Actually, the character has a lot of potential, and is a nice amount of comic relief. 
Besides, your character hates chickens...what have chickens ever done to you?

I'd have no time to shop either. Though, that hardly matters since I have nothing to buy things with anyway.(unless I sold stuff, which I'd rather not do)

You could abandon the good-guy approach to life and just take what you want. Seems to work for Mordock and the mutts. Just be careful of the chickens...

Well unless you are playing a character that is a 'city slicker' in those days most people come prepaired. This is why D&D come up with the concept of 'standard starting equipment'. Which all characters of all classes would have (unless of course they had never been out of a city in their whole life). These were.
Bedroll
Tent
Some food
50' rope
Backpack
Blanket (ok it's actually a fur, but passes as a blanket. to avoid fleas you might want to 'buy' another)
torches
lantern
flint and tender
this was paid for before your 'starting gold' was calculated. However, Mathew has you covered if you don't have this. Watch and see .
