Heroes 5: Temple of Ashan Weekly Tribes of the East Quiz

Notifying in advance - NO need to sign up! Just read the questions for the round (as many of them as are remaining) and join in!

Many days AND nights have passed since me and my friends presented the first unofficial quiz championship(tournament?) to the community last march.

The time has come to complete the unfinished, to present what will tie all the loose ends...

With a great many of you zealots eagerly rummaging through the last part of the Heroes of Might and Magic V saga, our accumulated enriched knowledge shall once more be used against you.

Thus, the word shall be heard and followed until thee(thou?) are once again exhausted and brainwashed.(brain-numb? )

Read thy rules, draw your fingers and join the maelstrom. I present you the SECOND round of Heroes of Might and Magic V Temple of Ashan Quiz: "The Tribes of the East (TotE [Not TOE ]) Quiz."

For those interested in participating, all you have to do is to follow the rules outlined below. Have fun participating, but before we get ON WITH this let me explain the rules.

As you CAN see they are assembled and sorted into several categories, BEING easier for me to relocate and update but also easier for you to NAVIGATE.

Use the search fuction in your browser to search the page for related keywords (Internet Explorer users press Ctrl+B, Firefox and other Netscape-based browsers - Ctrl+F).

Rules

Main Information

Golden Rules
Every one or two weeks (purely depending on the activity) a wave of questions will be posted in this thread. (Amount of questions posted will depend on our creativity and zeal.)

Participants will have to answer the questions provided and will receive points for questions answered correctly. The first to answer a question correctly will get the point, so (do not forget to) be fast and wary.

After the set of answers are fully answered, a new wave WILL BE posted in several days time. Some time prior to the quiz, the exact time will be announced. Only in most severe conditions punctuality will not be followed and the quiz will be delayed. The master post of the round will be updated every once in a while with the correct answers written in and answered questions crossed out.

New Style
This time around the quiz has undergone a few changes (and I present you the new version of it.)

The oldtimers will remember how the questions were posed randomly and most were caught unprepared. This brought about a distinction between the top participants of a rather huge amount points. Participants, as said already, will be notified in advance, the exact time of the quiz (including the hours) included in the post. Another, possibly a distinctive, feature is the categorization of the questions. When the questions are categorized, they will be sorted into several categories and a certain or a couple of them will be chosen for the round. This will limit the quiz round to a fixed array of questions, so people will know what to look after and prepare. The category will not be concrete, partly abstract, but will give you some hints on what to look for prior to the quiz (eg. campaign, strategy). Not all questions will be categorized, only every once in a while the participants, you, will receive an array of questions, with the categories being enlisted (some random questions will also be included).

Frequently Asked Questions

Round Time Limit
There is currently no time limit for a round. Some rounds have harder questions, some rounds have much easier questions, thus it is hard to guess when the round will end.

If a quiz takes too long to finish WITH only one or two remaining questions they will be moved on to the next wave. Usually the round lasts one or two days.

Posting Answers Simultaneously
Usually, at the start of every round people rush to answer a few questions and it happens that the answers are posted around the same time, with a minor 2 or 3 minute difference. Having learnt from the first round of the quiz that posting answers simultaneously can be abused (by no means am I saying that I found out it was), it is really hard for us to distinguish if only the one who managed to post the first or both are worth the points they would obtain if he (they) answered correctly. Following the golden rule, the righteous "owner" of the points is the one who managed to answer first, yet, as you may have noticed with the quiz prior to this one, it solely depends on roundmaster's good will and conscience.

Possibility to Answer the Questions Without Tribes of the East
Primarily intended to those that have studied the material scattered throughout the boards and various sites and that own Tribes of the East expansion. I am sorry, but, considering this quiz is derived from the expansion information, you may have difficulties answering most of the questions if you do not have the game. Some will not involve direct material from the expansion, some questions may be repetitive, thus you may find them in the old thread (hopefully that will happen purely coincidentally), thus there will be other ways to answer the question.

Q & A Example
Knowing it is not so difficult to understand what is what during the game, I do not feel the urge to give you an example of a question and an answer. I would rather give you a short example on how to answer them by looking here. Questions and answers are scattered throughout but I would recommend you to look at the final pages where a certain system of questioning is located. Mind you, this time some things are different as described in the rules section.

Tournament

Evaluation

Point System
Competition (or the tournament, as I like this word better) relies on the amount of questions answered correctly, thus, on the amount of points achieved. Each question is worth at the very least 1 point for some questions are simple and straight-forward. Questions requiring some more logic and a deeper explanation and definition or with more than one certain answer are worth more and can be awarded 2 or more points (though a greater amount than 2 will be really rare). There shall be a point limit per round as the amount of questions possible to answer will also have a certain limit, starting from half the questions posed.

Prizes
Although this was kept hidden the last time and no one really knew if prizes were present, this time I will take the risk of telling you in advance that working on the points' score is valuable for the attempts to answer, in-depth definitions and effort put into the competition may result in getting a shiny red star. Nevertheless, it is the fun that you should keep playing for. I will of course announce if the prizes are to change and something more serious and worthwhile is to be gotten.

Caretaker Team

Members
The caretaker team (as I have renamed the jury for it did not fit the concept of the competition and sounded lame altogether) remains the same, with the exclusion of Ma_trix until he expresses his utmost desire to join the jury or so-to-say we need his help and his knowledge within our ranks. I, TDL, Elvin, our everpresent poster and a newly-crowned moderator with his everlasting imagination, Alcibiades, everpresent moderator, sentinel of balance and ultimate fighter of spam in the Temple - this is the team we formed so long ago and it is us who will try to keep your mind occupied and fingers itching.

Join Us!
Never you were and no longer you are restricted to join us(, the caretaker team of the quiz).

We will be glad to accept new members once we see the quiz getting along nicely. Even without joining, any kind of help that proves to be useful is appreciated. Various questions (tougher ones are lovely), question-answer confirmations and double-checks OR proposals are accepted and I (even) encourage you to follow that route for every sign of kindness (won't be left unnoticed and you) will receive additional points (to go) towards your score( in the tournament).

The final scoreboard is here. As for now, the current results are:

ToEQ Questions: ROUND 1

Hello again everybody! This week I will be running the quiz and coordinating all the points to their righteous owners. Elvin and I have prepared the quiz this week so I hope we have created a quiz good enough to draw your attention. As listed above, you can try to answer HALF the questions, so pick the ones you think you know for real and you may not try to answer the same questions again. Read below for more (and no peeping!)

1. How can you prevent a friendly creature from retaliating after being hit?

2. What retaliation is the most damaging and by how much (excluding any hero skills and abilities)?

3. How to raise a living creature permanently with Raise Dead?

4. How can a War Machine be stunned?

5. Which artifact sets provide the hero with bonuses to racial skills and abilities?

6. How can your creatures attack an Arcane Crystal by making a melee attack and not damage themselves?

7. Under what circumstances having a huge stack of tier 1 creatures can be helpful?

8. Which hero perks have been changed in Tribes of the East (excluding racial)?

9. Which of the old spells that were not duplicated by Mark of the Wizard are now affected?

10. Who can cast the most spells in one round?

11. Which hero class has no unique secondary skill perks?

12. How can you get new creatures for your army without recruiting them, having specific hero skills or casting spells?

Answers:

1) With Mark of the Damned, when the attacking stack is killed by the hero prior to unit's retaliation.
2) Battle Griffin's or Warmonger's retaliation against a leaping Horned Grunt. The retaliation damage gets higher as the Griffin is attacked more often prior to Grunt's attack (1.5x each time attacked) while Warmongers get a constant 2x normal attack boost to retaliation strikes.
3) The creature to be raised must have had Vampirism cast upon it.
4) With Barbarian's Stunning Blow.
5) Lion's Spirit, Death's Embrace, Runeforce, Will of Urgash.
6) While attacking directly Imperial Griffins can attack the Crystal with Battle Dive; while attacking indirectly - dragons with Fire/Acid/Prismatic Breath, the swing of Untamed Cyclops, the Eye Beam of the Bloodeyed, Paokai's Lightning Strike, dwarven Storm and Flame Lords Stormstrike and Flamewave abilities, Champions with their Champion Charge, Brisk Riderīs Wheeling Attack (you might have listed more that we have missed, yet I had little time to check).
7) Apart from what so many might have enlisted as simple use for tier 1 creatures, the missing core part is that if the hero is Barbarian and has the Horde's Anger warcry, the amount of tier 1 creatures add up to a powerful direct damage dealer, thus the more of them, no matter how weak (consider unupgraded goblins xD), the better. Double that worth with witch doctors against magic factions.
8) Fire Resistance, Mana Burst, Corrupted Soil, Elemental Balance, Banish, Excruciating Strike, Weakening Strike, Familiar Ground, Arcane Intuition, Power of Speed, Power of Endurance, Spirit Link, Storm Wind, Stand Your Ground. (Clarification: Some issues have been sorted now. The actual four we had at first - Banish, Excruciating Strike, Weakening Strike, Familiar Ground. We had some errors to check, so the question was not finalized. Sorry.)
9) Area of Effect spells (fireball, stone spikes, etc.), Fire Trap.
10) Ranger, if (all) the opposing creatures are on 'favoured' list (with Rain of Arrows perk).
11) Warlock.
12) By collecting the full Power of Dragons set. The bonus for full artifact set is a free tier 7 creature daily. Otherwise, goblins may join you in attempt to flee when their numbers are lowered in battle (due to Treachery).

Scores for the Round:

Roy-algriffin - 3 Points
Daystar - 3 Points
Falkenstein - 3 Points
GenieLord - 1 Point
Mytical - 1 Point
Azagal - 1 Point
Vidoja - 1 Point

it is not divine vengeance because it is much better for enemies to destroy your high tier creatures than little ones, as effective it could be

and no, there is a trick with the creature question

i do not know but i may have forgot to outline that you may not try to answer the question again. unless you really want, hcm the quiz leader

Well, Sacrifices for one thing.  Either at the building, using Shamans/Cyclops, or in the various in-town buildings (Dungeon, Inferno, Slave Market)  Also, if you are a Necro you can convert them into Skelies, which can of course become Skeleton Archers, which are of course very valuable.

If you face a group of Orcs and the goblins start to fail they will join you!

6. How can your creatures attack an Arcane Crystal by making a melee attack and not damage themselves?

If a Dragon attacks a 1x1 creature adjacent to the Crystal the Fire Breath (or Acid or whatever) will hit the Crystal as well.  I'm not sure if this counts as Melee.  Alternatively if you attack and do not do any damage (because of spells and utter incompetance from a level 1) it will not be damaging.

Incomplete: The answer by itself that you gave us is simple, yet it is more truthful than roy-algriffin's (though under different circumstances, he would be right as well) but not enough. You must say the magic word.

Incomplete: D'oh! That is a possibility which I did not notice for which you are granted +1 point, but the question still remains unanswered fully.

12: Necromancy, Gating, The Devil's ability to summon up more troops, scripting.

6: The Thane's Axe thingy, Acid Blood (not really, but kindof), the Cyclops Eye thingy, Incinerate, if a lucky ghost(and upgrades) was incorporeal at the right point, Champion Charge, Lightning Breath, Prismatic Breath, the Griffin Upgrade's special ability, Paw strike pushing it away to prevent it dealing damage.

I don't know how many of these are right, but some might be.

7: Gremlin Repair, Vermin and their Mana Siphoning, Dryad to heal lots of Treants, Cannon Fodder, as well as previously stated reasons.

2. What retaliation is the most damaging and by how much (excluding any hero skills and abilities)?

The one of the Warmonger it deals twice the normal retaliatin damage.

Quote:
5. Which artifact sets provide the hero with bonuses to racial skills and abilities?
I'm not sure wheter you mean the bonus the set grants or the one the individual parts give (like the amulet of necromancy). I'll go with the set bonuses:
The Will of Urgash and Runeforce

Quote:
7. Under what circumstances having a huge stack of tier 1 creatures can be helpful?

Well there are plenty of situations...Here I go:
Stronghold: The more Witch Doctors you have the higher is the chance for the enemy caster not to have effect or have negative sideeffects occure (higher mana cost, reduced SP,etc.)
Academy: Gremlin Saboteurs can now paralize warmachines that are on the expert level
Master Gremlin: Can repair even more hp.
Dungeon: No really good use poison dmg for Assasins increases but who plays them any more?
Haven: the more Peasents/Brutes the more gold per day
Inferno: The more Familiar/Imps the more mana you suck from your opponent. The more Vermins the more mana if you activate his ability.
Sylvan: The more Drady the more healed Savage Treants.

Quote:
12. How can you get new creatures for your army without recruiting them, having specific hero skills or casting spells?
Battel Commander (Sylvan), Defend us all (Stronghold)

Maybe I'm stupid but what is a "unique secondary skill perk"? And what do you mean by hero perk?

1. How can you prevent a friendly creature from retaliating after being hit?
Use Goblins.  Or Puppet Mastered units (which are then considered friendly) do not retaliate.

4. How can a War Machine be stunned?

Gremlin Saboteurs (spelling?) Yeah I know it's had one answer, here is another

7. Under what circumstances having a huge stack of tier 1 creatures can be helpful?

Horde's Anger, Goblin Shammies Defile magic,

11. Which hero class has no unique secondary skill perks?

Wizard (wild stab in the dark because I don't understand the question)

12. How can you get new creatures for your army without recruiting them, having specific hero skills or casting spells?

No clue here.  Since external dwellings/diplomacy/'horde' buildings are all recruiting, and Recruiting (leadership skill), Defend us all, goblin support, ect are skills, and raise dead/ressurection/summon elemental (or phoenix) is spells.  Could be wolves special, but you don't get to keep those.

Just some adds:

1. How can you prevent a friendly creature from retaliating after being hit?

+ Vampire princes Torpor

12. How can you get new creatures for your army without recruiting them, having specific hero skills or casting spells?

+ If you fight goblins (Treachery ability) they will join you, and you'll be able to use them in future battles as well.
