Just got the game!
As I first thought, I liked the spacemarines most. Once I get the Dark crusade expansion however, I think I'll go for the Tau.
I just love their Mecha-style robotics.

Not sure who my favorite is... I really like the Necron and Imperial guard.  The Necron for their endurance and the Imperial Guard for their vehicles.  It pretty much depends on my mood as to which is my favorite.  Probably my least favorites would be the Orks and Eldar.  While the Orks add a lot of humor, they just feel really tedious for some reason.  The Eldar are even worse than the Orks, require quite a bit of micro-management.

I thought that micro-management is one of the main things about real time strategy games

What I like most about Warhammer 40k is that there are no good guys. You only choose between lesser and greater evil Of sorts.

I mean, the "goodliest" races are Space Marines (who are racist, chauvinist fanatical homicidal maniacs), the Imperial Guard (who are also racists, who shoot their own people if they show signs of free speech and instill a campaign of fear and terror among everyone, be it their soldiers or enemies), the Tau (ruthless colonial imperialists who send both their people and some semi-barbarians whom they consider lower beings to fight in order to put anything they can under their rule) and the Eldar (who are probably the goodliest of the bunch, they're just tricky, manipulative bastards who won't stop at anything to achieve their goals, whatever they may be, and who are so peaceful that they worship Khaine, a brutal war-god whose avatar they summon to slaughter anyone opposing them).

And don't get me started with the bad guys Some want to rape, pillage and kill anything that gets in their way (Orks), some want to exterminate every form of life in existence (Necrons), and some are... some are...
...
Can't even define Chaos really They're just... evil. That's what they do

Chaos is at least the most honest of them all. They're simply openly and undeniably evil ^^ At least you know what to expect from them.

I'd say the Orks are the more honest than Chaos.  All the Orks want is a good fight, so you always know where they are coming from, so to speak.

This game has proven that even 3,5 years after release, you can make expansions.. Bad thing heroes don't follow that scheme as it would suit it well.

A meta-campaign would be a cool way to approach heroes, even though it would be difficult to implement.  But we are getting off topic.

To get back on topic, in the new expansion, each race has a certain bonus to draw from at the start of the game that you can get for yourself by taking their stronghold.  For example, the Sisters of Battle have a forward base ability, while the Tau have this weird cannon attack that allows them to kill some of the garrisoned units in the colony you are attacking.

How good is the game actually balanced?
I mean every town has it own specialisation so to say right? Chaos would be melee, Tau range, Imperial Army Numbers and/or vehicles, Eldar ...ehm... casting?? Necro durability and ehm don't know about the rest.

Gothca.  After a few patches, the game has been balanced quite well in my opinion.  The CPU does make some bone-head moves on normal difficulty, but that's to be expected.  For the price, I strongly recommend picking Dark Crusade up.

Oh so you wouldn't wait till there'll be some "Dawn of War: Collection" box or something? I thougth that I would save some money if I'd wait for Soulstorm to arrive an then get all the other editions with them.

There is already one.  It just doesn't include Soulstorm.

Dawn of War and Winter Assault's campaigns are linear.  Dawn follows the Blood Ravens and their endeavors, while Winter Assault allows you to play as the Imperial Guard & Eldar or Chaos & Orks. Dark Crusade and Soulstorm have meta campaigns, so you pick a race and duke it out.

You don't need the previous games for Dark Crusade or Soulstorm for the single player.  If you want to play the races in multiplayer, you will need the older games.  Here's how it breaks down:

Dawn of War gives you (in multiplayer): Chaos, Orks, Eldar, Space Marines.
Winter Assault adds:  Imperial Guard
Dark Crusade adds:  Tau, Necron
Soulstorm will add:  Sisters of Battle, Dark Eldar.

So if you have all of them, you'll be able to play any of the 9 races in multiplayer.

Well I will most certainly not need all 9 races in multiplayer... Hmm so that would technically mean that I only need Dawn of War + Dark Crusade (in order to play both Tau and Chaos in multiplayer). Hmm I'll just go arround looking for what I find either I'll buy DOW+Dark Crusade or I'll buy a nice platinum pack if it comes along but things are not allways that easy down here in japan. Thanks for the explanation.

Now I have Dark crusade, and I thought we might as well turn this into a strategy thread. So here's my Tau strategy:

1.
I build 2-3 stealthsuits depending on the map and order my Builder to start on a barracks and a plasma generator. While the stealthsuits do their job capturing strategic points I build the Tau commander and outfit him with the flamer. Always have the flamer, always. It proves invaluable when facing a quick orc/eldar assault. Watch out for cultists/guardians when capping strategic points as they can disable your stealthsuits invisibility. I build 2 Firewarrior squads, and attack the enemy base with them and the Tau commander. The Tau commander's snare trap is effective as it lowers the enemy's speed extremly. Use it wisely in early game however, as it drains your power. As my army now is a heavily ranged one, I build the Kauyon post to upgrade them with Metallurgy and the range upgrade. After that I either choose to focus on vehicles (Skyrays) or the extremly potent Krootox.

2.
My second strategy focuses on stealthsuits and Vespids. I do the usual thing, capping strategic points. Then I either build the Barracks or the Kroot nest as I need to have one of them to build the Vespids. As soon as I get them I assault the enemy base, their special ability destroys plasma generators and Listening posts quickly and severly hurts your enemy's economy. Be sure to upgrade the jetpack skill, as the Vespids gets the ability to make short flights. I'm careful with the Vespids however, as they're not good at attacking squads. The best thing to do is to reinfroce them with Kroot carnivores or Fire warriors. Once all the important buildings have been built, I make several fully reinforced and upgraded Stealthsuit squads. I then assault the enemy base with them and the Vespids, watch out for turrets and other detectors.

These are my favourite strategies, I've gotten a lot of help from the Relic forums as you may have noticed.

Azagal if you want to save money you can buy simply Dark Crusade.
This will allow you to play the most recent game (so no problems finding a multiplayer game) but with only 2 races- Necrons and Tau.

When the new one comes out you can add that on as well to have 4 races total and the most recent version of the game.

Also if memory serves you can tone down the blood/gore in the options.

On a side note:
What is your favourite race?
Mine used to be Eldar... in Quickstart (the more fun version of multiplayer IMO... less serious than Standard) they used to own in Winter Assault. Just spam portals
Then they got nerfed pretty hard in Dark Crusade with just about every other race except Orks who used to suck but then got boosted.

I also love the look of Tau and their mobile artillery units are my favourite unit in the game

Man this brings back lots of memories
Eldar trying  to tech to Avatar ASAP in order to get 9 Fire Prisms and be unstoppable...
Chaos getting 100% of your squads as Possessed and rushing straight passed their defences and taking out their HQ and crippling them...
Space Marines teching ASAP to Orbital to drop in Terminators and a Commander and bombarding their HQ...

Those were all I played really.
I guess it was kind of unbalanced but if you could pull it off in a multiplayer game it got really hectic. Games would go for hours.
Though every one of my favourite tactics of those got slaughtered with Dark Crusade.

Quite an old game now but still fun. I will probably buy Soulstorm anyway just to see what it's like.
