I went with a budgety RDW thing. Finished 7th out of 16, which is good enough to get the top 8 promo Cryptborn Horror.

Things I learned:
- Reckless Waif isn't very good in Constructed
- Brimstone Volley is actually rather ho-hum
- Hellrider is really awesome
- I really really need to complete my playset of Rakdos Cacklers
- Electrickery is an excellent sideboard card

I have a couple of questions about rules.

1# Do cards with the ability to reduce mana cost be used to cast cards with Overload cheaper?

In this case its ("Grand Arbiter Augustin IV" together with "Cyclone Rift")

2# Is it possible to interact with Annihilator from eldrazi.
To cast a destroy target creature in response to declaring an attack with an Eldrazi and its ability annihilate?

3# I'm guessing no, but i still want to know. Does Ghostly Prison and Propaganda affect planeswalkers? (I dont think they do, but i wanna know for sure)

Thanks for future replies ;P

Oh boy, you probably found your answers already, but since I finally noticed this post, I'll reply anyway!

1. Yes.
2. Once a creature with Annihilator attacks, the ability triggers. You can do stuff in response to the ability, but that won't stop it from resolving unless you counter the ability. If you want to keep it from triggering, you'll have to kill the creature before it attacks, for example during the Beginning of Combat step.

3. The cards don't mention planeswalkers, so your planeswalkers can still be attacked without the additional fee.

Hi, it's me again.  I have a situation here and I hope somebody here could help me understand this correctly.

I have a Kitchen Finks in play which already have a -1/-1 counter on it equipped with Swords of Light and Shadow and enchanted with Rancor. My opponent has a, let's just say, a plain Kjeldoran Marauder.

It's my turn and it starts here:

Declare Attackers
-I declared Kitchen -Finks as my attacker and tapped it.
-Opponent didn't respond.
-I didn't respond too.

Declare Blockers
-Opponent declared Kjeldoran Marauder as his blocker, blocking Kitchen Finks.
-I didn't respond.
-Opponent didn't respond too.

Combat Damage Step (This is where the problem really kicks in. I hope I did it correctly. )
-My Kitchen Finks trampled 3 damage to my opponent.  His Kjeldoran Marauder deals 3 damage to my Finks.
-Both creatures die.
-Rancor's second ability triggers.
-Swords of Light and Shadow abilities triggers.

And here is the question:
Would I be able to target Kitchen Finks as the creature to return from my graveyard to my hand in response to the equipment's ability?

My first instinct is that NO you would not be able to target the creature that just died.  Unfortunately I cannot think of any  specific arguments that justify this off the top of my head.

Sadly it's one of those situations where it's not obvious why it cannot.

I'm a L1 judge, I've got this!

By the time the triggered ability of Sword of Light and Shadow goes on the stack, Kitchen Finks is already in the graveyard and thus is a legal target. Yes, you can return it.

Thank you!

So can we say that in Combat Damage Step, damage is dealt to both creatures and players and creatures die.  And this all happen simultaneously?

Is there a more detailed explanation in this step?

In the Combat Damage Step, damage is assigned (according to the order chosen in Declare Blockers when applicable) and then simultaneously dealt to all the creatures and/or players that have been assigned damage. Then State-Based Actions are checked, resulting in all creatures with lethal damage to be destroyed. If any abilities have triggered, they are put on the stack. Then players get priority in APNAP (Active Player, Non-Active Player) order.

Is this detailed enough?

Here's everything there is to know about the Combat damage step: .

I'll be heading out this weekend to my very first Judge Conference and also my very first Grand Prix! I don't expect to do very well, but we hadn't had a Grand Prix in Poland since five years ago or so, so I'm seizing the opportunity to see such a big event up close!

The format is Standard. If anyone's interested, here's the decklist I'm planning to run:

21 Mountain

4 Rakdos Cackler
3 Stromkirk Noble
1 Legion Loyalist
4 Ash Zealot
4 Burning-Tree Emissary
3 Lightning Mauler
4 Boros Reckoner
3 Hellrider

4 Pillar of Flame
4 Searing Spear
3 Brimstone Volley
2 Blasphemous Act

Sideboard:
3 Burning Earth
3 Skullcrack
3 Traitorous Blood
3 Volcanic Strength
3 Rubblebelt Maaka

Well... I shall poke this thread, with Born of the Gods pre-release hitting the stores today. Anyone going? What are yer thoughts on the new set? What will you play in sealed?

As far as Standard goes, I am a little turned down with this set, all I see are buffs for Mono-Black (and maybe some tricks for Mono-Blue, but I doubt those will hold in high-tier tournaments), and basically very few cards that will see constructed play anytime soon.

Plus, where is my Izzet Temple? At least UW Control will get a smoother game now. I don't see my Grixis brew getting better anytime soon, maybe with Mogis on the board for a quicker clock.

PS: Grats, Wookie, for becoming a Judge! Hope this thread is not dead, I started playing Magic after about 10 years and it starts kicking in already.

Fun game. Quitted it when I started playing versus people with decks that were worth 1 000 + $.

My favorite deck was a 4 color reverse the sands deck. 2 white 6 colorless, redistribute every player s life total...

white for that card and fog of wars,
red for lightning bolts,
lots of green for getting all the various lands and creatures with mana which served as the colorless
some blue for a few counterspells.
some artifacts to get the right cards.

Take damage, let the other beat you until you re at 3 hp, reverse the sand, he has 3 hp, you 20, then lightning bolt. counter spell any specific card that can screw you up. Mana burn yourself down to 3 hp with all those lands 1 round before if necessary.

my second favorite deck was pure blue ; everyone hates counter spells so I reassured everyone that I had only 3 counter spells in my deck ; then my combo was to draw my whole deck in my hand and then play whatever was needed to win. haivng 50 cards in your hand is super good lol.

Hint : If you always trade smaller cards for 1 bigger because you want to build yourself a magic the gathering finance empire, just don't play the game at all and keep your cash in the bank instead.... God.

Got back from today's prerelease, heading out tomorrow to play in another.

I picked red for today, opened some goodies in red and green so went those colors. Finished 3-2, had lots of fun. Every time I played Snake of the Golden Grove (4/4 for 5 with upside? sign me up!), I said "I lay my giant snake on the table" like the immature kid that I apparently am. And then when my opponent thought about paying tribute, I asked if they'd like my giant snake to grow. Oh, the terrible, terrible jokes!

EDIT: So on Sunday I picked green, opened really good green cards but all the other colors were pretty ho-hum. Except black which had a bunch of solid removal, Whip of Erebos and two playable creatures. Sold! Went GB, finished 4-1 and went home with six boosters.

So out of the seven prize packs total (one from the random giveaways on Saturday), I pulled a Karametra, a GW temple, a Gild and... a foil Flame-Wreathed Phoenix. Woo!

So, I just found out the hard way that there is no such thing as a "lost and found objects" office in Romania for stuff you lose on a train.

Somehow I managed to forget my standard deck on my ride home, when coming from the pre-release (I have to travel a grand total of 6 hours to the nearest FNM-approved place and back, just to sleeve up some cards). While I usually have a gargantuan faith in Romania's stealing perks, I decided to go and check things out, maybe someone found something, because, hey, you never know.

Yes, we do have a specialized Police force that deals with various happenings on our train routes. No, they only deal with lost "papers". The policeman I talked to said, "if it was not a passport, things here get ~thrown away~". He actually emphasized the "thrown away" part with his fingers.

Of course, the fault was mine for actually forgetting that darned thing on the train, and that should teach me never to ride a train sober again, but still. The response I got from the police was dazzling, to say the least.
