"I've always been a bit curious about my heritage I mean, demons." I said, "I will try and fight the demons. It should prove... interesting." I decided to reserve my questions for later.

"I just have one question, your highness: Will I get paid, afterwards?", I said, before I realised whom I was talking to. Damn me and my mercenary greed. To be honest, this experience would almost be enough of a reward, but risking my life always comes with a price.

Mitsu grumbles a bit.  "Guess I have to go against the Flayers.  Most of my tricks won't affect them, but if nobody else is.." she shrugs.  She knew she was going to have to have spells that would protect her from mental assults.

She heads to Onyx.  "I'll need you to suggest some spells to protect my mind, and on our way there we need to do some rune setting.  Can't go unprepaired up against the Flayers."

<<"Ok, we have the storm giants, flayers, and demons?  Who wants a piece of who?">>

HAAAHA!! I'll take all of them!

Azagal thought while dramaticaly pointing into a random angle of the tent. Azagals selfconfidence was boosted due to his new hand. He has been playing arround with it for a while and found it to be most satisfiying.

HA!I'll show those Storm giants who's the boss! I'll... giants?

The finger, which wasn't satisfied with pointing dramatically but had continued to poke holes in the air with unatural extravagance, slowly stoped poking it's target death so egerly.
Azagal found himself pictureing himself fighting a... giant. He would throw himself at his foe with all his might, valiantly for the good of his companions, burning with bloodlust and the iron resolve to tear his foe to shreds (his hand again poking enthusiasticly in the air)... only to find that he had done was to shave the leg of the giant (hand suddenly stops poking and swings back to his side.).

Hmmmmm...Storm giants may be not be the wisest of choices... Mind Flayers it is then!

The thought of fighting giant one-eyed brains with tentacles growing out of them made Azagal burst with self confidence again. Before he knew it he was pointing dramatically again. Only this time towards another corner of the tent.

Tzz... brains... they don't even have weapons xD! This will be a piece of cake! A miracle how these things actually have become a major "power". Tzzz. How do they fight?

He was striding triumphantly through the tent smiling from joy over his genius decision to fight an easy foe. Just before he was going to proclaim his decision his thought continued.

.....How do they fight?

His former smile is replaced by a rather puzzled look.

Mindcontrol? Yeah... I think the others were just talking about something like that and I guess I've read it somewhere.

Azagals image of him gleefully maiming his way through zounds of helpless brains was quickly replaced by the image of him, surrounded by his loyal honour guard squad ordering them to charge at the enemy without mercy, being assulted by his own troops... Or worse he might even cut himself. No he wouldn't want to go up against the soldiers he had trained and he most certainly wouldn't cut himself.

I guess only the Demons are left.

Admittingly Azagal has hold a grudge against these foul creatures ever since he fought with Onyx and after finding out that he had been in their service in the Order of Frosthold without even noticing. But he was not so blind that he wouldn't remember how he had failed in his last (and admittingly first) battle against a Demon. He took a grim look at his new arm, but he only saw the bleeding stump it once was. His fist clenched the metal making a griting sound. Not much time had passed since, surely he was stronger now than he was back then but not remarkibly.

Hmmm... I guess Demons it is.

Eventhough he didn't think that it would be to wise going to battle against a foe against whom he held such a hatred he wasn't sure what do to. If he would give himself over to ager he would lose his focus denying him to work with the deadly precision he had trained himself to work with, automatically making him less like to suceed, to live.

"Well... I don't think I would stand much of a chance against Mindflayers and even if I would for someone as simple as me I guess they are a bit to complex a foe. I need a foe with whom I battle in melee. I would like to go up against the Demons... or the Storm giants. Please deploy me where ever you see my limited powers of most use"

After considering his failure against the Demons and remembering that Demons are also more than capable wizards he wasn't too convinced he would be up for the challange and the Storm Giants didn't seem too bad after all. Big stupid brutes wouldn't be a match for his superior reflexes and speed.......He hoped...

The two week march certainly did not help the morale of the doom brigade.  The necessity of the task coupled with the extremely high mortality rate brought down the mood of the entire army.  But that did not discourage Sapphire.  For two weeks, she sang triumphant marches and dirges to the ruin of her enemies.  While it did little to improve spirits, it certainly kept things from getting worse.  Thankfully the weather was more than cooperative and made travel quick; having a full circle of druids in the ranks certainly was a boon.  The land itself proved to be difficult to navigate despite the weather.  After five days of marching, the landscape began to look ravaged, as if something was sucking the life out of everything.  For two weeks, there weren’t any signs of life aside from dozens of animal corpses.  The surprising lack of wildlife and vegetation resulted in strict food rationing being imposed on the soldiers, further reducing their morale.  For as bad as the soldiers may have felt about their lot, they were absolutely unprepared for what lay at the end of the journey.

Jade lets out a low whistle as she looks over a ridge with Moon, Vlad, Onyx, and Fate.  “I have never seen so many soldiers fighting before.  It’s incredible.”  The colonel’s words failed to do the scene justice.  Thousands upon thousands of monsters, demons, and humans were fighting in an all out brawl, ripping, slashing, and rending each other limb from limb.  The storm giants stand out like a sore thumb,  clubbing and hurling anyone creature foolish enough to get in their path.  Every step of the ponderous creatures brought the world crashing down on those underfoot.  The mind flayers resorted to more subtle forms of combat, stealing the minds of their foes and pitting them against each other like toys.  Thousands of thralls eerily shifted around the battlefield serving as one, long human chain thrashing through the masses.  The demons, on the other hand, had no need to resort to enslavement or stomping.  Forbidden magics and hellfire rained down on their foes, scorching and damning those in a waves of destruction.  From the looks of things, the five were quite surprised to see the nimble thieves holding their own.  Surely some darker power was looking out for their well-being.

“Not the word I’d use for it” Onyx spits out.  “By my estimate, there are 40,000 fighters down their ripping into each other and just about everyone will want a piece of us.  There are only 5,000 or so of us, so we will need to be judicious in our troop deployments.”

“Agreed.  Vlad.  The troops are yours to command.  The rest of us have-“

“Isn’t it strange?” interrupts Jade.  “It doesn’t look like anyone is leading the armies from the front.”

“She’s right” Onyx affirms.  “The hourglass isn’t responding to anything nor are the shards.  Wherever the evils are, it’s not here.”

“They are biding their time.  That is all.”  Moon adds cryptically as she squints, letting her divine vision find the missing pieces.  “They are here.  They are waiting for us.  Stratus is waiting at the northern end of the field, whatever is leading the flayers is to the west, and...”

“What?” asks Onyx impatiently.

“The demon prince is ascending the spire, and he’s not alone.  The Highlord is with him.”

Jade, Sapphire, Vlad, and Fate all just stare at Moon as she turns to descend into battle.  “Fate, myself, and Onyx will head for the spire.  They are the closest to the shard and therefore the most dangerous.  The rest of you have your targets.  Stop them.”

“Wait, where’s Jack?” asks Sapphire.

“The coward isn’t here” Moon replies coldly.

((The battle is ahead.  Get to it.))

"Great! I should have known that I should ask who in the name of Cyric the highlord is, before the battle!" I shouted. Ow, well, it could be worse, I thought. I summoned an undead minion, nodded to my fellow philantropists and went into the fray. Well, actually, my minion went. I protected myself with flee the scene and cast utterdark blast whenever I felt like it. The demons' powers were slightly drained by my spell and I found it ******* oresome.

Well, after a while, I saw that my minion wasn't what he used to be... And the damaging effect was rather meh. Someone better fight in melee with them...

Mitsu knows that in order to fight these creatures she will have again be the source of magic.  She knows just the spell also.  Since Onyx forgot to help her out...she casts Mind Blank on herself first.  Which will make her immune to the mind control of the flayers.  Then, until she can not any more, or until her group is protected, she will cast it on each of them.

For a couple seconds, I absent-mindedly roll the little amulet's blue stone between my thumb and middle finger while staring blankly at the battle. Then I snap back to reality.

"Alright, Jade and Mitsu, c'mere. This is how it's going to work. Jade, take the main body of your forces over there to the left." I say, pointing and using the melee as part of the diagram. "I want a containment formation, like a partial wheel form. Make sure your flanks are covered. DO NOT allow yourself to get drawn into the middle of this spat. Shift, hold position, or fall back to regroup if you must. I'm going to take the cavalry and a few archers over to the other side and we're going to try to shape the chaos how we want it."

I take a sharp breath before continuing.

"Mitsu this is where you come in. When the fracas looks like it's as compacted as it's going to get, unleash the Juggernaught right down the center line. Make sure it punches through to the other side or the men inside will likely get swallowed up. Have those men then move to support either Jade or myself.
Second, have the ordinance launching machines set up near or on the ridge. Besides providing fire support, they'll be able to cover our collective backsides in case we need to beat a hasty retreat.
Everyone understand? Get to it."

As I have Talia (my Unicorn) move off to inform the rest of the cavalry, I abruptly stop after a few steps.

"Oh sh*bleep*, I almost forgot..."

I pull out a small flask, take a small drink from it and as soon as it touches my tongue I gag and spit it out.

"Almost put a hex on the whole damned operation. Any takers?"

I have remained silent for the past few days apart from the time I needed to issue an order or were in Mitsu's company. Thoughts of uncertainly swirled around my head for a while but eventually I came to my senses. It doesn't matter, it's a battle that will have to be fought either way. And I do not plan to give up as long as I can draw breath. The world around me is crumbling - apparently Sun turned her back on us, the Nightlord is roaming free, we are up against superior forces - but I cling to the faint hope that we can prevail and I am ready to meet my fate.

"You know Mitsu, there are two things I absolutely hate. One is undead, the other is lack of free will - these abberations of nature called mind flayers.. I plan to engage them and hope to have you by my side. But might alone may not be enough, do you have any kind of wardings? I don't see us outsmarting them so we will probably have to do it the old fashioned way."

I run my fingers along my sword's smooth blade. Soon it will taste the flesh of our enemies once again.

After having taken down a demon or two, I decided to take a change of tactics. Since I spent most of my time casting invisibility and flee the scene, I couldn't dish out damage, except for my minion who seems to take it for granted that I respawn him every time and storms in to the fray with a sick battle lust, bordering to the suicidal. Okay, that isn't fair. Maybe I just want to relief some stress through him...

Very well, since my minion distracts me too much, I'll summon something uninteresting to do my fighting. After my good, old, trusted skeletal minion was decpitated for the sixth time by some uncaring balor, who seems to have nothing better to do for the time being, I decided to let the bones rest. I immediately summoned the best creature I could, which was still pretty mediocre, but at least he won't fall down so much it stops being. I sneakily went back to the center of the battlefield.

Of course, the human forces seem to take a turn to the left side of the battlefield, courtesy of general Vlad, I suppose. But still, there were some human forces were I could hide behind and there's nothing better I could ask for in times like this. I unleashed my dark minion and decided to see how good area-effect spells would do here. I immediately started of with something cool. I cast my invocation and ice actually shot out from the ground and grabbed the enemy forces...

Weird, I never thought that frozen water could form allegiances... Ow well, I suppose it's a good thing that I don't harm the kind, human soldiers. I hoped to see one of my fellow philanthropists in the fray. Then, I would've made some smug remark...

Like: "nice day for a walk isn't it?"

What the hell am I thinking about mid-battle!?! I should be concentrating on blasting my enemy to smithereens, not about making smug remarks! Time for some eldritch cones!

After Mitsu protected the group with Mind Blank, Mitsu decided that enough was enough.  Trading magic with them and their thralls would probably prove pointless, and her spell would not last forever.  Besides she had her allies with her, and she trusted them to watch her back.

At first her martial arts threw the enemy into confusion.  They had never fought anybody with her style of fighting.  Her agility and speed was too much for their thralls.   During the few lulls in the fighting she buffed herself with extra strength, dexterity, and haste.  When one of the creatures did manage to get close to her, it would fall with an arrow sticking from various places, or cleaved in two.

She would look over to see a wry smile from Winter, or a huge wink from Elvin.  They were a killing machine.

Unable to chance area effect spells without hurting their own, the flayers were no fools.  They realized that agility was her ally, and there was a way to help against that.  One of them summoned a storm, coating the ground with mud, which hampered her accrobatics greatly.  Now the battle was joined more fiercely.  They gathered around the group trying to just overwhelm them with numbers.

Mitsu had anticipated this.  With a signal she threw up a wall of force, and the three of them huddled behind it as the Juggernaught came crashing into the gathered thralls.  As soon as the chaos cleared, the wall was down and the battle rejoined.  Many a flayer, and many a thrall, fell at the groups hands.  Soon their numbers had dwindled.

Mitsu could sense victory, and it made her sloppy.  She let the battle carry over to the Storm Giant area.  As she was facing off against a flayer, something huge come crashing down on her.  In a way she got lucky, it was the flat side of a huge two handed sword weilded by a Storm Giant.  The enormous force behind it was another matter.  She went flying through the air.

With a thud she landed over one hundred feet away.  She was not moving, and there were several thralls headed her way.

One versus many, I am no match for these storm giants. I do what I can, staying back with the siege weapons, firing off what spells I can, getting close only if I feel I can get a spell off on a moderately, but not overly-sized group. A prismatic spray here, an acid arrow there. I do as I can to help thin out the enemies.

“I don’t have time for you!” Moon shouts as she stabs two scimitars into a lesser demon.  The blades pulse as glacial energy surges from the goddess, wrapping the monster in a icy blanket.  Two quick wrenches shatter the statute, launching hundreds of shards into the air.  With a blast of Moon’s breath, the shards rip through the air and shred those foolish enough to stand against her.  “This is taking too long!”

“I’m working as fast as I can!”  A body explodes as sickly-colored energies pour into it.  The master is glowing aqua; every rune flaring underneath his attire.  An imp dives for his face, only to be repulsed by an invisible force.  A flick of the wrist sends a dagger into the creature’s head.  “You didn’t expect this to be a quick endeavor did you?”  Between the goddess, rune master, and the ranger, dozens and dozens of foes lay dead behind them.  A flurry of arrows puncture three demons to Onyx courtesy of Fate while Shady ( I honestly can’t remember the dog’s name) drags careless quasits down from the sky.  Enemy after enemy, wave after wave, the trio pushes on, slowly but surely gaining on the demon prince and the Highlord.

The regal demon glances behind him and smirks at the unfolding bloodshed the three heroes unleash.  He could see their lead diminishing with every strike.  “Perhaps now would be a good time to play your trump?”

“Which one?” asks the Highlord as he crushes a rock under his boot.  “I have so many to use against these fools.”

“As much as I enjoy good drama I think it would be better to just kill them now,” replies the prince as he casually summons a meteor to crush the head of an unwary frost giant.  The massive body flattens a squad of Northern Alliance troops.  “Plus it-“ He stops and squints as notices something from the corner of his eye.  A few of his soldiers are cut down by an eldritch blast coming from a young warlock.  Partnered with the warlock is another young man with a mechanical arm.  Huge sweeping motions from metallic claws tear apart imps and lesser demons.  A blade finishes off those lucky enough to avoid the rending.   The prince snaps his fingers and two shadowy forms arise from the ground.  With a silent nod, the prince sends them off to terminate the intrepid duo.  Within seconds, the demons are squaring off with the Dagoth and Azagal.

A crude snort escapes the thorny helmet.  “No.  I will watch them fail before I kill them.  I want to watch them lose everything.”  The Highlord stops, turns, and gazes through an empty slot at Moon’s advance.   “But don’t worry.  I’ll make sure they have some fun before I rip their hearts out.”  Two red globes flash underneath the helmet.  Around the battlefield, every shadow thief stops and blinks; their corneas glowing a vibrant red.  Within moments, the entire army starts to lash out with renewed vigor at everyone, friend and foe alike.

==============================================================================

“RUN!” Several soldiers dive to avoid the collapsing frost giant.  Dust spews everywhere as the body crashes into the ground, burying eight people under tons of blue skin.  A few feet to the left and Blake would have been a flattened.  A few more giants engaged are ripped apart by the war machines, showering demon, thief, flayer, and alliance solider alike.

For only fighting for fifteen minutes, there is a staggering amount of carnage.  The shadow thieves dance around their opponents, darting in and out like gnats, using every sort of trick imaginable to drop their foes.  The slower ones find themselves crushed under the heavy war hammers of the giants.  As one flayer feasts on the grey matter of a poor farm recruit from Frosthold, a gigantic war axe cleaves the freak in twain.  Another frost giant scoops up a handful of slower thieves and throws them straight into the Juggernaut, jamming it, and blowing the construct to pieces as it attempts to fire.  Blake finds himself tossed through the air like a children’s doll, barely escaping incineration at the hands of the fiery maelstrom.  In less than a minute, over a thousand combatant’s lay dead around a massive crater.

A young apprentice helps the wizard to his feet.  “ … …… …… …… …..” the young mage asks.  “…… ……… …… ….”  The man’s mouth is moving but there is nothing coming out.  All that Blake can hear is a persistent ringing sound.  “… ….!!!!”  The man’s empty mouth widens as pushes Blake to the ground.  A second later, the apprentice explodes in a mist of red vapor.  Smoke wisps off a wand held by a shadow thief and with a grin, the possessed woman draws the wand on Blake.

Jade takes advantage of the explosion and impales a storm giant through the leg.  It howls as it tries to stomp on the warrior but years of fighting have made Jade too quick for the brute.  A few more well placed stabs hack away the humanoids tendons and it slumps to the ground thrashing.  It’s life ends as Jade jumps on its neck and plunges her spear down, creating a gushing, blue geyser.   “KEEP GOING YOU DOGS!”  A lone shadow thief attempts to stab her in the back, only to be met with a crack to the skull.  “TRAITORS!  MEN OF THE ALLIANCE, KILL EVERYONE!”

==============================================================================

“Hold on!” an unknown cleric commands as chants a healing spell.  Another tries to keep Mitsu’s head still during the chaos, doing everthing possible to keep from panicking at the sight of the mindless slaves.  The enslaved men, women, and even children look on through teary eyes and red war paint, helpless to resist the commands of the malevolent flayers.  As the healing energies restore the broken mage, she notices for the first time the atrocities that have been visited upon the unwilling soldiers.  Every face has been stripped of skin, giving each of the unwilling combatants a gruesome visage as they charge suicidially into the fray.  Before the clerics are overrun, fire erupts from the ground, cooking the damned souls to a crisp.  A moment later and Ceres would have been too late.

For as fierce as the thralls fight, the members of the Alliance seem to be fighting with a rage uncommon to mere mortals.  Inflamed by Sapphires battle hymns, each soldier rips into man’s enemies.  Hundreds of thralls are cut down to the oblivious soldiers yet hundreds more come.  Even worse the flayers supporting them cast spell after spell, bolstering the mindless armies strength exponentially.  Thankfully spell casters are easily distracted making them especially easy target’s for Elvin’s blades.

+Keep killing.  I have plenty more to send.+

“Who said that?” demands Sapphire.

+You’ll see soon enough.  Now, I have some children here who are just dying to play with you.  They have special “needs,” so be gentle+

Hundreds of bloody eye sockets gaze at the bard, all moaning for mothers and fathers.  A small legion of child thralls holding dinner knives, spoons, and other ridiculous instruments of death, march slowly towards the bard and nearby soldiers. A few of the weaker Northern Alliance soldiers gasp in disgust and are hacked apart by the sniveling force, unwilling to strike out at little children.  One of the more sensitive druids entangles those he can before having his cranium punctured by a wandering flayer.  Things are starting to look bad.  Really bad.

"What's going on with the thieves..."

The question is promptly interrupted as I sense something. Out of sheer instinct, I duck to the side, barely dodging a backstab courtesy of a Shadow Thief.

I order my summoned wolves ((you did remember those two, right? )) to tear apart the traitor thief. Afterwards, I ask Moon:

"Now what?"

I cast Entangle behind ourselves, trapping a small army of enemies, for the time being...as I ready my bow and await the response...

He ran deeper into the enemy lines far ahead of his squad and he was laughing loud and wild while he was slashing and stabbing his way through the lesser minions.

“AAAHAHAHA!! YES!! YEEES! COME AT ME FOOLS!!”

Demons exploded next to him which had tried to use the opening Azagal had while he was tearing an imp apart with both his hands. Shocked he looked around to find his saviour only to find the Warlock smiling at him while blowing the smoke of his hand.
A wide grin was on Azagals face as he replied.

“Thanks!! That wa…”

Azagal didn’t get to finish the sentence as he was interrupted by a big black shadow slashing out after him.

Was about time that I’d find something a bit more difficult than a lesser demon and with mad laughter he threw himself against the foe.

As soon as we get into position, I take the opportunity to deliver some last minute instruction.

"As soon as we make contact, remember we'll be executing the millstone maneuver. Squad leaders, make sure your men keep moving. To your squads."

I draw my sword and address the cavalry as a whole.

"Men, our enemies have hauled their sorry carcasses out here for one reason. There's something valuable in this place, this hole, that's got them so hot and bothered, they're falling over each other trying to get their filthy paws on it. Whatever it is, we are not going to let them have it! On this day, the only thing we'll let them have, is our blades in their bellies and a pool of their own blood to drown in! Am I right men? *to my signaler* Sound the charge."

With a loud and commanding voice, amplified by magic, she sends a message to those arround her that are her allies.  "FALL BACK, you have...20 seconds to put as much ground between you and the flayers as you can...starting NOW."

She starts a spell, counting to 20, finishing it right as she reaches twenty.  She has had ENOUGH of this.  "THIS ENDS NOW!" Ignoring the thralls, and whoever is unlucky enough not to have gotten out of the way, she unleashes all her magical energy at once, every last bit of reserve.  She will be without magic for sometime because of it, but she will still be able to fight with her weapons.

A prismatic sphere, normally stationary, rolls from her finger tips.  It gains size, strenght, and momentum as it rolls.  The flayers try to stop it, but it is unyeilding.  Too many spells are needed just to counter the one.  When it stops, a smoking crater is where the bulk of the flayers, thralls, and some of the unlucky but slow allies were.

Mitsu's eyes flash for a second, almost sparking of insanity.  Then it is gone, and she sees what she has done.  Stumbling, she pulls out her swords.  She rushes like a woman possessed into the remaining flayers.  Not caring if she lives or dies.

After a slightly misdirected mental blast(the blessing must have also decreased the wave's impact on me) I engaged the closest mind flayer ready to strike when two thralls grabbed by arm from behind. The little time it took me to headbutt, jab and jerk my hand free the flayer was already upon me, his slithering tentacles reaching for my exposed face. And then it happened, a blinding flash and next thing I knew I was pulling myself up from the dirt disoriented and not quite sure how I got there.
As I stood and scanned my immediate surroundings I saw Mitsu rush for the enemy lines - crazy girl was she trying to get herself killed? I hacked at the fallen abomination's head and run to defend and fight alongside her, who knows how much of a drain that last spell was for her. Time to get close and personal, no tricks, no aces up my sleeve. My blade would be quenched in the blood of our enemies before it would be sheathed again.
