They do seem to act fishy around monoliths, but they cannot see the whole map.

My friend had a necropolis and my hero was outside of it. The AI ran up, 5 or 6 spaces from my hero, then immediately ran off. I ran around fighting the mob, and the AI kept rescouting the area, and kept turning around and running. So, even if they start off seeing the whole map, necropolises erase their memory of it.

They behave normally with two way monoliths as well. They appear, see your hero, and go back through the monolith. They might have the exit of one way's revealed for them, or they might always know your relative power, but they don't have the entire map explored.

On a big map, it can take the AI forever to find your town. I captured several random towns in our last random map, and they AI never even went close to them. If the AI could see the entire map, they would have snatched up all of my unguarded towns. (I didn't have town portal.)

what information is useful when fighting AI?
I consider very useful that AI calculate chances to win separately for garrison and visiting heroes!
If you flagged AI town and don't wanna spend a lot time sending scouts and trying to find 1-2 AI heroes around this town - then you should attact AI to attack this town. AI will attack, if chances to win the battle are pretty good.
If you have all army either in garrison or on visiting hero - AI will stay away from town, but if you separate it by 2 parts, then AI will think he will defeat you and will attack.
P.S. perhaps this info was mentioned in some HC threads? I don't remember

AI is myopic. It knows everything but can see only what is next to him. He is aware that 4000 azures will join him on the other side of the map, but will not go until he completes the short terms task he was programmed for.

@Sag: yes, dividing the army between garrison and hero is the best way to lure a shy AI. In WoG and certainly TE the !#UN:J4/32000; will greatly improve AI heroes only (much better than SoD), I tested it for a long time.

AI knows the entire map from the very start. It just happens to not do anything about that fact.

I had one very special situation.
Forgot on which map did it happen, but one day, when I played with my friend from one computer, the AI cheated hardly - it could walk as far as it wanted. So that was bad. Killed my prepared populations in my castle, killed my enemies, and died in the fight with my friend, who has been fortunately present in his castle that time.
That wos some foke weird stuff! :-)

I played a bunch of random maps where the AI jumped over the monsters and mountains.

I don't think so. There is no way the AI could get the Angel Wings on week 3. It can't make a large enough army to kill it's guards.

Also, it wasn't in a Pandora Box.

Water Walking likely, because AI can fly with it. Although, perhaps it was patched.

You can get relic artefacts out of a warrior's tomb...which is guarded by level 1-2 units...just as an example...

I did notice that the AI always knows which artifacts you have equipped.

When I recently played the campaigns and was in the mission of recapturing Steadwick, the enemy heroes always attacked my rather great army with similar sized ones and just before the final blow they fled.
It was quite frustrating since I didn't got his artifacts and lost quite a part of my army.

This behaviour stopped the moment I found the Shackles of War. Because the AI knew it would run a suicide attack on me they rather ran away than loosing the hero and the artifacts.

And I'm not so sure that the AI does know the whole map. I noticed it quite often that the enemy heroes go to places where I have already found artifacts. They may know the position of artifacts, resources and everything else but possibly not whether someone else was there before.

Did anyone tried to create a mod to improve the AI? I know we have a lot of mods to add stuff on the game, but I rather have a mod which keeps the vanilla version of the game, but which much stronger AI.
