Correction: two beasts. I was thinking of the hellhound Garm. Sorry. And yes, there are some creaturs that fit, but a lot of them just either do not fit in with the Heroes V Dwarves or just aren't exciting enough to make (I mean how exciting is a deer?) However, there are some that could make it.

Garm, Fenrir, Jormundgand, Surt (and other Muspili), Trolls, the Norns, Sleipnir, Gleipnir, Thor's two boars, Freya's goats (i thinks its freya)

However, Valkyries, Giants, and Einherjar are too humanoid. Plus, females don't fit in the fortress (valks).

Have you read Fire Bringer?

the Norns

were three women, who you said would not fit in.

Surtr was a Giant (Well, a fire giant) and the Muspili was a bit of poetry...while I like the idea of war poetry I don't think it fits into Heroes VI.

Muspili were those who dwell in Muspellheim, land of flames. And I thought of the norns kinda like (I can't believe i'm saying this) the Fates off Hercules. So, maybe women, but not...Hey, Necropolis creatures "The Fates" Oops, got off track, so now the Norns were like the gods, not human but not immortal; superhuman. So, I may have said women wouldn't fit in, I kinda half-***ed that. I meant human women wouldn't fit.

personally i feel a mix of the 2 systems would be best. Most towns having a core race but it usually only having a few units of the race.

The way i feel the towns should be are.

Haven-Almost has to be centered around lots of human units cause its always been that i wouldn't argue if they brought it more beasts though.

Stronghold; Sylvan; Dwarven Fortress; Dark Elf town; Swampy lizard town- I feel these work best with around 3 of their main race (Such as Sylvan and Dungeon now) Possibly 2 in some cases. I believe there are more Nordic or snowy mountain based myth creatures that could fit with the Dwarves

Necro; inferno- These should stay as they are as kind of semi race based with the creatures sharing away of being.

Academy; Dungeon- Should be like the Academy that there is now where it is mainly beasts commanded by powerful wizards warlocks or overlords.

@Muspeli: Oh, right.   And read the book I linked.

Actually, it would be interesting to have a Necro creature/Hero that would be a representation of the fates/norns.

Please, the fact that we know elves traditionally as archers does not mean that melee warriors are a new concept. In both D&D and Tolkien's world and I'm sure many others you will see elven swordsmen. Now whether they use twin swords or not that's another case.

I'm talking about stereotypical elves and dwarves When someone says "ELF!" First thing I think about is "Bow and arrow!" Again, I don't deny the existance of various roles in non-human races, just that the places in the lineup are taken where some interesting mythological creature could have been placed that would actually add to the world itself.

There's the thing: The Dwarves had already been mentioned, and, therefore, had to be made to fill the storyline vacuum, since emissaries were sent out in hope's to assist Isabel in her War. They had to come.

That's no excuse They could still have made a more diverse lineup.

Quote:
PS: Don't bring up the Sea Elves just because I said the Dwarves had to be there.

I have no idea where I mentioned Sea elves I don't even know the concept of sea elves!

Heh, I don't think we're ever going to agree on this

when someone says "ELF!" I think of Barty Crouch yelling at poor winky...but I'm insane, so whatever.

Also, the Sea Elves were water dwelling elves who Allied with the Dark Elves during the war between the Elves and the other Elves.

You should take one thing into account: The choice to make the Dwarven line-up very mono-racial was neither based on lack of imagination from the developers or because of lack of mythological creatures to put there. They made the line-up this way based on a choice that this matched the personality they wanted for the Dwarves: They are conservative and live in a closed society and are not welcoming to strangers, that being humanoids or beasts. Personally, I think this makes pretty good sense in terms of the "standard" Dwarven personality profile, and based on that I think the line-up makes sense as it is.

And with that statement from Alc, i think we have ended the arguement. No, moonlith, I don't think we'll ever agree. But, that makes life interesting. If you want the discussion to continue, just say so.

The big drawback to race-based is that it is difficult to tell some of the units apart in the beginning.  I prefer a varied lineup with something in common, i.e. underground dwellers, swamp creatures, people who eat cheese, etc.

I very rarely had that problem, once in a while with Furies/Matriarchs because I wasn't looking closely enough (and it was like 3 a.m. in the morning) and occasionally I can't tell if something is upgraded, but that's not that much of an issue.

Indeed, along with Flower Sniffer. In fact, a lot of insults come just from that dialogue. Oh, what was that insult when he said "for (blank) they put up a good fight"?

Again, I just don't see what's so fun about looking at the same dwarf over and over again - I'm not talking about gameplay here. They could make runes as awesome and powerfull and fun as they could, but that still doesn't make the faction lineup anything special.
Ok, that better be the last time...

OK, good it was the last time(or was it). anyway, i agree that Fortress having 5 dwarves in the line-up(or 4... i don't know much about thanes) is a little too much. that is why... I STARTED ON A NEW MOD!!! i am going to replace the bear riders with just pure bears! waht do you think? i think it is a great idea! just 'cause i want people to like the midget faction!
