Are PC games going to die out?

I saw this article here on IGN  Linky,
And it talked quite a bit at some points about the fear that Massively multiplayer online games and consoles are by far going to reduce the amount of games made for the PC, As you may know if youve played an MMO you ussually play it for some time, sometimes even years and then you sort of burn out and never return to the game and never really feel like playing an MMO again as its consumed too much time in your life.

The fact is that a lot of good gaming companies are focusing on consoles, Theyre generally more reliale, require less money in the short term (in the long term they cost more as you have to keep switching consoles and the games are often more expensive) and soon may even have strategy games on them, Whiles its not likely to succeed if it does then the last bastion of PC-only games will be moved to consoles as well .

Now how does this affect us? Well i guess its important to note that developers do care a lot about money, And consoles are a big hit right now. Most cant claim to be making MMOs to try and steal some people from playing World of warcraft, But those who are invest much time and money in it. So it results in a lot of other , more simple games not being made, and that along with consoles will damage the PC market.

My belief is that as MMOs start to bore people, They will go for consoles for a change of pace from a PC. If they stick there or not is more their choice. Are PC games dying out then? Sales from retail stores seem to be except for WOW, Downlaods may be replacing those though, But it seems pretty certain unless something reveloutionizes the PC that they will decline since the vast majority of gamers are just people who like to point guns at others and a console does that perfectly well.

A shining hope was that vista and DX10 would be graphically amazing, But it seems more a disappointment then anything. Some are so angry about it they are in fact moving back to XP and that can make you see why people use consoles. However consoles will always be graphically outdated by the PC. However the Wii shows that theres more then reliability and cheap graphics to a console.

Anyway , Do you think PC games are dying, To be replaced by many varied consoles? It certainly seems like the low-cost soloution and they have a very good reputation at the moment. I personally think that they can never e properly replaced . A computer will always be a step ahead , and its more comftorable to sit on the comfy chair to boot!

Actually, there were discussions like these when the Playstation, Xbox and many other consoles were created. There is always some Pcgames-Doomsday-prophet saying: "This is the end for Pc-games!". Well, they did'nt die out, and i doubt that it will be different this time. My vision of Pcgames can be a bit stange ofcourse, since I live in Sweden which is one of the few countries where pc games sell as good as console games

PC games have one advantage that console games don't have: Ease of modding.  Without a lot of work, special cables, particular programs and a bit of rule-bending you can't mod a console game, where as many computer games can be modded with a .zip extractor and notepad.  I bet that in 10-20 years there will be easier modding/map making for Console games, but computer games are several decades ahead.

I wouldn't say with just notepad and .zip archives lol.

It requires MANY other things than just that.

I will say that the BASIC modding comes from notepad.

For more expert and advanced stuff there are many programs that will allow you to do stuff.

Hex editing can be a good example.

Probably the biggest difference between PC and the consoles is the uses. Consoles are strictly for games while PC can be used for, well, almost anything - news updates, trading, doing your job/homework. If I already have a PC at home for various needs and I face before a choice - upgrade my PC a bit to be able to run games or buy a console, I'll go with the former option.

Console development may slow down PC games industry, but I doubt it can destroy it.

Yeah but what might seriously cripple PC gaming is the fact that many developers move to consoles because more people like them. In the years to come less outstanding games will come out for PCs im guessing,Maybe even to the point of crippling the industry.  But for the most part i think that PCs will stay.

Personally, what I feel to be the problem with PC games in general, is that most of them are going in the way of the console games. Shiny graphics and simple concepts have become the focus. The main concept is to sell as many copies possible, in the shortest time and it doesn't matter if the product is crappy.

For example hardly any RPG game in the past few years has been able to satisfy me. Hack and slash clones, hardly differing from each other(except for a few exceptions as KOTOR or Oblivion). Honestly I long for the days of Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale.

A similair situation is with strategies, most of them set on the same RTS principle or just copying the concept of eachother.

MMO games, I do not play and very well know why.

PC games have been going down hill in the past years and consoles are far mor comfortable and more accessible for the average gamer/consumer. If PC games want to live on, the market has to change it's strategy.

I've never played a console game and probably never will. I've never even watched one being played except for maybe 5 seconds as I passed a demo in a store. And there's not a single console that I could identify by sight without reading the name.

Bottom line is that there will always be people who will only buy PC games. It's simple supply and demand. The supply for PC games may decrease, but that means the demand for the ones that are left will increase. So it will equalize. As long as there is a profit in it, the games will be made.

If all the big names get out of the business, it will go back to the way it was 20-30 years ago. Somebody working at home will write a game as shareware, it becomes popular, the person writes more games, and the cycle starts over.

To be hoenst though, Do you know any good PC games coming out this or next year?
Theres empire total war, kanes wrath and hopefully Kings bounty legends, A few others may be interesting too that ive forgotten. But theres very few high-profile games coming out it seems.  that is, Ignoring First person shooters and adventure/action games. Which im not sure if any really interesting games are coming out for either.

Nothing High Profile?  Have you heard of Spore?  Its an RPG, Sim City, God Game, Pac Man and Age of Empires all in one game, and the programing of the game means that it is utterly impossible to play the same way twice, even if you tried.  Its being developed by the guy who made the Sims, and it will be utter pwnage on all other games.

It sounds good. But its one of few . And i think it may end up like bioshock- A lot of hype but in the end after a few days its collecting dust on the shelf.  Againt though, Apart from the aforementioned and barring some hopeful action/adventure games ( and theres not many of those either i expect, I just dont look at them as much ) The main thing for the computer which is strategy , is looking kind of poor for the future.  No first person shooter which isnt surpassed by the expectations for one on a consoles.

Man I feel old.

I don't know about the rest of you but for me PC games aren't all about new games.  I just hate how a lot of new games focus on graphics and suck game play and story wise.

I still play Heroes 3 after all and how old is that?!  Actually what really annoys me more is when they try to do a new game in a series and seriously mess it up...*cough* heroes 4and5.  Also reminds me of the crappy sequel to Chrono Trigger, which was a GREAT game, Chrono Cross, which sucked BIG time.

I would like to know how many people play games that are at least 3 years or older?  I think all the games that i am playing at the moment fit that description.  And even if I get a new game i like the fact i'm able to go back and play them still, not a feature that always works with consoles.

The future is always about new things, Good or bad. But its been said before. Good games will be developed when the graphics barrier is hit and the games graphics become best as they can be . Which will result in good gameplay. Despite that no matter how persistent you are, will you play heroes 3 and those old games 5 yaers later? 10 years? You cant forever(well technically you can, but youd be boring yourself) Its always about the future and the games that will come out.
The video games industry is moving so fast. The quetion right now is if computer games are too.

I do, and some of them are much older than that. In many types of games graphics really doesn't matter (strategies, puzzles..) and the gameplay really rocked. However, that doesn't mean that I discard new dames just because that put so much emphasis on graphics.

I do. They appeal to me as they have in the past. Just to name a few:

StarCraft (1998 - almost 10 years old !)
Unreal Tournament - nearly 8 years old
BG 2 and Diablo 2 (from time to time) - both older than 6 years
WarCraft 3 is older than 3 years (so does frozen Throne expansion)
Emperor: battle for Dune (recently) - 6 years old.

Yet I also play new ones, just to name expansion to NWN 2 - Mask of the Betrayer.

I think all the ones I play are over 3 years old. Some are probably over 10 years old - but I'd have to check the dates to be sure.

I just looked at my list of games and there are 20 games over 3 years old that I still play sometimes. Betrayal at Krondor might be the oldest game I still play sometimes - not sure when it came out.

There's also a game that is over 30 years old that I never finished and I want to get back to it.

It's an old text based game simply called "Adventure". I originally played it on an old 6800 computer with one of those fancy new things called a monitor.

Now it's been compiled for X86. I have it around somewhere, but never tried it on PC.

I agree with you 100% here.

Nice to know that other people think like me and dislike how all these new games focus wayyyyyyyy too much on the graphics but miss out on what the game really should be

EDIT: btw could this be moved to the appropriate forum? I don't see how this has to do with the OSM. This is about games, therefore it is more suited towards Other Games, right?
