Well H4 weren't succesful but it had some good ideas (as well whit some bad ones). I have played the game more than i have played most games but still not as much as other Heroes games. For me the biggest issue was the looks of it, sounds and general feeling of the game. It's not horrible but combared to others it's rather average game.

The biggest problem with H4 for me was the hero deveplopment.
It's great in campaigns but when playing one map games, even if they are extra large, the hero development is frustratingly slow. With good luck you'll be having one grandmaster magics at the end of the map.

The hero development is one of the things that makes Heroes 4 the ultimate Heroes game in my opinion. You have so many ways to create an unique hero. Heroes 5 is the worst game on this. No hero classes at all?

You are both right, the problem with hero development in heroes 4 is that a lot of maps are too small for it and large maps are very difficult to balance for it. There are actually quite a lot of xl maps available for h4 (look on celestialheavens) but a lot of them simply don't work right in end game, because neutrals are too weak and the Ai is also too weak. So when you have finally created your team of super heroes there is not enough time and battles to enjoy them.

@Andy Dandy:I enjoyed zanfas challenge also very much, but not before heavily modifying it in the mapeditor. If you have your maps ready i would surely like to see them. I don't believe you played h5 more then a few times because H5 has the most complex skill systems so far and is definately enjoyable to play. The problem is the creators of h5 never implemented good ingame info about the skill system so an ingame skillwheel mod is a must have.

I'll let you know when they are totally ready, max one or two more weeks. I guess I will use celestialheavens and place the maps there. Their names will be: "Rise of an Empire" and "Lords of the 6 Realms" In my opinion, and my playtesters, "Rise of an Empire" is the greatest Heroes 4 map to date, so stay put..... Lords of the 6 Realms is my first map, not so esthetical as Rise of an Empire, but the gameplay and the map idea is really good.

One more thing. I assure you the heroes development in Heroes 4 is perfect for these maps.

In H4 what really fascinated me and that's better than H5 is the elve's theme song, it's so..., well, can't describe
I study biology and go camping to "pick up some flowers and bettles (had to say that)" sometimes, and I feel like mistified and enchanted by that song, which reminds me of the beauties of nature.

The game  was very buggy(for example, you could transport the troops from one hero/town to another hero/town by a bug!)
The heroes were too easy to build up...
It`s also unbalanced. The vampires often can destroy almost every army!!!
The AI seems more retarted, than it was in HOMM III. It was extremely easy to beat the crap out of it!
So...the game is terrible.

Yeah, I agree the AI is terrible in Heroes 4, but I do not agree it is to unbalanced. I think the bad AI makes it seem more unbalanced then it is. The AI can't use the scouting skills for instance, like a human can.

I'd say Heroes 4 with a great AI would be one hell of an awesome game!

Yeah, I agree the AI is terrible in Heroes 4, but I do not agree it is too unbalanced. The hypnotize spell is perhaps a bit to good, should be impossible to use with obsticles in the way, at least.....

I think the bad AI makes the game seem more unbalanced then it is. The AI can't use the scouting skills (Chaos) for instance, like a human can, or make use of the creature portal of Nature, or seek the correct magic skills for it's Might heroes etc, etc.....

I'd say Heroes 4 with a great AI would be one hell of an awesome game!

I was looking at some features of Homm4 and was quite impressed at the huge variety of spells and hero classes in the game compared to tote.
I've only played homm1-2 and abit of 3 and lately started on tote. So I'm wondering if its worth playing homm4 now since its a really old game.

I think Heroes 4 is the best Heroes game ever. The Hero class system, and the fighting heroes on the battlefield, are the main reasons I love it so much. I can't really enjoy any other Heroes game because I miss these features too much. The sad thing is the bad AI, if the AI was good enough to use all the features of the game, the game would be perfect. Luckily the game has a very good editor, and it's easy to go in and give the AIs great benefits on the different maps.

NB! Heroes 4 are best on very large maps because of the grand skills system. I always play at least XL-maps, so that's perhaps an important factor when I recon Heroes 4 to be the best! The sad thing is that there is only one official XL map.

I've made a few very great XL-maps. I'm sorry for not putting them out for you guys yet, but very soon now they will be.

I Love Heroes IV, even with its faulty AI. For me the Map/Campaign Editor makes this game the most classic of all the Heroes games. Just my

It's average,

The biggest problem is that the AI is nonexistence, which takes all the fun out of the game.

The second mistake NWC made was to bring heroes into the battle.

The best feature is the combat system. Spell design is very smart.

From my understanding there is an active multiplayer heroes iv group in the world today...so those complaining of AI should seek people to play with?

And man, release your maps to the world...Celestial Heavens would host it probably...

True, H4 would make a good MP game, I did enjoy playing it online, like said, its combat system is very smart. regardless, good AI is VERY important for the Heroes series, first of all I play SP more than MP and secondly I play Heroes to remind me the good old gaming days, without AI it's just not right....

Also if I want online wargaming, I play the game called Dominions (has anyone heard of it? , it's THE multiplayer strategy game).

The wait may soon be over. I placed my best map on Celestialheavens.com yesterday night. I guess it will take a while before they lay it out, but the process is in progress (hopefully it will take max. a week). Look for an XL Heroes IV map called "Rise of an Empire"

I've always been very anti-H4. For the main reasons listed above.. but whats so bad about not sticking with tradition? Isn't "variety the spice of life"?  Atleast some of the heroes carried over, which is more than what can be said for HV (where's sandro & gem!?!)

People just loathed h4 because it was too different from h3 (which is the most succesfull and the best of all Heroes games)
They should've firstly made a game like h5 and then released h4. This rush to originality and new ideas killed them in the end
