What I said was "500 years from now, there wont be any religious Jewish-Muslim conflict because those religions themselves will be less influential to the point of insignificant."
That's what I disagree with, the certainty of that statement which kind of reminds me of the "end of the civilizations" predictions after the collapse of the USSR. You base this belief on what? These religions are millennia old and only the Christianity has given some ground to secularization throughout the past few centuries, though I certainly wouldn't go as far as to claim that this is done and done and can't be reversed to some extent. Conservatism thrives in environments where life is difficult and future is uncertain and it would be way too pink-glassed to claim that informational technologies or scientific advancements or whatever progressive thing you can imagine will create one flat, prosperous landscape in 500 years where people won't fight over old-school ideological bull****. Even your Erdogan sort of disproves your point with his existence as an important political figure today, Islamization should not be happening in a society which has been following a more or less secular road for several decades, no? Forget about Turkey though, take Iran or even Russia and Poland - religions play more important role in their societies now than they did 40 years ago. In pretty much all cases where you have some "return to the roots" you also have some sort of social turmoil so I'd agree with you only if you prove that the causes for it will disappear over time.

Erdogan wouldn't refute my point because despite the Islamist movement in Turkey, there are still more people who are openly non-religious compared to 50 years ago, young couples kiss on TV shows while in 50's, 60's cinema, you don't even see married couples kiss, they only touch cheeks, atheist intellectuals are more straightfoward about it although they are not invited to mainstream media etc... Erdogan is the result of people whose parents in the mid 20th century, didn't even imagine they could be politically represented. And of course, when they start to have that notion, they won't start by being sympathetic to what had been forced upon them. But Erdogan's party is still the moderate sect of a much more conservative party from the 1990's which had been closed down by the military many times those days.

But just forget Turkey, which has already been a secular state since 1937, as an example, watch this from Egypt. In a way, it's obnoxious, I mean, they actually try to "tag" the atheists in the country (we have 866 of them, it's spreading like wildfire!), the woman who's the host is disrespectful and certainly unable to discuss in a civilized manner. But 100 years ago, she wouldn't be able to host anything, put aside hosting it dressed like that and to even try to pretend (because they don't really discuss) calling an atheist to a TV show to "oppose ideas" would be unthinkable: Link or look this from Kuwait.

i guess this is the appropriate thread, since i can't find a thread titled just "terrorism". so, this guy shoots at a cop, trying to kill him, and when questioned, claims he did it for the islamic state.

and yet, he wasn't charged with a terrorist act?

Quote:
Man gets extended sentence for ambush shooting of Philadelphia officer

PHILADELPHIA — A man convicted of ambushing a Philadelphia police officer with a hail of gunfire in the name of the Islamic State group has been sentenced to several decades in prison.

Edward Archer was ordered Monday to serve 48½ to 97 years.

A jury convicted Archer in February of attempted murder, aggravated assault and other charges stemming from the January 2016 shooting of Officer Jesse Hartnett in his patrol car.

Hartnett, who returned fire, spent two weeks hospitalized. His arm was broken, and he suffered nerve damage.

When questioned by police, Archer repeatedly pledged his allegiance to the Islamic State and said he acted out of religious inspiration.

But authorities have said there's no indication he coordinated the attack with a terrorist organization. He also wasn't charged with a terrorism-related offense.

clickity doo-dah

i apologize beforehand if there is a better thread(and i'll move this there if so). i couldn't find one.
