Well, a silence will stop it from posting again with the same user name for as long as the silence lasts. So it may help in case you are having the same bot user name post again and again.
I guess the way forums usually handles bots like these ones is to have a confirmation text in a picture which must be typed in with the normal password. Since the bots cannot read the letters and digits in the text it will fail logging in/registering the user name.

If they are all posting from the same IP address, then couldn't an IP ban work so that they stop posting? That might not work if they are posting from separate IP addresses though...

Well its not correct,bots will post just once with the username..they programmed to use proxys ips,multplay users.. i think authetication and secuirty code is the only answer...
