casually, and several thoughts have struck me.

Having roaming beasts would create a bridge between Heroes 3/5 stationary "guards" and Heroes 4 mobile "wandering units", which is nice. I like the fact that the wandering aspect is limited only to the animals, i.e. none-cultural creatures.

I likewise like the idea of having animal units as neutral units, possibly with a relation to a specific terrain and/or faction. Thus, one could have wandering Bears in snowy terrain, specifically related to Fortress (Heroes 4 model of neutrals). This sort of makes the Neutral units have a point besides just being units that could not find a place elsewhere.

A problem would be finding suitable neutrals for all factions. Some come pretty easy (Sylvan - Wolf, Fortress - Bear, Stronghold - Vulture) whereas for others it's much more complicated (Haven? Inferno? Necropolis!?).

I guess he ment that no creature that is recruitabel in a town  should be a wandering creature.

Maybe: Sylvan: Stag not Wolf then Haven could have the wolfs. Inferno... hmm something dangerous that lives in volcanic regions? Fire-something? Maybe somekind of reptile...
Academy something deserty so Scorpions/giant scarabs?
Necro... gee thats a tough one maybe some slimy blob?
Dungeon... ok something evil that lives in the underground... ehhhhm also something lizardish?
