This isn't very long as I've had other things to worry about, but it's another Sandro monologue.  It takes place in Castle Navekleth, Sandro's last fortress in Deyja, directly before his defeat at the end of the "Unholy Alliance" campaign in Heroes III: The Shadow of Death.

CHAPTER 12:  DEFEAT

There I sat in Castle Gloaming, having conjured a Dimension Door to seperate myself from the smoking ruins of my last freehold on the border.  It didn't matter that the AvLeeans and Krewlish allies had pushed me back this far.  I had never even really intended to fight back, awaiting an opportune moment for an ambush.

For that is my nature.  I live in the moment... though I am not alive at all.

I grasped the Sone Crystal, peering through its reflective surface to watch the events transpiring in Castle Navekleth, through a second well-placed Crystal.  Crag Hack, Yog and Gem stood in my chambers, obviously searching for me.  Their problem, not mine.  I had left the unholy artifacts behind for a reason, and was about to make it known.

Right on cue, the three "heroes" finished their little deliberation.  Yog and Gem departed, turning down opposite ends of the hallway to continue their raid as Crag Hack stayed behind to try and track me.  As he stood alone, puzzled, my voice emanated from the Sone Crystal upon my desk.  My vision was now merged with that of this second Crystal, and I could see the brute exceptionally clearly.

"Greetings, Mister Hack.  Thank you for the services you rendered earlier; unfortunately your luck has ran out here."

My sinister tone made him jump.  Visibly worried and furious at the same time, he peered into the Crystal, a look of raw bloodlust on his helmed face.

"We had a deal, Necromancer.  And you chose to turn back on it.  You beady-eyed snake!" he spat.

The simple-minded fool still assumed I was going to give him his fictional land and title... forgetting that he had originally believed me a Wizard.

"It was not a matter of chance, Mr. Hack.  It was simply a matter of time before you'd hunt me down, wasn't it?" I sneered at the hulking Barbarian.

Clearly puzzled though still indignant, the lumbering Crag Hack paused, battleaxe in hand.  "Yeah, and your time is up!  Surrender those artifacts or I'll smash your skull into dust, just as I promised."

So, he had inadvertently given me a choice.  I glared in disgust at his idiocy before responding.  "You present me with choice, Mr. Hack?  You would allow me to escape, allow all the troubles of this continent to soar out of your grasp, in exchange for a few trifles I no longer even require?"

The half-lie flustered him.  I knew it would.  Though the Cloak of the Undead King and the Armour of the Damned were my keys to success, they had already lost their original alluring presence.  No longer did I revel in the sorcery wrought from shaping a mangled corpse into a Power Lich, no more did the ease of turning my opponents into festering wretches appeal.  Besides, I had already amassed a horde of Liches in the northern borderlands.  There was no real need for these tokens any longer.

My eyes gestured to the unholy artifacts.  "Take them," I said.  "I know when I'm cornered."  Without looking away, he began edging towards the Armour of the Damned.

"Yes.  Very good, you dog," I mocked him.

"ARRRRRGGGGGHHHH!" he bellowed at the insult, driving his axe down into the Sone Crystal.  I had sent him over the edge there.  What a moron, I noted as my vision within Castle Navekleth suddenly died out to be replaced with that of Castle Gloaming.  Good luck to him proving our little conversation to his friends without the crystal, I spat.

"Idiots," I grumbled aloud.  It never occured to me that perhaps they were not alone in their stupidity.

------------------

It was almost a week later when Lord Haart contacted me again via the Sone Crystal.

"Four heroes have taken the borderlands and my artifacts," I told him.  "We'll be unable to invade Erathia directly."

"There is another option," he explained after a moment or two of careful thought.  "Were King Nicolas Gryphonheart to fall, Erathia's political command would instantly be assumed by the bumbling Royal Erathian Military Command.  Gryphonheart's death would be a practical invitation for an invasion from Tatalia, Krewlod and perhaps AvLee.  If we could organise an alliance with the Overlords and the Kreegans, six countries could tear Erathia at the seams all at once.  With three of those countries under your control, subjugating the others would be easy.  The continent could be ours in a year's time."

We mulled over the plot in silence for a few moments.

"Assassination will be our only option, then.  I'm sorry to endanger your reputation like this," I lied.

"It doesn't matter.  My loyalty lies with the Brotherhood now," he coldly stated.  "King Gryphonheart will die this year by my hand.  But we'll need to formulate a plan."

"Poison," I immediately uttered.  "The bile of Gorgons mixed with the innards of a Zombie can concoct a foul mixture which no living wizard could lay claim to.  With the presence of Gorgon bile, they will consider a Tatalian plot for revenge, from their eons of oppression long years past.  Then they'll discover what they believe to be Manticore venom and bring Nighon into the ream of suspects.  Perhaps they'll even be stupid enough to consider the AvLeeans after they uncover the essence of Tularean wildweed.  But finally they will learn that Necromancers have had a hand in this.  By then it shall be too late."

"You'll have to bring this vial to me," he responded.  "I can't be seen traipsing around Deyja for such a purpose.  Gather a force and invade my patrol route, capturing my castle.  Plant the vial within and I'll mysteriously show up to rout your armies.  Then you can regroup once outside our garrisons.  Rebuilding your forces shouldn't be a problem."

"Not to mention the legions I've amassed at the border.  Nothing can stand up to their might.  We could have conquered the world with them, had the artifacts not fallen!"

"Legions?" He sounded puzzled.  "A white-skinned Elf from Erathia chased a huge horde of Liches out of the Deyjan borderlands with a massive army guided by a golden weapon - the Angelic Alliance, they called it.  Over a thousand of them were slain during the escape, and the rest are under attack in the Contested Lands."

"The... Angelic Alliance?" I spoke with clear anxiety in my voice.  I had learned more of that sword.  Said to have been originally forged from the essence of Paradise, it had emerged below the earth during Erathia's early days and was enshrined in Steadwick after the conquest of the Underworld.  The last I had read of it, Duke Winston Boragus had bargained it out of Erathia in exchange for services rendered in some forgotten war centuries ago.  I had never considered Yog's allegiance to the Duke.  And that was where Gelu had been.  He was chasing my forces to Erathia.  I had forgotten the damned sword!  I had left a gaping hole in my plots!

"Yes, the golden blade of antiquity," responded Lord Haart's visage.  "Those legions have been scattered to the winds.  Nicolas Gryphonheart's Talon Brigade recruits are purging their remnants from Erathian soil as we speak."

I cursed the names of my enemies a thousand times each before dropping to my knees and laughing a maniacal laugh.

------------------

As per the agreement, Lord Haart had recently left for maneuvers farther into Erathian territory.  He had taken most of the knights and clerics with him but left a few to guard the castles.  I decided it would be best to send out scouts and find out exactly what forces he left behind.

Soon I found that Lord Haart had decided to play a little nastier than I anticipated.  He had left four capable heroes to guard his castles.  The pompous prig!  This would make things harder, not to mention the troops he reinforced the garrison with.  Now I would have to go through them too.  But this did not hinder my plans.  Once on the Erathian side, I would be free to reap the precious peasants who do his farming and menial chores.  To me, they were skeletons that just didn't know it yet.

Five days later, I wrote a report to Finneas.  So far the campaign was going well.  Plenty of creatures fought tooth and nail only to become skeletons, and the towns were beginning to shape up into some fine cities.  Confident that this little excursion should go as smoothly as I planned, I sent out messengers to both the Dungeon Overlords and the Kreegans.  They should not miss out on our plan to take over Erathia.  After all, they too had some brute strength that could be used as cover.  The plans continued swiftly as we progressed further into Lord Haart's lands.

Mulling over the events of the past and looking towards the future, I slowly sipped an exquisite goblet of wine.  My lips would haved curled into a snide smile - if I had had any left, that is.  Life without flesh was quite comfortable, actually.  I didn't worry about mosquito bites, foot blisters or coarse sheets.  Many discomforts such as cold and heat were no longer a concern, and it was such bliss to be oblivious to the foul stench of sweating, working fools.  The aroma of death, dry and comfortable, surrounded me like a warm shroud.

Pulling my thoughts back to the plan shattered by foolish twits, I abruptly grasped the goblet and hurled it towards the wall, sending blood-red liquid splattering.  My rage towards Crag Hack, Gem, Yog and that snippet Gelu was not easy to control.  Who would have thought two Barbarians would suddenly develop a conscience?  Not to mention a boy ranger and a foreign druid actually gathering together the resources to build an army large enough to defeat mine!

I slowly calmed myself with the realisation that these oversights no longer mattered.  The King would die and it would be by the hand of one of his own.  The thought warmed my frigid soul and fuelled the fire throughout the night.

And then the dark guilt infected me.

Resting peacefully is never an option for the undead.  Each night I was plagued with horrifyingly real dreams.  It is said of the undead that if you die in such a nightmare, you die permanently.  Knowing the power of the mind and the frailty of a body without a soul securely attached, I took no chances.  I kept a Zombie guard in my room to wake me periodically.  For the most part, this tactic worked.

The nightmare began as usual.  Ethric was chasing me, waving his sword like the lunatic he was.  Screaming battle cries, he rushed headlong forward, threatening to overtake and kill me.  There was no doubt in my mind that this Warlock would rip my head from your shoulders and use it to play kickball.  He was mad, insane with jealousy and unable to control the power he already had.  His screaming turned to a maddening chanting and lightning ripped from his hands, searing my tender flesh and throwing me to the ground.

Bony hands shook me before I died in the dream.  "I'm sorry, sir," the Zombie apologised.  "I was just waking you as you ordered."  Shaking, I spent the rest of the night pouring over rosters...

Whispers in the darkness hinted at things just out of sight and around the corner.  I was moving through dark forests with only the moonlight to guide my path.  My horse stumbled, whinnying as I went down.  Pinned, I attempted to scramble out from under the dying thoroughbred when a shadow fell over me.  It was the blue-faced Barbarian, the one who had studied in Bracada.

This genie was not to be toyed with even though a Barbarian, for he was a cunning and quick-witted foe.  He stood on my sword hand, crushing it.  With the pain empowering me, I shoved the dead horse off my body and scrambled down the path.  Tripping, I landed face first and rolled down an embankment.  Yog greeted me at the bottom.  The relentless Barbarian picked me up by my cloak, which somehow turned into bed sheets.

It was my loyal Zombie, not Yog, who was rousing me.  But even ten days later the dark guilt did not recede.

There was no escaping this nightmare.  Once again I was in the shadowy forest, this time fleeing the barbaric genie.  He was a skillful hunter and even more determined than Crag Hack to get his pay.

An arrow sliced through my foot, rooting me to the ground.  I saw the shadows stir and out stepped the white-skinned, red-haired Ranger with the strange bow.  He swiftly put more arrows into my body before taking careful aim at my skull with the final shaft.

Suddenly, I began falling into an opening in the ground.  Making a last, desperate grab at a hand extended toward me, I materialised safely in my bed.  But the hand I was clutching was not that of my guard - the Zombie's arms had finally come apart after rescuing me from the deadly dream so many times.  No, a commander who happened to walk past my tent and hear my distress saved me.

I cursed softly.  If not for happenstance, I would have died.  I vowed that I would not risk sleep again.

Darkness Rising

The dark is rising, I can hear its call
There is nobody to catch me should I fall
Shades of lonelyness are all around
with no glimmer of light to be found
Looking for meaning in a barren place
Hiding the tears that flow down my face
My heart is breaking, but none can see
For the person in the mirror is not me
The dark has claimed me, there is nowhere to turn
No outlet for the passion that once did burn
Now it smolders, soon it will be no more
Smothered in the shadow that consumes my core.

Episode 5: the beginning of the FINAL!

Now all we have to do is to bring one of the eliminated competitors back and start the final...
Well, all the cards of the eliminated competitors are burnt (very well burnt ).
All I have is a pile of ash. I can bring back a competitor, but how can I bring back a card?

I'll have to use the broom to gather the ash!

TADAM!

As you can see, we raised William from the dead eliminated, straight to the final!

On the next episode, the winner will be declared.
It's DAYSTAR vs BAKALA vs WILLIAM!

Goodluck.
This time, may the greatest talent win.
