No, bankruptcy and poor decisions on other franchises killed them.  Heroes IV sold quite well.

I loved HoMM IV. I just thnk that other guys consider it a waste, but I find it wonderfully different. When I got HoMM IV 3 years ago, it was love at first sight. I enjoyed it without knowing that many hate it. However, after a year of HoMM IV only, I begun to mss HoMM III, so I re-playing it. Then, I started entering forums, and I was surprised to find how dreaded it is. I said tomyself:"They;re right. IV is awful."

And you know what happened? My computer crashed, and for a year I couldn't play III anymore. I had to return to IV, and I was surprised to see how much I liked it. I came to a conclusion: it doesn;t matter how much they despise it, I love it very much.

For guys who didn't played HoMM Iv becasue of others opinion: you don't know what you are missing. The great storyline, music, athmosphere. The interesting innovations. You have 4 classic HoMMs, but you also have a fourth part in wich all your questions like "How would have been if.......?" are answered.  I agree, I preffer III and V(sadly, I never ever managed to get I and II), but it's gerat, from time to time, to enjoy a hero-less creature army and listen the wonderful music and to be read to exceptional storyline.

I doesn't matter what others said, HoMM Iv is wonderfully different and, in it's way, it's the best HoMM from the series. By far, it's the most oiginal. I will always like it and I's surprised by it's everlasting beauty. Play it!!!!! You should'nt let others opinion to be yours. Give it a chance. You might love it.

P.S.: I rated it great in the poll.

I'll say(after playing it a bit more) that H4 isn't bad, although I won't like to see it in H6...

Hopefully Heroes VI will not end up as another bad Heroes III copy..... (I rather play Heroes III then V) They should be inspired by some of the great ideas in Heroes IV!

Let them continue in H5 spirit and I will be more than happy.
H5 was great addition to series, as was h4 in its way.

Then again, both h3 and h4 are ancient past in my eyes, and I started playing when Kings Bounty came out.

Is h4 succesful?

+
-heroes can walk alone and fight. now you can play having good hero and not having big army.
-caravans
-creatures can move without hero
-nice soundtrack
-good story
-many possible things in mapmaker and scripting
-good campaigns and maps
-many new objects
-
-stupid battles
-annoying graphics (worst than homm 3 imo, behemoth looks like monkey, and venom spawns look like snails.)
-6 fractions
-small number of creatures and stupid choosing creature system
-boring...

How dare they ask such question ? >)

Succesful becose of:

-Great multiplayer balance (simultaneous retaliations the best addition )

-Very good map graphics (some of the graphics in battle can be huge pain not for the eye only but even for gameplay)

-Soundtracks are excelent (other game sounds too)

-Nice original campaigns (The story does continue from the Gelu-Kilgor fight but there are new main characters conquering the new universe) BTW I think all heroes games campaigns are excelent.

-Hero clases (no hero uniqueness, but the number of clases made a fair uniqueness-like feature that any player can get. Rather then other games where every hero was unique and only one player could have a certain hero per game)

-Not to forget the wonderful campaign(map) editor with its great scripting posibilities enabling the creation of very good maps, campaigns

Unsuccesful becose of:

-SinglePlayer is not its best side mostly if not all becose of the AI (good autosave makes rare shiny moments the AI has go unnoticed too)

-It was much diferent from the previous games so I supose it was very hard for the fans to accept, altough I am a hardcore fan for any heroes games (mostly H4 as you probably noticed )

Undefined:

-Number of factions, creatures (On the first look it does look bad, inferno and necropolis got merged, many creatures like dread knights, pit lords were lost, H4 compensated the number of creatures with Hero clases, becose heroes are now big part of armies too. For the factions it would be nice to see someone adding a faction without ruining the great balance present already)

-Creature choosing system (it is a lot more interesting then the build lvl1,lvl2,...,lvl7 stuff, it has to do more with strategy (insert sarcasam here ), need I say more? ohhh I forgot ... ITS not what H3 was!)

Wow, so many grammar errors. No, I was not stupid, I wasn't checking. And yes, I still love H4 (altough that post was rather jerkish, I am ashamed. I was a n00b, what can you ask from a n00b?).

Actually Zamfir that old post was pretty good.

One thing though, is h4 multiplayer really that fast?  I read in a joke article about the tactic of sending one peasant at a time to siege the enemy castle to try to make the (human) opponent quit in disgust.

Curiously, there is a map where the best you can get is roughly 50% chance to succeed.

You have to spend some considerable time to find the hated enemy who is your twin.

Then duel him pitchfork to pitchfork and hope that lady luck is on your side.

I'm of course speaking of the dreaded Bob the Peasant map. Should be a topic about it somewhere in the Lands.

Just passing by ...

In case you don't know the map.

Your army is exactly 1 peasant. The enemy is exactly 1 peasant. No luck or morale boosters on map. No heroes.

I liked that HOMM4 had a new spell system and many hero classes. And that was it. Graphics were done very poorly, town's inside layout was identical for every faction. Hero can die during a combat. They're HEROES for crying out loud! Heroes dont die, they just flee to the bushes AI vas very pathetic. Even the easiest CPU in HOMM3 fights better. Mixing the factions- the main reason why most people hate HOMM4. Devils and undead, WTF? In Reign of Chaos, undead being a part of the demon's army was kinda cool, but in HOMM4 it sucked. I've paid 8 euros for this game and kinda regreting it. Overall HOMM4 is a good game, but crappy decisions made this game a big piece of bullcrap
